About Funchal - The city of Madeira

Funchal, the capital of the archipelago on Madeira’s south coast, in a beautiful bay washed by the warm waters of the Atlantic Ocean and surrounded by mountains and deep valleys. The city became an important point between the old and new worlds.

The laid-back city of Funchal has plenty of leisure activities to offer. You can visit its magnificent gardens, wander through its picturesque streets and squares with Portuguese cobblestone pavements or simply stop and relax at one of the pavement cafes in the city center.

Funchal’s museums and historical buildings are also well worth a visit and there are art galleries with works by national and international artists.

But there is much more to see in Funchal. Lots of these places are not mentioned in the travel guides, however they are known by the Funchalenses.

To discover these hidden gems of Funchal, we therefore created this Flickr Group, with the objective to invite all Funchal visitors to share their captured secrets shots of the city.

We urge that when you add only photos of Funchal (city of Madeira island) and that you inlcude a description as wel a location (name of the street, area, building etc.)
