more about this:
revcanonical.appspot.com/
basically, flickr is now providing pre-shortened versions of all its photopage urls.
like www.flickr.com/photos/striatic/3397905628/ is also flic.kr/p/6bg9XN
flickr owns the flic.kr domain, so it is all in house and you don't have to get a third party involved or increase the risk of phishing.

I noticed that the pre-shortened URL hasn't been created for all photos yet (I tried it with a photo from November). So maybe they're waiting until they have 100% coverage to roll it out.

@jakerome the URLs exist for all photos.
The shortening is just math, a base58 transform of the photo ID I'll get around to documenting soon.
Right now I'm only publishing a rev="canonical" header on the "unadorned" version of a photo URL
www.flickr.com/photos/jakerome/15023401 is shortened to flic.kr/p/2jZWa but www.flickr.com/photos/jakerome/15023401/in/datetaken doesn't currently advertise a shortened version.

Sweet. Will the shortened URLs be accessible via the "ShareThis!" interface?

Oh, OK. That explains why one of the tools I found to get the short URL didn't work-- it just finds the rev="canonical" bit.
And boy, that's a random photo you found in my stream!

Any plans to put this on the set pages? Those are the urls I tend to post often, and they are quite long.
Also, thanks for this -- I've been enjoying watching this unfold. :)

it'd be cool to have this available to copy in paste, but more important to integrate into a "tweet this" type feature.

@striatic why do you think I I built it and started the rev="canonical" conversation ;)

This is a great tool, I just added it to my Safari toolbar.
When I'm at flickr the url get the flic.kr, but when I'm on any other website I automatically get the tinyurl shorted URL, great idea.

As well as the shortened URLs for individual photo pages, I just tried flic.kr/blech and that redirects to my photo page, www.flickr.com/photos/blech/ - which might be useful for some people. This doesn't seem to be advertised with a entry in the HTML, yet, but I assume that will come with time.

@blech I'm not making any promises about URLs we don't advertise, there were some concerns raised, but it seems like a good idea to me.
Also some notes on manufacturing short urls

The lack of explicit support (until and unless it shows up in the HTML) is duly noted. And thanks again for explicitly stating the short URL manufacturing method.

These short URLs really need to be exposed on the page. Please?

Also on this subject, the great GM script that makes photo page shorties easier to get to:

Short URL for group threads, please! Now that tinyurl is banned in the group blast box, posting links to more than a couple threads is pretty much unworkable.

Does the URL shortener only work for photos because you can still access photos with just their ID using this?
www.flickr.com/photo.gne?id=2293005459
There isn't an equivalent for sets that I know of. That is, you need to know who created a set to access one, but for photos you don't
