About Flora of the British Isles: A Photographic Guide
WELCOME to “Flora of the British Isles: A Photographic Guide “
The aim of the Group is to build an indexed online Identification Guide of the WILD plants of the British Isles, including the Republic of Ireland. While just browsing the photos is enjoyable, the real benefit of the group is in the indexes of plants represented by the Group’s photos, to help identify plants which you might come across.
ACCEPTABLE PHOTOS
The group accepts photos of wild flowers, conifers, ferns, horsetails and club-mosses, which are described or listed in the references given below.
No mosses, lichens, algae or fungi.
No garden plants unless they are found in the wild,
No plants in 'gardened' situations like council plantings along streets, parks etc.
Photos should be realistic and should show features useful in identification of species; flowers, stems, leaves, fruit, buds, twigs, bark, etc, are all acceptable.
Over-enhanced, or severely processed, or 'artistically' modified photos are not wanted and will be removed from the group pool.
Tagging :
- Where possible photos should be tagged with the correct botanical species name. Please ensure that names of more than one word are enclosed in “quotes”, e.g. “Bellis perennis” .
- Subspecies is abbreviated to ssp.
- Untagged photos will also be accepted, but may be tagged by the group administrators.
- Wrongly tagged photos will be queried by the administrators, and if they are not corrected they will be removed from the group pool.
- Please do NOT geo-tag exact locations of rare species
- Additional information such as colour, family name, genus can prove helpful.
References: Any of the following publications cover those plants that are acceptable:
- The New Flora of the British Isles by Stace (2010) for the most up-to-date names
- The Wild Flower Key by Rose & O’Reilly (2006)
- Collins Flower Guide by Streeter et al (2009)
- The Wild Flower Society website (click here), if you do not have any of the above.
THE INDEXES
Indexes of scientific names and common names can be accessed through the blue links shown above. These list all species covered by the Group’s photos. Any correctly tagged photo will be indexed automatically, provided the name is already there. For species new to the Group, one of the Admins will create new entries to the Indexes. Because the photos are taken across the country, the index will often have a good range of photos of a specific species illustrating, for instance, the different habitats, range of colours, etc. that may occur in a species. Clicking on a species name in the index will show all photos in the Group pool of that plant.
HELPLINE
The ID Helpline link shown above can be used by anyone who is uncertain about the identification of a plant. If you wish, you can post a photo of such plants on the Group pool and include it in the ID Helpline. If you do please first follow the Helpline instructions. Show as many facets of the plant as possible for a better chance of an accurate identification.
THANKS - ENJOY
