About Forty Shillings Fine

There seem to be quite a few signs around the British Isles warning of a fine of up to forty shillings (part of a UK money system made obsolete in 1971) for anyone failing to shut the gate.

This group is for:

» photos of those signs complete with appropriate surroundings
» signs with different value UK pre-decimalization fines
» other warning signs with UK pre-decimalization currencies

Please consider placing your photos on the Flickr map, or at least including location information in the description and/or tags.

Incidentally, forty shillings seems to have been the threshold at which claims could be handled by local courts, a breakpoint set in law since late mediaeval times. Anything larger had to go to a higher court with attendant hassles and expense.
