The official date of the Campout is June 27, 2009. Many of us camp on that date and all sorts of other times as well. Those of us at the National Wildlife Federation would LOVE to hear from you about what were the best things that happened at the 2009 Campout - so we hope you will share your stories today!

My favorite thing about the campout was our nature walk and watching it at night.
We saw 2 herons, a phoebe, anna's hummingbird, mockingbird, house sparrows, golden finch, red finch, crows, ants, 2 toads, and a moth. We heard a coyote and crickets. We were sad that we didn't see an owl.
My grandma told stories and some funny ghost stories. We ate lots of roasted marshmellows and smores! Sometimes I roasted them too much and they fell on the ground.
It was really fun to have my friend come and spend the night with me.

It was our first camping outing and we had a great time! My favorite part was watching the kids, they were so excited about the whole adventure. I think they had the most fun playing with the flashlights.

Many of our Parks had public events and we will be posting information on the others soon. First Landing State Park had a special program in conjunction with the Armed Services YMCA thanks to financial assistance from the Sierra Club.

The Rolling Plains Chapter of the Texas Master Naturalists hosted an event at Lake Arrowhead State Park. We had between 50-60 participants. We JD Clark, singer/songwriter, perform a sing-along. I had designed a scavenger hunt for the nature trail. The parents had as much or more fun than the kids. Following that activity, our chapter provided s'mores for all the state park guests. We had door prizes donated from Walmart with the grand prize a tent, two camping stools, and two flashlights. The evening ended with one of our chapter members calling up screech owls for the guest and then an astronomer brought out a large telescope to look at the full moon.
Everyone asked when we were going to host another event. It was a huge success.

Our favorite thing about camping is the memories. The stories we make and get to tell every time we sit around the fire. There are no cell phone, no i-pods, tvs video games; just us; just family and friends and new memories. The children grow up so fast in this world and we tend to forget what it is all about. Camping is a great opportunity to sit back and remember what is really important and why we are all here.

This was our first family camp. The best part was we're one of the families that won for the "Let's Go Camping" program of the Nevada State Park & Washoe Lake State Park. It was an all-expense free camp. They provided the tent, sleeping bags, flashlight & food. We're so blessed & lucky to have won out of 100 registrants.

COSD Backyard Campout Coordinator says:

As the committee chair and director of the 2009 Great American Backyard Campout held by the County of San Diego Parks and Recreation Department, my favorite moment was seeing over 150 teens pitching tents for the first time in their life and enjoying every minute of it. From the "will the bugs get me" comment to the "I have to sleep on the ground" remarks - They all really enjoyed their trip and participated in a wide range of activities including: Leave no trace, baggo tournament, dutch oven cooking, flashlight tag, night hike and campfire skits!!! Some of the comments on the surveys included:
"I cant wait to go home and do this with my family"!
"I loved seeing all the stars during the nighthike"!
"The owls sound like Pterodactyls"!
"When can we do this again"!

Thank you to the commitee members who came together to provide this experience to teens from all across San Diego County!! I look forward to making next years event bigger and better!
