Better Geocoding within Flickr (Neat Bookmarklet) V6.0

view profile

aemkei is a group moderator aemkei  Pro User  says:

Bookmarklet Preview

I just spend some time to create a slim bookmarklet that enables mapping, geocoding and (of course) geotagging directly in your Flickr photo page. It works with all common browsers (Firefox, IE, Safari, Opera) without the need for any extension.

To run it, simply drag it to your tool bar, visit one of your photo pages, hit it again and your done. No sluggishly page refreshs, just simple AJAX style behind the curtain ;)

Don't miss this bookmarklet: Grab it here!

UPDATE
- Fully supported Flickr location data
- Custom description for map-link
- Draggable marker
- Worldwide geocoder for any kind of places
- Switch to fullscreen version
- Smooth zoom when map was double clicked
- Link to loc.alize.us map added in description
- Batch tagging: Remember last saved location
- See where someone else's photo has been taken
- Long/Lat input possible (eg. "N 40°45', W 73°59'", "40.75, -73.98")
- Easy EXIF geo data extraction (if you've used GPS-devices)

If you like to browse all the Flickr photos check loc.alize.us!

Ps: I developed it using dynamic scripts. So all future improvements will be available without any worry. If you miss something, drop it in the comments and I'm gonna care about...

- Aemkei

I think there's a problem remaining with tags being removed after applying geotagging. The problem has indeed been corrected for regular tags, but it's still there for machine tags.
Otherwise it's great. Thanks again aemkei.

Me again.

The tagging seems to work fine now, but the link to loc.alize.us does not. I see that the page is redesigned (lots more fancy stuff) but no map appears.

I have always had trouble with showing yahoo maps with multiple photos displayed, but now I am having trouble here too.

I run IE6 (not enough memory for 7) so maybe I should switch to Firefox, but surely it ought to work?

OK, I think I resolved it. I got no error report in Internet Explorer, but I installed Firefox and it told me I needed an updated Flash Player. After installing this it now works.

Maybe a note for others?

Earthwatcher  Pro User  says:

Hi Aemkei,

Over the past few weeks I have carefully geotagged over 200 photos on my Flickr photostream, using your bookmarklet, which worked very well indeed. Howver, now that Flickr has changed over from Google Maps to loc.alize.us maps many of my geotags are either missing, or, worse, in the wrong place - by as much as 300 metres out. This definitely seems a backward step to me, at the moment.

I take great care with my geotagging and I am certain that my original markers were in the correct location. (Most of my geotagged photos are in the Sheffield, Yorkshire, UK region).

Is this a temporary glitch? Or have I got to go back through my photos and re-geotag them? Argghh!

Also, once you are in the loc.alize.us map screen, it is nearly impossible to get back to the original Flickr photo page. Clicking on the browser (Firefox) back button does not work except after dozens of repeated clicks.

Anyone else had similar problems to me?
Help please?

@Nemo's GU: Yes, Yahoo maps are next to useless for any degree of accuracy. Flickr links to Yahoo Maps in the 'organise' section, but aemkei's bookmarklet threw you into Google Maps, which Flickr then linked to subsequently. Now the bookmarklet takes you to loc.alize.us which is Horrible!

As I said earlier, this script is great. Having fun mapping my pics, and adding the nifty "See where this picture was taken" link.
loc.alize.us/#/user:IN-duce/geo:36.72127,132.86865,5,k/

Some of my pics have a Tokyo Datum added to them. If I use your script, they invariably get mapped about 400m S-E of where they should be. Could your script handle that? The datum info is in my Exif (taken with JP mobile phone.)

Getting back to Flickr after using loc.alize.us
This is still a real pain. Just clicking on the browser back button does not work except after dozens of clicks :-(

The best way I found is to go to my browser 'history' list. Looking there, I can usually spot my last Flickr access embedded in a whole load of automatically generated localize pages, and then click on that to get me back into Flickr. May not be exactly the Flickr page I want but it's mostly close enough.

I love your script and flickr's organizer with its maps-function has no chance for me until it is not equally easy to use as your script. I also use the multi-group-sender script from steeev and this made me have this idea - perhaps it is interesting for other people, too:

I often take photos at the same place, so perhaps you could add the option to save the location with a specific name...

- or -

...the option to copy the lat/lon-values together with the tag "geotagged" so that I can just add the tags without re-opening the script every time!

Thanks.

The only feature I would really like is to have a 'same as last place' button. I know, it could lead to sloppiness, but trying to place the x in the right spot 20 times in a row gets old.

Just a wish.

Still no answer from aemkei.
In the meantime, I solved the issue where his script wouldn't find my EXIF geotagged pictures in Hong Kong by using GeoReTagR.
And then I thought, wouldn't it be great if there was a similar script that would go through all my geotagged pics and automatically add this very handy loc.alize.us "See where this picture was taken" link instead of me having to go through all my geotagged pics to do that one by one.
thoughts?

Hey there! I had to handle my office's relocation these days, enjoyed the most interesting FOWA conference in London and being quite busy to hack some new features for our clients. So I've been unplugged in virtual social live. - And I am sorry!

But today I found some hours to fix the three mayor bugs:

- all your machine tags will stay where the came from
- Internet Explorer 6 and Opera 8 will handle the links
- loc.alize.us will now open in a new window
- fixed some other tag related issues

I definitely want some more spare time to put my hands on this scripts!

Hi aemkei, I love this Geotagging tool, but I don't like to see the "See where this picture was taken" link directly after my description on the 'thumbnails' page. Is there anyway to change it so it only appears on the particular photo's page itself? It can make the photo description on the thumbnails page appear quite confusing, and I've changed mine to just read "MAP". But it would be better if it was only on the particular photo's main page.

This image has no EXIF geotag, but was geotagged using Flickr by its author. I wanted to look at a more detailed map than Flickr's so I used the Localize Bookmarklet, but it says: "Sorry, but this photo has no geotags assigned to". How come? Shouldn't the script read Flickr's geotag data and let me see the map even if the image is not mine?

Error: "no user found"
When I type my username into loc.alize.us it says "No user found".
I gather a month or so ago Flickr tightened their privacy rules and I've had to open up some of my privacy settings to get another Flickr App to work, but that seems to have had no affect on loc.alize.us (and I have waited several days)

I have a link to my loc.alize.us pictures that always worked before, but now gives that error message, so it's not like I'm searching on a different name.

I can zoom in and find my pictures in loc.alize.us, but when I click on my username it again gives the error "no user found".

I love this bookmarklet. Thank you very much. Perhaps it feeds my obsessive streak, but, so be it.

One thing that I would really like would be to be able to have a single click save the location at the center of the screen (which defaults to the last saved location). I tend to take many pictures without moving (I photograph bike racing). This would save me a bunch of clicks when posting a bunch of pictures, relieve me of some concentration, and encourage me to work through more of my backlog.

Just a thought. Thanks so much.

Great bookmarklet - is someone still maintaining this? Just noticed one thing today... if I upload an image that has other machine tags (i.e. file:name=xxxxx), when I use the bookmarklet and it creates the map location, my machine tags are wiped out and the only two that remain are the geo:lat and geo:lon.

Cheers!

Nemo's great uncle  Pro User  says:

I would like a faster version that runs start to finish without any user intervention past the first click.

Reasons:

(1) I have a Sony GPS unit, so the coordinates are already in the EXIF data.
Note that I'll keep the current version as a fallback because
• I sometimes forget to turn the unit on.
• In the city, the unit takes forever to lock on.
• The coordinates are sometimes off.

(2) I'm outside the US, so Yahoo Maps are totally useless. (Very little detail and major errors.)
Google Maps and loc.alize.us/ are the only things that work here.

(3) The geotagged tag is coming in very handy for semi-automatically making "smart sets" with SmartSetR.
My smart set for my home (Setagaya Geotagged) already has over 1200 photos, automatically sorted by date taken, and grows daily.

First: I thought you had posted the b'marklet and huh huh ended up dragging your link to my toolbar. *grin*
Second: fabulous. Really.

For those who might have missed it, here's the post at sumaato labs ... really fabulous.

I only started toying with flickr/geoRSS a coupla days ago and was shocked at how few are tagged.

I included a half-dozen feeds in this google map and was very pleased by the group pool results, but shocked at how few there were. And the feeds for tags are pretty dismal ... there are thousands of shots tagged "mountains" and almost none geo-tagged!

So: believe me when I say I'm going to be promoting your work! (Actually, I'm going to throw your link up on my map right this minute.)

I love this bookmarket and application. It's fantastic for getting better, far far more accurate geotags than the built-in Yahoo Maps app allows.

However, now that I've gotten around to labeling my Israel photos, I've found that the map within the Flickr window has no details or labels for Israel whatsoever - no city names, let alone streets, street names, building names - nothing whatsoever, despite the fact that regular Google Maps does have these features, these details to some extent (admittedly a lesser extent than many other parts of the world).

Is there anything to be done? Is this something that's in development?

If anyone needs to geotag in the meantime, it's still possible. As aemkei said, there's basically an invisible layer over part of the map and some of the links. With a little trial and error you can find out where you are still able to click on the map, for me I think it was about the right-most quarter of the map.

What I did was increase the text size in my browser a few steps until I could click on Maximize Map, then you'll have more map area to navigate around in, and the search and save location links are accessible as well.

Hope that helps!

» I've been using this bookmarklet for nearly 4 years without any troubles, and today when I went to add it to chrome, none of the pages where it sits will load, also, when I use the existing bookmarklet in Safari, it won't open or work?

It looks like the sumaato.net site (i.e. servers?) are down. It's not just the bookmarklet that's timing out, I've tried going to the website directly (to look for a Help section, or info on the status of what's going on) and the site as a whole seems to be down.

Hopefully it's just temporary difficulties, and not an indication of the company folding or something.

I've been having the same problem for a few days now - it last worked for me on 18 December. The add to your map link on the flickr photo page wasn't working/loading for me either - but now is.

Here comes the good news:

We fixed the issue this morning. As you assumed, it was a problem with the server. Now everything should be up and running again. Maybe you have to wait for another few hours because we had to change the DNS settings.

Happy geotagging! And thanks for your continued support and appreciation.

I can now see a map in my photostream but can't move it or add a geotag to an image. Perhaps I need to wait a bit longer or could this be another issue?

It's not working for me and I've cleared my cache a dozen times. Can't move the map, zoom doesn't work, and can't place the pink arrow.

It's kind of working for me... but I have the same problem as trailerfullofpix. If I type in an address, it works fine. But otherwise, nothin'.

@all: Sorry for the delay!

We managed to restore the bookmarklet code. It was not that easy because I left my coding machine back home for Xmas.

So, everything should be up and working again.

Merry Christmas and happy geotagging!

Thanks aemkei! I love this bookmarklet.

No good deed goes unrewarded, so I'm going to ask for another feature.

I'd like to put geotags in pics in a group I administer. I have permission to add tags to these pics although they are not mine. Could loc.alize.this let me add the geotags to these pics, even though it can't change the description? Perhaps put the loc.alize this info as a comment instead? If that's not possible, can loc.alize this somehow show the lat and longitude for a site, so I can enter it manually?
