Tips + Tricks for GeoTagging
|
Use this thread to discuss tips and tricks for GeoTagging Flickr.
Heres a couple from me:
If you would like to search for images at a certain location, and you dont know the latitude and longitude. You can simply use the search on maps.google.com to find the location, then once you have located the place you want to see images for, you can simply click the "Check GeoTags!" link on the right hand side of the screen. (N.B this link will only show up if you have installed my GreaseMonkey user script for google maps) You will then be transferred to the Geoblogging site, which will show you the list of images taken nearest to the latitude and longitude you selected.
Another tip is you can more accurately locate the latitude and longitude coordinates if you click the "autocoords" link, as it will show you the actual position the coordinates are describing, and it will automatically update the coordinates as you move the screen around.

ive slightly changed the bit where you click submit in order to add the link back to geobloggers, you can now change the text + link text that gets added (though you should keep the URL the same) and it will store your choice of text in a cookie, so next time you dont have to type it all out again.
eg say you dont like the link under your image saying
"<a href=http://www.geobloggers.com>GeoTagged</a>"
you could change it to read:
"This image has been <a href=http://www.geobloggers.com>GeoTagged</a> Click the link to see its location on the map"
or simply
"<a href=http://www.geobloggers.com>Mapped</a>"
or whatever you fancy. The next time you geotag an image, it will remember what you typed last time and prefill the box for you.
Hope this makes sense.

ive updated the greasemonkey script for google maps (and renamed the file) you can get the new version here: steeev.f2o.org/flickr/geotag.gmaps.user.js
ive basically added some functionality for the placemarkers, if you place 2 markers on a map, a new link will appear, called "show route" when you click it google will draw a route between the 2 points, telling you the length of the route in miles and the approximate journey time, and also list the directions to get from the first point to the second point.
At present this function just works for the last 2 placemarkers left on the map.
One thing to note is that it buggers up the "Add Geotags to flickr image" code, so dont use the "show route" function while you are in the process of adding a geotag to an image.

You can add a "range" parameter to the geobloggers URL on your photo page if you find that the default range of 0.05 is too narrow. For example, on this photo:

I've added "range=0.3" at the end of the URL to show a wider area with more photos. The default range of 0.05 meant that only this single photo was shown.
The URL will look like this:
<a href="http://geobloggers.com?range=0.3">geotagged</a>

A similar parameter to switch between the map and satelitte views would also be handy.

ive added another new feature to the greasemonkey script for google maps.
As well as showing the route between 2 markers, you can now measure the distance between 2 markers, this measurement is for the direct straight line route between the 2 points, and shows the distance in miles and kilometers. Using this function doesnt conflict with the geotagging process.
You can get the new version here: steeev.f2o.org/flickr/geotag.gmaps.user.js

Ive discovered that bookmarklets designed for maps.google.com also work on the geobloggers.com site. Heres a couple of bookmarklets you can try out
The first when clicked will recenter the geobloggers map to your current location, which will show all the pics taken near to where the map is centered.
The second is like the autocoords feature from the googlemaps gm script, though ive added a "update page" link next to the coordinates, which recenters the map similar to the previous bookmarklets function.
i tried converting the bookmarklets to greasemonkey scripts but it didnt work.
you can get the bookmarklets here:
steeev.f2o.org/flickr/bookmarklets.htm
btw ive updated the geotagging greasemonkey user scripts again, both the flickr one and google maps one, you can get them from the usual place. Whats changed? not much, ive just fixed some javascript errors, and the "show route" function works again now.

I managed to get the greasemonkey script for geobloggers.com working. you can get it here: steeev.f2o.org/flickr/geobloggers.user.js
ive also fixed the autocoords and measure distance bug in the google maps greasemonkey script, which stopped the values being displayed above the map. you can get the updated version here: steeev.f2o.org/flickr/geotag.gmaps.user.js

A hint for non-US people...
As Europe is not covered in google maps (apart from the UK), I use www.maporama.com to find the exact location and then copy the coords shown on the bottom left side of the screen.

I just got this link from another thread, but www.multimap.com. I think it's a tad more precise than maporama (quick look).

hobo_pd and paulip88, you might be interested in checking out my new multimap geotagging scripts :)
BTW as a followup to mrjoros tip on using the range parameter, it can also be used to narrow down the results, eg, if the location you geotagged at is very popular and for example returns 150 images in that area when you click the geobloggers link, you will know that the page will take ages to load. you can reduce the number of images that get displayed by using a smaller number for the range value appended to the geobloggers link.
eg if you use a range of about 0.001 or 0.003 like this:
http://geobloggers.com/?range=0.003
it should in most cases limit the number of geotagged images in the surrounding area being displayed to just a handful, and thus the page should load much quicker.
