So far, the only time I see that is when a post in that thread has been deleted. (Example: spam in Help Forum. Even after staff deletes the spam, the post count is still elevated, which fools this script...)

Let me get back to you on that as there have been seemingly so many updates (to me at least). It is something I'm watching though. However atm they are all "empty".
[edit]
Just as I went to another page this thread was marked as new and it was my own post. Idk if that's intended or not.
[edit again]
this page: www.flickr.com/groups/flickrhacks/discuss/721575944100451... just showed up as having 18 "new" posts.
[edit and again]
also this: www.flickr.com/groups/flickrhacks/discuss/721575945655186... page just showed 127 "new" posts.

I've only just upgraded to FF8.0 (GM 0.9.13), and still functional.
Chrome seems to be working fine, too.
Will be upgrading to FF9. Compiling will take a couple of hours, though, and today being somewhat of a special day, it could take another day before any update.

Hmm - by the looks of things, the new check introduced in the last patch results in the redefinition of the GM_* functions, even on Firefox with GM. As a result, it reads the configuration from an (empty) localStorage.
The script itself is working - I can see the configuration link in the Organize & Create menu.

I don't know if this can help but I can see the minus sign and the plus sign. If I add a new watch it works, but I don't see the old ones. If I filter the about:config vars I see mentions of the old watches, but not for the new added ones.

Chrome users will have to switch to the Chrome Extension version: chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/edbpbkkonoaiiflfhbmkl... Switching is painless: the extension will use the data stored by the scripted version.

I'm running FF 8.0.1 and GM 0.9.13 and I had the same thing happen to me after updating to the most recent script, but just once. After I clicked on the icon for this thread, it showed up with (probably) every post highlighted. Then when I went back, the count was gone and it has behaved properly since.

Using FF 9 for a couple of hours did not show anything weird for me. And with Chrome, I have seen that behavior only once: when Flickr had the hiccups. But it was not on Discuss threads, only on group pool and contacts pages.
If this is a case of bad error handling during Flickr hiccups, or another rare event, this is going to be a though one to debug :-(
Keep me posted.

OK, I did that with several threads and it's still doing it. Also I forgot to mention that sometimes when it takes me to the last page (as I have it set) there's nothing highlighted there but the "<-- prev" is highlighted.

That's interesting information. My first impression was "hey, that's a difference of 200, the number of public photos for non-pro accounts". But it's only 196. Unless she has 4 private photos in her last 200 uploads...
Probably too far fetched.
It would've made more sense if the script would have marked all photos as new. You don't have any photostream in your watch-list that happens to have 196 photos in it, have you (or even a watched group pool)? If the script would store that value in the wrong record, during one run, it would obviously give false results in a next run. And the same would apply for pools, and threads.

The script's main purpose is to get notifications of certain events that Flickr itself does not provide.
Activity on your own photos is not only provided on the page you refer to yourself, but you can also set your Flickr preferences to get notified by email on that activity.
