Thanks for the kind words everyone!
-SpH- - What version of GM are you using? And do you have any other GM scripts that could be interfering?
I tested with 2.0.0.4 at work and it seemed to work fine.

(I have quite a large screen).

Hey,
Just updated the script, it should now display a link to turn the lights out on the "all sizes" page as well.
If you could test it in your browser and let me know how it goes, that would be great!

Just updated the script (see link in first post to the userscripts.com page) to make the initial transparent image slightly lighter. This can also be changed, check out the download page for details.
I am going to make an option to remove the transparent stage all together, might have to make a second release that just goes straight to black. Will look into it tonight.

Awesome work!
Works perfectly for me in Firefox but Opera 9.21 doesn't recognize it. It only appears on the All Sizes pages occasionally, but never shows up as a button or anything.

On the photo page, the script changes the z-index (or the position) of the image, so after using it, the add to set, send to group menus, etc.. appear UNDER the photo.

@MaxChu - It's a great photo mate, and a nice one to test this out on.
@really_really_super - not sure what's happening there, I can test it on the latest version of Opera tonight at home.
@mortimer? - that nasty bug should be fixed. Go ahead and grab the latest version from userscripts.org/scripts/show/9589

Sorry to be thick and a pain in the arse newbie, but how do I go about installing the script? I have the code from your page but where do I put it and what do I do it with it? Speak slowly for I am an idiot.
Thanks :)

..PhotoPixel..: In order for us to answer your question you need to tell us which browser you're using. Here is a page describing how to install scripts in IE, Opera, and Firefox.

This is nice! How about a more gradual fade to black, rather than the drastic jump, would that be difficult to add? ala moo.tools or scriptaculous?

I hate to bring this up, but this is overtyly and blatently a violation of the Adobe Photoshop copyright. The author even admits that it is a feature of Photoshop. I'm all for good freeware and I'm a big fan of all these GM scripts, but the out and out theft of a copyrighted product leaves one open for prosecution. So beware those of you who downloaded it...you are also subject to prosecution.

@grahamsj3 - IANAL, but I'm not as confident as you that anything here is a violation of copyright, except for perhaps using the term "Lights Out". That said, it could be agrued in most places that "Lights Out" is a common enough term to not allow it to be trademarked. And I find it hard to believe that Adobe own a patent on displaying an image on a semi-transparent, and then a fully black background.
Anyway, if you want to be specific, the way it performs here is quite different to the way in which it performs in the Adobe application - have you tested both so that you can compare?
If Adobe (or Flickr) want me to remove references to Lightroom - then simply PM me and considder it done. If anyone else has a better legal opinion than myself, post here so that we can discuss.
@jm3 - i could defiantely make that work in Firefox for you, but not sure about other browsers. Let me see what I can do.

OK, so here is a modified version of the script to add a gradual fade to black. This is absolutely un-tested in anything other than Firefox, although I will check out other browsers tomorrow at some stage when I have some time (it's kinda late here in Australia).
Lets call this the Flickr "Dimmer Switch":
Available for testing from: seshblog.com/flickr/dimmerswitch.user.js
It still pauses at approximately 70% opacity and waits for a second click to go to full black. A third click resets everything.
Please post any bugs/comments/suggestions/legal threats in this thread.

I don't see how this could be a copyright infrigement. "Light Out" is a very wide term and probably not able to be registered.
The code is not a copy paste of Adobe code and I am sure that sesh00 did all of it by himself.
Then, the concept cannot be copyrighted, at most it could be patented, in some countries, but I doubt that Adobe would easily get a patent on the dark colours. It's sure they didn't invent transparency, black and grey. Neither did they invent light tables and light intensity...
What's your point exactly grahamsj3??

sesh00, I like Lights Out and Dimmer. For the latter, there is no point in pausing at 70% opaque. I would rather it goes black all the way, the gradual fade serves it purpose already.

Thanks for the compliments.
@djsosumi: Yeah, Flickr changed the code used to display the top menu a while ago, and I haven't bothered working out what is causing it. I actually noticed that it was causing problems with one of the Flickr pages using a lightbox style thing as well.
I'm at work atm, but I'll have a look tonight if I get a chance and fix it for you.
Cheers,
Brenton
