About Creating Ladysmith's Future
John Hanson Mitchell Let your imagination be heard. Join in writing the next chapter of Ladysmith’s story. The story began more than five millennia ago, when the Chemainus chose this area to live in complement with nature. Their stories alone are enough to fill volumes... In the late 19th century, nature was switched from a source to a resource as the railway reached Oyster Bay, and men risked – some gave – their lives to keep commerce thriving...The transformation of Oyster Bay into Ladysmith is the community’s most oft-told tale, keeping alive James Dunsmuir’s vision to tell a story. “Stories are the creative conversion of life itself into a more powerful, clearer, more meaningful experience. They are the currency of human contact.” The question we face is: What chapter are we on, and where does the journey lead us from here? Over the past few years, many in the town have expressed concern that the rapid development of Ladysmith will obscure or obliterate all that the community holds sacred. The Town Council has listened and is taking action to ensure not only that Ladysmith will retain its essence, but also that the town’s future will be guided by the community’s vision and dreams. Between August 23rd and October 4th, HB Lanarc, a leading planner of sustainable communities, will host a series of five intensive, informative and highly interactive visioning sessions open to all community members. The story that emerges from these workshops will guide the town's future development. This group was created to provide an expressive forum for community members before and between the workshops, and for those whose location or schedule precludes them from participating. Each person in this group is encouraged to upload a photo - or more than one...maybe many more - that captures what Ladysmith means to you; write as much or as little as you want about why you chose the image(s) you did.
