Flickriver - new Flickr viewer and Greasemonkey script

view profile

iosart  Pro User  says:

Flickriver is a new web-app/site that offers a different approach to viewing Flickr photos.

Check it out here.

I'm cross-posting with the API group, because I have a Greasemonkey script, a bookmarklet and several additional 'hacks' that might also be relevant to this group. Hope it's ok :)

My API group post with more info is here.

I'd love to get everyone's feedback on this :)

This is great. I particularly like the 'contacts' section so that I can see my contact's photos in a column like that www.flickriver.com/photos/curiouskiwi/friends

@Brenda Anderson - thanks! I like being able to see *your* contact photos :) - I think Flickr should add this view too... Here're mine: www.flickriver.com/photos/iosart/friends/

@DRB - your flickriver page does look kinda empty (or filtered!) ;) flickriver.com/photos/ratbastard/. I need to look into ways of solving this...

@malanalars - thanks!

very interesting.
i like the inifitne scroll but i miss the functionality to turn it off.
i like the large contacts pictures and i love being able to see a contact's contacts by most recent.

i don't like the black background. i make many of my pictures specifically for a white background, they look bad on black.
and i hate that it is set to 'interesting' by default. that should be recent at all times, i think.

iosart  Pro User  says:

@mortimer - thanks! I'll see if I can somehow add descriptions (unobtrusively! :) )

@thethi, @Allyn Edmonds Photography, @brianwallace - thanks!

@.eti - turning off the infinite scroll - this is one of the main points of the site - so I'm not sure how this can be added - any ideas? optional white background - I agree, and I'll try to add this as an option. 'interesting' by default - I think there's a trade-off between visiting a photographer you already know (in which case 'recent' would make more sense) and one that you're discovering (in which case 'interesting' is more, well, interesting :) ). Because I think Flickriver is a bit more about discovery, I made 'interesting' default for most cases. Also - if it's an alternative viewer, it should be a bit different - no ? ;)

Thanks for your feedbacks - please keep them coming!

I am liking the functionality and I am using it a bit. Here is what I can think of:

1. for some reason, the recent contacts does not do the infinite scroll.
2. the "view" link from the Greasemonkey on a photo page should show the one photo in a Large or Original size -- a bit like the link from Bighugelabs. May be an option with the white background (not something that I would encourage).
3. the box to enter username and tags should be bigger for those of user not having 6 letter user names ;)
4. depending on the access via the API (for which I lack familiarity), it would be nice to get image statistics (as an option?), in terms of views, faves, etc. This is not a big deal, just something that could be useful.

@fernando - thanks!
1. recent contacts and infinite scroll - yep, unfortunately the Flickr API (flickr.photos.getContactsPublicPhotos call) doesn't allow getting more than 50 recent photos. I'll try to find another way...
2. single photo view - for images with 'large' size available - there's a link on the Flickriver photo page above the photo - 'view large' see here for an example. So, you can get to this view in 2 clicks from Flickr. Maybe this can be improved somehow. Optional white background - agreed.
3. larger entry boxes - yep, they are a bit small, aren't they? ;) I'll need to see how they can be made bigger, and still fit on the screen.
4. Image stats - interesting idea - I'll look into it.

Thanks again for your feedback!

I'd like to have a view of 1 to 3 columns depending on the width of my window. I have a bunch of greasemonkey scripts that convert thumbnail pages into larger views. 3 colums of 500 pixel images look very nice on a 1600x1200 display.

Larger thumbnails on group pages - greasemonkey for now: A hacked "High Res Flickr" greasemonkey script displaying a 3 row 500 pixel group pool display on a 1600x1200 monitor - 5 FAV Sky

I find the interestingness sorted groups particularly useful. I wonder why flickr does not provide this view. Now some greasemonkey hacker just has to add this option to the group pages.

losart;

Thanks for creating this. I just discovered it today and am using it frequently.

The space bar works nicely to move the pictures forward, but if I really do this for awhile I find myself longing for some automation like a slide show option.

Flickriver is great - it has quickly become one of my favorite ways of seeing stuff on flickr. Congratulations on a good idea well executed.

If I had my druthers, I, too, would try and find a way to get past the 50-picture limit for my contacts' pictures. It would be so nice to have that be somehow infinite. My contacts' pictures are the ones I most want to troll through!

iosart  Pro User  says:

@Andreas Helke: I'm thinking about creating a special 'large' stream view for people with high-res screens - with images 1024 pixels wide. Multi column would also work, although I personally prefer single column vertical arrangement... I definitely agree - 'interestingness by group' should be provided by Flickr, and also 'interestingness by user' which I think is very important.

@john w - thanks! I'll need to give the 'automation' option some thought

@ulugeyik - flickrleech looks interesting... I think someone can create a greasemonkey script to jump between flickriver, flickrleech and flickr :)

@efo - yeah, I agree - having more than 50 of my contacts photos would be great. I really hope Flickr add this to their API. Anyway, I'll try to think of something to solve this...

~ fernando  Pro User  says:

In regards to the "more info" comment above (including me), in looking at the first page option from flickr, I thought of the following: create a second column with the text info (title, plus description, faves, comments, etc.). I personally agree with the one column of photos, especially at that size, but by having the text on a second column, we can make the browser be wide enough to just show the images, or wide enough to show the info.

Of course, I am of the thought that it is good enough now, and any changes are really up to your standards. So, that is the spirit with the above feedback (or any feedback, for that matter).

mortimer?  Pro User  says:

The description of the photos could probably be as an overlay on the image, it would be pretty and trendy ;)

but then, as fernando [pixelstains] says, there is plenty of horizontal space, the 70/80 col is not very relevant when dealing with images and not text (I wonder why flickr never got that)
Posted 14 months ago. ( permalink )

view photostream

~ fernando  Pro User  says:

ah the overlay... fad sexiness indeed. I find it that it acts peculiarly on the flickr slideshow, which otherwise is nice, but the overlay is sometimes in the middle, and sometimes not, of the image. I suspect it has to do with the available largest image size. However, I think an infinite scroll with the text on the side (perhaps doing a mouse over the word "detail" on the right column?) is the new black, I mean, sexy :)

clickykbd  Pro User  says:

The limits on it's "infiniteness" seems to be somewhat arbitrary. I get 50 for my contacts recent photos, and random large numbers (but not a complete set) for my favorites, a public-tag, etc etc.

Limiting at some point intentionally?

PS - love it so far.

Feature request. Option to authenticate so that we can add favorites in line as we browse (flickr.favorites.add), ideally maybe even view/leave comments without loading flickr page. This would be a boon to my ability to stay caught-up and active on my contacts stream.

iosart  Pro User  says:

@mortimer, @fernando - great ideas, guys. I wanted to play around to see what works better and discovered an additional limitation with Flickr API - it looks like I cannot get the descriptions of all photos in one request - this will require an additional separate request for each photo... so, if I want to show a description for any particular photo, I'll need to perform another call to the server to fetch its info - which will result in a delay... also, this doesn't allow showing descriptions for all photos... I'll need to see how this can be solved, and if we want to get into this given these complications :)

@clickykbd - yep, there's a currently a limit of 50 for contacts view due to Flickr API limitation. All other views should show all the publicly accessible/visible photos. Authenticating+supporting favorites - great idea, although this would complicate things a bit implementation-wise. I really need to create a 'wish-list' with all the feature requests :)

Yeah I figured out where the 50 limit came from. Unfortunate. Too bad that method doesn't also accept a datetime, allowing you to step backwards through the stream, or even a page/perpage as flickr uses so many other places.

As I mentioned above, adding photo descriptions to the "river view" might be not simple, but in the meantime I added the photo description to the 'single photo' view - here's an example

Thanks a lot, losart, for making this app—it's great.

If you don't mind, I'd like to make another suggestion: I love the keyboard shortcuts, and think it would be very useful to have a key that opens the original photo page, like how 'v' opens the original post in Google Reader.

I added a 'badge creator' to Flickriver - it allows generating dynamic auto-updating Flickriver badges for your personal or group profile, or any webpage.

Features:
• User badges - interesting, recent, favorite, contacts, by tag and by set
• Group badges - most interesting or recent photos
• Global Tag badges - photos having a specific global tag
• 'Shuffle mode' to make the badges more dynamic
• 4 templates to choose from
• Customizable background and text color

Check it out here and let me know what you think :)

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to let you know that I've done some infrastructure work for making Flickriver pages load even faster and be more responsive, to accommodate the site's growing popularity. More details (warning - technical stuff! :-) ) are on my blog

Let me know if Flickriver indeed feels faster for you or if you see any issues.

Cheers,

An update:

There are some Flickr photos that are not publicly visible - either restricted photos (nudes etc.) or 'friends/family/private' photos. Up until now, you couldn't see such photos on Flickriver.

Now, you can login to Flickriver (= allow it to access your Flickr photos) to see non-public photos visible to your account on Flickr.

Just hit 'login' in the top-right corner on Flickriver

Enjoy! :)

another small addition - in 'contacts' view, you can now choose whether to see 1 or 5 photos per contact. unfortunately, there's still a 50 photos limit for this view, but if you choose to display 1 photo per contact, you'll potentially see more different contacts.

Flickriver is absolutely stunning :) Would it be possible to use it to view a private set through a guest pass?
I mean, I'd like to send a flickriver URL based on a set guest pass in order to show to specific people a not public set in Flickriver, is this possible?

I believe Flickr doesn't expose guest pass functionality via its API, and without it, it would be difficult to implement this on flickriver. I'll look into this some more, though...

Wow. I too just discovered the awesomeness of flickriver. I especially love the bookmarklet. It makes it so easy to use.

Thank you so much for making it available to the World, iosart!

I too have a feature request: You currently can view a user's photos by interestingness (/photos/username/popular-interesting). How about by views? (photos/username/popular-views)

Because: some otherwise attention-getting photos may not have a high interestingness score if people are reluctant to favorite or comment on them. For example, on some photo streams I notice photos that have EXTREMELY high view counts (multiple thousands) but absolutely no comments or favorites. Something is going on there, and I am fascinated to see which photos are getting this sort of attention.

@iosart: Thank you a lot! :) Flickriver is a great way to show galleries, I think that the thumbnails in flickr galleries are quite limiting, it would be great to be able to use it also on galleries without having to make the gallery public

@zebruh - thanks, that's a great idea, although I'm quite sure Flickr API doesn't allow sorting by views (only by dates, interestingness), so it might be very difficult to implement this in flickriver. I'll look into this and see what I can do

@xNstAbLe - yep, totally agree, that would definitely be great. not sure whether it would be possible to add guestpass functionality to flickriver, but for now, you can see non-public galleries with flickriver, if you have access to these galleries on flickr and login to flickriver.

A new feature on Flickriver - view any user or group photos in random order. You can return to a 'random' flickriver view of a certain user or group many times and you'll always see photos in different order. This allows discovering less known or less recent photos you might otherwise never get to.

A few examples:
