About Frank Furness

Philadelphia architect Frank Furness was born in 1839 and lived until 1912. He served with the Union Army for 3.5 years during the civil war, interrupting his architectural training under Richard Morris Hunt, the first American to study at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris.

Furness was renowned for his bombastic Victorian designs, characterized by ornate detailing and a dramatic color palette, yielding over 600 buildings in Philadelphia and elsewhere.
