FlickrNotifications - notifies of new posts in your favorite discussion groups, or photo pages, or ...

view profile

Alesa Dam says:

FlickrNotifications notifies when unread posts are available in your favorite groups, or selected photo pages, new members in a group, new photos in a photostream, ...
FlickrNotifications is available for Firefox, Seamonkey, and Opera (v10.53 and up), as a Greasemonkey script, or as a Google Chrome extension.

Screenshot - New Flickr Post Notification

With this script you can define a watch on
. discussion pages (notifies of new posts)
. discussion threads (notifies of new posts)
. photo pages (notifies of new comments)
. photostreams (notifies of new photos)
. group members (notifies of new members)
. group pools (notifies of new photos)
. group pool 'pending items' (notifies of new photos)
. reversed contacts (notifies when someone adds you as a contact)
. help forums (notifies of new posts)
. help forum topics (notifies of new posts)
. Flickr apps (notifies of new comments)
. set pages (notifies of new comments)
. user's favorites page (notifies of new favorites)

And as a nice side-effect, it has reduced my number of Flickr tabs considerably!

Rationale

To follow up on discussions, one can use the RSS feed for the group. This works very well.
Unless it is a private group: no RSS feed is available for private groups.
And there are no RSS feeds for individual threads.

This script is not limited to private groups, though.

This script was part of the UNIFIED CheckPlay Admin tool, for notifying admins/mods of 'backroom' messages.

Adding a group's discussions page

• go to the Discuss page of the group you want notifications for
• click the '+' icon next to your FlickrMail envelope:

You will find the '+' icon on any of the other pages that are supported.

Removing a group

• go to the Discuss page of the group you no longer want notifications for
• click the '-' icon next to your FlickrMail envelope:

(or use the preferences dialog)

You will find the '-' icon on any of the other pages that are supported, and that are in your watch list.

Notification

On almost any Flickr page, you will be notified if a new item is available in any of the selected pages:

Screenshot - New Flickr Post Notification

You can click any of the envelopes to go to the selected group, or topic, or photo. Hovering the mouse over an envelope will show the group's name, or the topic's title, or the photo's title and owner, as a popup title.

On the Discuss page of a selected group, the replies column of threads with new posts (or new threads) are highlighted and show the number of new posts in that thread.

Version check

The script checks for script updates every 12 hours. When an update is available, it is announced at the bottom of the screen:

Click the notification to visit the install page of the script/extension.

The Changes link will take you to this page (opens in a new tab).

Preferences

The script provides an icon that will open the preferences dialog when clicked:

Screenshot - 05312010 - 08:36:10 AM

go to thread's last page (envelope)
By default, the link on the envelopes take you to the first page of the thread. Most threads don't span multiple pages, so that's fine. For threads that span multiple pages, this preferences will take you to the last page, where the new posts are.
Applicable for selected discussion threads, help forum items, and photo pages.

go to thread's last page (Flickr links)
By default, the link to a discussion thread on the Discuss page will take you to the first page of the thread. Most threads don't span multiple pages, so that's fine. For threads that span multiple pages, this preferences will take you to the last page, where the new posts are.
Applicable for selected group Discuss pages.

colorize new posts
The script will indicate new posts in a discussion thread, if it knows the exact number of new posts. Only works if you are on the last page of a discussion thread (or help forum item, or photo page), so it's best used together with the go to thread's last page preference.
If there are more unread posts than the ones on the page, the prev button of the paginator will also be colorized.

move refresh button to the right
The "refresh" (or reload) button is located on the left of the envelopes, by default. Select this option to move it to the right.

list envelopes in Flickr's Global Navigation Bar
Lists the envelopes (and other buttons) into Flickr's Global Navigation Bar.
With this option set, the FlickrNotification icons stay visible on top of the page, together with Flickr's menu.

Reload timeout
The reload button will change from light grey to red in the time specified (in hours). After this timeout, the reload button will start to blink.

Selected <something>
Click the blue arrow to expand/collapse the category.
For each item in your watch-list, there is a remove icon, and an icon to change the envelope's background color.

remove icon: click the remove icon to remove the photo/thread/group from your watch-list; the item will not be removed until you click the OK button

background color icon: click the background color icon to reveal the color picker; select a color; it will be used as a background color for the item's envelope; the background color icon will reflect the chosen color;
the background color will be set on the envelope when you click the OKbutton

OK button stores the changed preferences, without the need for a page reload.

Cancel button closes the preferences dialog, without saving any of the changes made

Script limitations

• The script only checks the first Discuss page of any group.
• To keep its information, the script uses local storage, which is not shared between browsers: if you read new posts with FF, and then switch to Chrome, it will still see those posts as new.
• To keep its information, the script uses local storage, which is not shared between computers: if you read new posts on one PC, and then switch to another, it will still see those posts as new.
• If a comment is removed, and a new comment is posted before the script could record the removed post, the new comment will not be counted (and similar for any of the other supported pages).
If you add a comment to a watched thread, and someone posts a comment before you press POST NOW, the script will miss that other person's post.

Known issues:

. When you're on a group's Discuss page, click the '+' icon to add the group, and then visit one of the threads, the script will consider all posts as new!
solved in v0.1.29
. new threads, that have no replies yet, are not reported as new solved in v0.2.1
. threads that return to the front page, have all there posts counted as new solved in v0.2.1
. when a post is removed, the script should record the changed number of replies solved in v0.2.3
. when the plus icon (or the minus icon) wraps to a new line, it no longer works!? this was/is a conflict with other scripts adding text to the top line (using innerHTML!)
. (some new) has no mark this thread as read icon solved in v0.2.5
. when reading a thread, the counter on top keeps showing the number of unread posts for that thread solved in v0.2.8
. if watching a particular thread, and its group also, mark this thread as read does not work on the thread watch v0.2.9
. removing a watch when there are new posts, removes only the envelope, not the compact 'x new' number

Update... For some reason, every time I come to Flickr, this script shows new posts in the few groups I selected. I go to the groups only to find no new posts. And even when there *are* new posts, the count is way off. (For instance, yesterday it showed 23 new posts in Flickr Ideas, when there had actually only been three new comments since my previous visit.)

I finally uninstalled it.

Are you the victim of this switching browsers, maybe?
If you read new posts with Chrome, and then switch to FF, the script will still see those posts as new.

That sounds like a possible bug. Will look into it.

That's what I thought at first... Since I do occasionally read a thread in one browser and then return to the same group in another. :-)

So I tried using just Firefox that day. After reading every new thread in a group, I had closed my browser and went to lunch. When I came back, the script said there were new posts in that group. When I went to the group, there were no new posts...

(Possibility? There actually *were* new posts, but admin deleted them? I just now thought of that...)

Are you sure it's this script doing this? The current stable version of the Admin tool contains this bug. It has been solved in v0.1.25b (available from the beta page).
If you only see this behavior in the Syndicate, it's the Admin tool.

Just got something similar: when opening some topic, the envelopes came up, showing 81 new posts in FlickrIdeas. Visiting the group's Discuss page revealled that there were only 3 new (and this time the envelope reported it correctly), but a thread that was previously not on the first page was on top, with 78 posts in total. 78+3=81!

Adding to the buglist.

It's the same vertical bar used elsewhere on Flickr (I'm trying to keep close to the original Flickr style). If you have an alternative, just let me know.

Our versions are close, but different indeed. Mine is 5.0.335.0 dev running on a 64-bit Linux.

Having looked it now reports that I haven't looked at any of the posts. I dismiss this from the discussion page and all is well until it reports more New posts and I go and look. Having looked, it again reports that I haven't looked at any of the posts. I dismiss again and around we go. I do wonder if this is because it is an excessively long thread 94,000 posts and rising?

Forget about Opera support.

The script runs fine. Or so it seems. I noticed the count was off for this group. I could not really pinpoint the cause.

So I removed the group from the watch list. Refreshed the page.
And it's back! The envelope for the group, with the count that is off, and the (x new) indications!

Looking in the script's preferences, I can see the group is no longer in the list of selected groups.

It surely has something to do with caching, but even when I go to, say, page 37, which I'm quite sure I haven't opened before, I can see the script at work for this group!

After clearing the cache (Preferences, History, ..), no change. Still there.

Concentrating on Firefox and Chrome from now on.

[edit] it seems that in Opera, the '-' icon on a page does not work; removing a group from the Preferences dialog does work!

For some reason, the newest version is always showing me my new posts in the groups I'm following.

Is it showing your own posts as new?

Wil C. Fry (formerly SaintSeminole) wrote
A few times, I thought "hey, that group is fairly active; there should be new posts there." And sure enough, there were many new posts and comments, but I wasn't notified via the script...

Now that the script uses the group's feed (if available) to determine if there are any new posts, it is dependent on the feed provided by Flickr. That feed is always a bit behind. But we're talking about seconds probably, minutes at worst.

Wil C. Fry (formerly SaintSeminole) wrote

Seems unlikely. I will try to use Google Chrome a bit more today, and see if I get similar behavior.

Some of you may have seen me active in the Help Forum. I was testing the newly added support for the Help Forums.

But I have way too many notification watches defined :)
Every Flickr page I opened, took too long to load, because the script checks for new posts for every item in the watch list. That's why I implemented (configurable) delays.
In the Preferences dialog you will find an overall delay between checks option, which defaults to the current behavior: no delay
For every type of supported item, you can define a separate delay.
important note about the use of delayed checking

v0.5.0:
. refresh delays
. support for the help forums

Enjoy!

No, I misspoke (mistyped). I should have said "isn't" always ...

Ignore that first sentence above and sorry for the confusion. :-)

I only noticed it because I had been browsing for a while (say an hour or so) and saw no new posts up there... When I would check the groups, there would be several new posts...

v0.5.1:
. support for the new photo page layout :)
. when the script checks new posts for a selected group, and it finds new posts for a selected thread, it will update the thread's envelope, overriding any 'check delay'
. support for sponsered groups
. minor bug fixes

"support for the new photo page layout"

You are amazing!

(Now let's just get our other script-writers to do the same... :-)

Note: I am very appreciative of all the people who've written these Flickr scripts over the years. My code-writing knowledge is limited to basic html and very basic CSS; otherwise I'd be dabbling in this too...

Without the dozen or so scripts that I'm using, Flickr would be much less useful to me. :-)

Great script for a missed function of Flickr ...as usual!

I test your script and it show me many news (old ) discussion after i put a pool (flickr Hack) in survey way....

Have you a solution to mark in a pool, all old threads "read" like with flickr Mail and start with a clean survey?

Alesa Dam says:

If you add a group pool, or group discussion page, to the watch-list, it should start 'clean'.

You can always click the '-' icon to remove the group, and click the '+' icon to add the group again. That's what I do on the Help Forum :)

Great script. Just one minor layout bug. On photopages the envelopes are top aligned next to the text (x+ new), for other pages they are middle aligned.
Tested in FireFox and Chrome.

Do you have a screenshot of this? For my pages (all the pages I visit on Flickr -- both groups, forums, photopages, etc.), the envelopes are in exactly the same place...

Interesting! (And thanks for the screenshot...)

I was merely curious (I know next-to-nothing about writing these scripts). But I'm not seeing that at all in Firefox or Chrome.... All mine are lined up evenly... Perhaps Alesa Dam can duplicate that... :-)

Alesa Dam says:

There is something strange about this.
If you hover an envelope, you'll see the background light up in blue (it's a html link after all). That background is nicely aligned with the text. The icon is up a couple of pixels.

With this update, the alignment still isn't perfect, but it should be better :-)

v0.5.6:
. improvement in allignment
. make sure the preferences dialog gets above the lightroom pane
. add group name to the title element of thread watches
. adds (x new) in the left column of a discussion thread
. new watch on a thread gets the same background color as its discussion group (if applicable)

And without the Ugly Flickr /Yahoo Logo (Thanks to AdBlock) it is fine !

Ps, just a little proposition :

Can you change the "55+new" by something more short , like "<55" or the number on the icon ?

I would like that too :)
This is how my notifications looked this morning:

A shorter notation, could probably reduce this to two lines.

Cool Update on 'mark all threads as read' on discussion page :
I haven't see before :
If we click on the First and alone thread's envelope at the top (Harg...my english !): all is marked Read .

In one word : Perfect...

Just for your information. On the photopage where the enveloppe is top aligned there isn't style="vertical-align: middle; " as attribute in the img-tag as it is on other pages.
When I add newPostsIcon.set('style', 'vertical-align: middle'); to your code it works for me.

As a moderator or admin of several groups, this script has really helped me save a ton of time.
With the notifications on top, I can see what groups have some action in the discussions and know where to go, instead of spending a long time hitting each group looking for new posts or digging through RSS feeds that are mixed in with my other feeds. (life is not all about Flickr).
So thanks for this one. Saves time and makes admin/moderation life a bit easier

I've noticed that gives me the same thing every time I reconnect to Flickr.

Sometimes, it's fixable. Simply click the minus button "-" to un-add that photostream. Then click the plus button "+" to re-add it.

(This always works for me when a group discussion returns false positives...)

If Firefox crashes, it won't store the updated values. Restarting Firefox, and signing in, will then show the old values. Is it something similar you're experiencing?
