Bird Photography: Choosing the Correct Equipment
Bird & photography can become a compelling pastime, though it requires time, patience, and a little investment to achieve the best results. The key to capturing outstanding bird images is getting close. For this, you will need a telephoto lens and a camera to which it can be fixed, or a digital camera with a long zoom range.

Light
Most photographs of birds are taken in natural daylight, but it is worth assessing the "quality" of the light before pressing the shutter.

For example, diffuse sunlight, filtered through thin cloud or patchy leaves, is ideal for capturing a naturalistic portrait of a bird. Morning and evening light illuminates a bird from the side, adding interest to your pictures, while overhead light in the middle of the day tends to be less flattering. Direct sunlight produces dense shadows that can appear as ugly "black holes" in a photograph; firing a flashgun set to low power can help "fill in" these shadows to produce a more balanced image. Flash can also be used to "freeze" a bird in motion.
