Purely by looking at what's >12Mp, here's the list:
Fujifilm FinePix F60fd
Nikon Coolpix P6000
Ricoh Caplio GX200
Sony DSC-W300
Fujifilm FinePix F100fd
Kodak Z1285
Pentax Optio A40
Nikon Coolpix P5100
Canon PowerShot A650 IS
Samsung NV20
Fujifilm FinePix F50fd
Kodak Z1275
Casio Exilim EX-Z1200 SR
Sony DSC-W200
Looking at specs, there's 2 close contenders:
Nikon Coolpix P6000
Nikon Coolpix P5100
...and two not quite so close:
Ricoh Caplio GX200
Fujifilm FinePix F60fd
The P6000 has a smaller zoom and narrower shutter speed range, but it has a lens thread (whereas you need an adapter for the G9). The P5100 doesn't do RAW.

If it doesn't shoot raw and have a hotshoe it's no competition to me.
Smaller zoom range is not a problem, what I want is faster maximum aperture.

Another consideration in favor of the G9 , is that it takes unbelievable macro shots....even in low light. I love my G9 and use it more often than I do my D200. Downside, make sure you have an extra battery.

I do not think there are any close competition to G9, G10 maybe, but I had not see one yet. I bought my G9 because I had pain in my neck when carry my D200 plus 105VR all days. May be I am too old for a camera and lens that weigh more than two kgs. I love the G9 and found it very convenient to use for macro works.
This picture was taken with D200 plus Nikon 105VR:

The only competition are the Lumix LX-3/Leica D-LUX4, and the Nikon P6000. The G9 and G10 has to be the coolest looking ones with the best detailed shots, the LX-3/D-LUX4 has better noise handling, but is "soft" and loses detail, the only problem with them is they could easily slip off your fingers due to the lack of grip to make the camera more streamlined.
I don't really know much about the Nikon, I think the ISO 6400 is BS...
You might want to get the G9 after they release the G10 because they might drop the price by a hundred bucks.

I'm anxiously waiting for Olympus' upcoming m4/3 camera. Not exactly in the P&S category (since it's an "interchangeable lens type") but when it comes to good looks, I think it's on par with the G9. :P Let's just hope they don't go crazy with the pricing...

the ricoh GR Digital II (zero shutter lag hyperfocal "snap" mode)
and the sigma DP1 (dslr-size sensor in a point n shoot)
were the other two i was looking at before i bought my G9. i settled on the G9 for cost reasons.

I was looking a the lumix that's the same price. I went G9 for the size and pocketability. There are probably a few out there. most point and shoot are great for macro shots if that is something you are into.

For me the Nikon P6000 is a real cometitor to the G9/G10.

I've got the G9 and the Nikon P5100 (as well as NikonD80).
I was really disappointed with he P5100 and overwhelmed by the G9 (only had it since mid August!).

I'm in exactly the same boat. I'm looking for something that will shoot RAW and has a hotshoe for when I don't want to lug around my D300. I've been leaning toward the Lumix LX-3, but first reports have me looking at the G10 (or G9) and the Nikon P6000. Nikon's Microsoft RAW issues scare me (I use Aperture on Mac) but I see that Adobe Camera RAW supports the P6000 now, so it must not be totally closed.
Completely on the fence otherwise. Thanks for the comments in this thread. Hope the decision will get clearer once there are more of these cameras in the wild.
