Known issues:
. When you're on a group's Discuss page, click the '+' icon to add the group, and then visit one of the threads, the script will consider all posts as new!
solved in v0.1.29
. new threads, that have no replies yet, are not reported as new solved in v0.2.1
. threads that return to the front page, have all there posts counted as new solved in v0.2.1
. when a post is removed, the script should record the changed number of replies solved in v0.2.3
. when the plus icon (or the minus icon) wraps to a new line, it no longer works!? this was/is a conflict with other scripts adding text to the top line (using innerHTML!)
. (some new) has no mark this thread as read icon solved in v0.2.5
. when reading a thread, the counter on top keeps showing the number of unread posts for that thread solved in v0.2.8
. if watching a particular thread, and its group also, mark this thread as read does not work on the thread watch v0.2.9
. removing a watch when there are new posts, removes only the envelope, not the compact 'x new' number

Update... For some reason, every time I come to Flickr, this script shows new posts in the few groups I selected. I go to the groups only to find no new posts. And even when there *are* new posts, the count is way off. (For instance, yesterday it showed 23 new posts in Flickr Ideas, when there had actually only been three new comments since my previous visit.)
I finally uninstalled it.

Are you the victim of this switching browsers, maybe?
If you read new posts with Chrome, and then switch to FF, the script will still see those posts as new.
Saint Seminole wrote And even when there *are* new posts, the count is way off.
That sounds like a possible bug. Will look into it.

Too bad. But thanks for trying it out.

That's what I thought at first... Since I do occasionally read a thread in one browser and then return to the same group in another. :-)
So I tried using just Firefox that day. After reading every new thread in a group, I had closed my browser and went to lunch. When I came back, the script said there were new posts in that group. When I went to the group, there were no new posts...
(Possibility? There actually *were* new posts, but admin deleted them? I just now thought of that...)

I have not any serious problem with this script, in fact I Iove it. It has mainly worked as expected but if I post a comment it does then indicate that as a new post. It would be great if it could ignore my own comments

Are you sure it's this script doing this? The current stable version of the Admin tool contains this bug. It has been solved in v0.1.25b (available from the beta page).
If you only see this behavior in the Syndicate, it's the Admin tool.

Just got something similar: when opening some topic, the envelopes came up, showing 81 new posts in FlickrIdeas. Visiting the group's Discuss page revealled that there were only 3 new (and this time the envelope reported it correctly), but a thread that was previously not on the first page was on top, with 78 posts in total. 78+3=81!

The vertical bar is a little faint, but better than nothing. Thanks again (and so far in Chrome, I'm liking the script).
Only one little "bug":
When you add a new group to the watchlist, it seems to pick up *all* the first page of discussions, so I usually get "19+new" showing right off the bat, even if the group hasn't had a post in weeks...

It's the same vertical bar used elsewhere on Flickr (I'm trying to keep close to the original Flickr style). If you have an alternative, just let me know.

Instead of adding that to the bug list, how about a new version?
v0.2.3:

Don't get me wrong, I do like the vertical line. :-) Lots of Flickr's normal gray interface stuff is very faint near the edges of my monitor (until I move my head's position).

Well, it's not that the page reloads, or anything, but at the top of the page I get multiple + icons.

Our versions are close, but different indeed. Mine is 5.0.335.0 dev running on a 64-bit Linux.

I am currently 'following' 8 groups and 3 threads completely successfully. However I have one thread that is playing up. The script reports that it has, say, 8 new posts so I go and have a look. Having looked it now reports that I haven't looked at any of the posts. I dismiss this from the discussion page and all is well until it reports more New posts and I go and look. Having looked, it again reports that I haven't looked at any of the posts. I dismiss again and around we go. I do wonder if this is because it is an excessively long thread 94,000 posts and rising?

Forget about Opera support.
The script runs fine. Or so it seems. I noticed the count was off for this group. I could not really pinpoint the cause.
So I removed the group from the watch list. Refreshed the page.
And it's back! The envelope for the group, with the count that is off, and the (x new) indications!
Looking in the script's preferences, I can see the group is no longer in the list of selected groups.
It surely has something to do with caching, but even when I go to, say, page 37, which I'm quite sure I haven't opened before, I can see the script at work for this group!
After clearing the cache (Preferences, History, ..), no change. Still there.
Concentrating on Firefox and Chrome from now on.
[edit] it seems that in Opera, the '-' icon on a page does not work; removing a group from the Preferences dialog does work!

Yesterday in Chrome, I noticed one of my groups on the watchlist kept saying "4 new" no matter what I did. I removed the group and re-added it; it was fine after that. My first bug in a while, so no complaints. :-)

Now that the script uses the group's feed (if available) to determine if there are any new posts, it is dependent on the feed provided by Flickr. That feed is always a bit behind. But we're talking about seconds probably, minutes at worst.

Some of you may have seen me active in the Help Forum. I was testing the newly added support for the Help Forums.
But I have way too many notification watches defined :)
Every Flickr page I opened, took too long to load, because the script checks for new posts for every item in the watch list. That's why I implemented (configurable) delays.
In the Preferences dialog you will find an overall delay between checks option, which defaults to the current behavior: no delay
For every type of supported item, you can define a separate delay.
important note about the use of delayed checking
v0.5.0:

There is something strange about this.
If you hover an envelope, you'll see the background light up in blue (it's a html link after all). That background is nicely aligned with the text. The icon is up a couple of pixels.

Just for your information. On the photopage where the enveloppe is top aligned there isn't style="vertical-align: middle; " as attribute in the img-tag as it is on other pages.
When I add newPostsIcon.set('style', 'vertical-align: middle'); to your code it works for me.

As a moderator or admin of several groups, this script has really helped me save a ton of time.
With the notifications on top, I can see what groups have some action in the discussions and know where to go, instead of spending a long time hitting each group looking for new posts or digging through RSS feeds that are mixed in with my other feeds. (life is not all about Flickr).
So thanks for this one. Saves time and makes admin/moderation life a bit easier

Hebbervus Sagax wrote On the photopage where the enveloppe is top aligned there isn't style="vertical-align: middle; " That is some user feedback! Thanks!
v0.5.8:
. vertical alignment of envelopes fixed
. bug fix: show (x new) in left column of help forum threads
. bug fix: handle thousands separator in replies number on discuss page / help forum

Unfortunately
I think there is a malfunction in the script.
He notified me five new photos in the photostream of my friend, but there is no change.
I've noticed that gives me the same thing every time I reconnect to Flickr.

Sometimes, it's fixable. Simply click the minus button "-" to un-add that photostream. Then click the plus button "+" to re-add it.
(This always works for me when a group discussion returns false positives...)

: ...Yes, I had already tried to do what you say.
But then if I get disconnected from Flickr and then I reconnect, I always notice that false message of 5 new photos.

krisdecurtis wrote But then if I get disconnected from Flickr and then I reconnect If Firefox crashes, it won't store the updated values. Restarting Firefox, and signing in, will then show the old values. Is it something similar you're experiencing?

: ...No, is not this. Occurs when I close the Flickr session normally, and then I reopen it.
If you want I'll give you the link of the photostream, so you can try:
www.flickr.com/photos/fallingleaves0105/
You must sign out and then sign in on Flickr

I added that stream to my notifications. Closed browser. Reopened browser... It seems to be working fine in Chrome.
EDIT:
Even when I sign out and sign in again, it still works for me...

Looks fine for me too?
Are you using Firefox, or Chrome? [edit] missed that post :-)
Are you using Flickr in English, or some other language?

Ah. Okay.
So I just tested this in FF 3.6.8, and again it worked as expected...
Is it possible you have other scripts running? (Often, scripts interfere with each other unintentionally...)
