i'm having a hard time wrapping around this. if you see that a pic is part of a set, and can click in (one add'l click) then so can the members. they don't see anything you don't see.
groups aggregate individual items for members to view. sets are presentations that individual users prepare for visitors to their streams.
there are requests to be able to create sets in groups, but they should not replace the pool presentation anymore than they should replace the individual account-holder's stream.

Why not post a link to the set in a thread?

Why can't sets be presentations that groups prepare for visitors to their pool?
I'm not saying the sets organization should replace the group pool, but I do think a groups list of sets should be easily accessible. I thought about posting links in the threads, but won't they get buried eventually once enough responses/new messages are posted?
I do think it is too much clicking. If a group has even just twenty sets of photos, members who didn't take the pictures could theoretically have to click on up to twenty pictures to find the set they're looking for, right?
I would be happy just to have the sets listed on the right side of the screen under a heading like, "This group's sets."
I may be missing some feature of flickr groups that would solve this problem, but to me having the group page only show individual pictures is like opening a box of photos all thrown together. Hard to find what you're looking for.
If anyone can see some way that I'm just missing the boat, I'd appreciate hearing other existing alternatives to my idea.

Without knowing exactly what you're trying to accomplish it's hard to suggest workarounds, but if the admins are involved in the process of deciding what sets should be displayed on the front page, they can always link to them in the Group Description. The main issue is that sets belong to users, not to groups, and it probably doesn't make sense for a group to display all of the sets a photo is in. Like if I have a photo that's in a set called Portraits and a set called Photos I Took Last Week, posting that photo to a portraiture group probably shouldn't subject everyone in that group to a link of all the (mostly non-portrait) photos I took in the last week.

What I want as a Group Administrator is to be able to SUBDIVIDE the pictures in the group into sets - each containing pictures which deal with a subset of the group. For example - in a group which features pictures of people only, one would like to be able to divide the pool into say street shots, formal portraits, B&W pictures etc etc. That way it is easier to COMPARE pictures one with another. The only alternative now is to keep setting up multiple groups related to minor subjects. That poses problems for posters - looking around for all those small niche groups.
From a posting perspective I want to be able to GROUP GROUPS - the opposite of the above. If I have a flower picture for example I would like to be able to drop it onto a SET (or Group) of groups to post it to all the flower groups I have joined - rather than looking around on my list for each flower group. Also I would group together groups with similar posting limits.
One lives in hope!

DrDctr "The only alternative now is to keep setting up multiple groups related to minor subjects"
Many groups do this by starting topics in which people can post a thumbnail or small image. Each thread in the group then becomes a mini-topic.
It's much easier to keep people active if they can stay within a single group and post all the different subdivisions of photos.
But, being able to create sets in groups would make things much nicer.

Tags work nicely too.

There's a whole family of symmetries that could extend flickr. Sets in Groups. Groups in Groups. Tags on things other than photos : Users, Sets, Collections and Groups or even Comments. I could stroke my beard for days thinking about them, and how horrible life could get for the programmers as a result.
But meanwhile, have you noticed the "in-set" part of the URL? See how it controls which set is opened when a photo is viewed? That could be used to control what visitors see, if you are a little html-savvy. Clicking the +/- buttons before copying the URL is the way here.
Or you could recommend that your group members post a easy-to find link to their sets (you may have to school them in how to post a link) along with a representative image. You may want to encourage positing only _one_ image to the pool, so that every image represents a set, and every set is represented only once.
Or, this could be the best one, get your members to create a tiling of their set, e.g. using fd's mosaic maker, and get them to post that, including a link back to their set. Just for luck, they should put their new tiling _in_ their set, thus (see the very last photo in this set) www.flickr.com/photos/drift-words/sets/59930/

I really feel quite strongly about this. It must be an oversight and therefore needs tending to. Simply put - if you want to help members of your group find photos according to a topic or sub-category, it would make so much sense to allow sets to appear in the group page rather than just the unorganised pool. As things stand, this is not fit for my needs.

I think that groups should have the options to organize in sets too. I'm just starting my first group and have started 3 visual games in discussion threads two of wich would be far better suited to subsets of the group where group member could click through to photo's which are part of the games.
I was very dissapointed that I could not make sets within the group and it is cumbersome to have people going to thier page and clicking sizes and and copying html to paste in the thread. When the photos could more easily just be sent to the group pool with tags as to the game they belong with an organized into sets.
I've noticed that it is hard to understand what some suggestions mean withoug refernce. Here is the group I am starting. "What in the world" and "where in the world" are the threads that would be best suited to sets within the group. I'm sure many other groups could benefit from the ability to for sets of organized photos within the group

Yes Flickr, it would be great to be able to add Sets to Groups. I need to be able to make Sets of different categories within the same Group. Pleeeeease.

There are still a whole lot of folk out there that would like to see a 'Sets' function in Groups. Come on flickr people, sort it out please.

I agree too. Adding or creating sets within a group would be a great feature.
Organizing images within a group is just not possible in the current situation.

I support the idea of being able to create sets within groups also. I've set up a group for our photography club, and it would be nice to be able to make subsets by photographer and subject type at least.

Hm, missed this topic before! Let's merge it over to the much *larger* sets in groups topic here, which is also linked from the group front page: www.flickr.com/groups/flickrideas/discuss/72157600094223331/
