About Florence Nightingale (whose name shall never die)

So much has been written about Florence Nightingale (1820-1910) there is no need to repeat it here. Suffice to say she came to public attention during the Crimea War after Sidney Herbert, the Secretary of State at War, asked her to take a party of nurses, at government' expense, to Scutari.

The rest is of course, history, and 'The Lady of the Lamp' became etched on the public consciousness [and hopefully still is although in this day and age, it seems we may be sure of nothing].

In Henry Longfellow's words:

Lo! in that hour of misery
A lady with a lamp I see
Pass through the glimmering gloom,
And flit from room to room.
