GM Script: AllSizes v2.0.3

view profile

premasagar says:

UPDATE: 4th October, 2012
AllSizes is no longer being maintained. See this comment in the thread.

=========

UPDATE: 14th August, 2010

AllSizes has been updated to work with Flickr's new photo page menu. The information at the top of this thread is currently out-of date.

See this comment for details on upgrading to AllSizes v2:
www.flickr.com/groups/flickrhacks/discuss/721575943037986...

=====

GM Script: AllSizes+ (by premasagar)

To use this script:
1. Install the Firefox browser and fire it up
2. Install Greasemonkey and restart the browser
3. Install AllSizes+
4. Go to a photo page and click the "All Sizes" button

Summary
AllSizes+ gives you quick access to the different sizes available for a photo on Flickr. It produces better HTML code for posting photos on to blogs and Flickr discussion threads, lets you quickly view and download images, and does a few other things too.

Simply install the script and click the AllSizes button on any photopage. Further documentation and settings are available in the pop-up window that appears.

Features
• Quickly choose between any of the available sizes
• Better HTML to post photos on blogs and Flickr discussion threads
• Appends '(by *Username*)' to the title and alt attributes
• Gives 'Untitled' for untitled photos
• Download images, copy the code to your clipboard, view the image
• BB Code for posting photos on forums and bulletin boards
• Video still images can be accessed as if they were photos
• Shortcut keys for quick actions
• Default settings can be modified
• Automatically checks for updates

Respecting Copyright
Please respect the copyright attributed to a photo. You should only re-post a photo if the license permits it or if the owner has given you specific permission. Karma is as karma does...

The AllSizes Button
Some users have their Flickr account set to restrict downloads on their photos. This is usually done as a deterrent against people misusing their photos. By default, Flickr will not show the AllSizes button on such user's photos.

There are many reasons why people may legitimately want to use the AllSizes button. For example, those who want to see the details present in a large-size image, or those who want to download images for their personal, offline use, or those who want to talk about photos in Flickr discussion groups and use the HTML code to post the relevant photo.

The script will add the AllSizes button to a photo if it is not already present, but it will only show those image sizes that are already viewable on the Flickr website. In other words, it will not show the Original size image for that photo.

(The script used to always give access to the Original size. Some people felt that this was a good thing, others not. Either way, Flickr has since changed the system so that it is now impossible to access the Original size if the owner has chosen to hide it. So that solved that debate...)

You will always be able to use the script for your own photos (if you are logged in), regardless of your privacy settings.

Uninstalling
To uninstall a Greasemonkey script from your browser, go to the Tools menu, select Greasemonkey, then Manage User Scripts, highlight the script and click Uninstall.

The HTML seems to have changed. What seems to be the case is that permissions are now functional to the button, when using this applet.

So if you don't have permissions, the non-screen sizes are once again barred to you.

Alrighty folks.
It's now fixed to work with Flickr's new HTML. (Download)
I also squashed another couple of minor bugs that you may or may not have noticed.

Perhaps this is a good moment to share a couple of statistics with you ;)
...
Stat #1 - The number of unique Flickr users who've installed AllSizes+ over the last 6 months: approx 6000
Stat #2 - The number of times the script has been used over the last 6 months: approx 1 million
Stat #3 - Number of people who have made a donation to support script development: 0 (zero, nada, zilch)
(there's a Donate button in the "About" section of the pop-up)

Erm... what to say? Of course, the script is offered for free. It's fun to develop it. There's no obligation. So, by all means, enjoy...

But... if you do decide to donate, it'd fantastic for many reasons:
1. I'm more likely to prioritise development time within my busy schedule of family and business.
2. The script will be updated quicker, for any future changes to the Flickr site.
3. New features will be introduced to make the script better (there are a couple of things I've been aching to do for ages, but I haven't yet made time for them).
4. I'll know that you care (you do, don't you?).
5. You'll feel happy to help a worthwhile project (you want to feel happy, right?).
6. I'll be more likely to want to create excellent new scripts for you lovely people.

So there you go. I haven't mentioned it before, so I thought I'd let you know. Enjoy the script.

I'm a bit wary of donating online - how secure is it? Do you take PayPal? I have used and enjoyed the scripts you produce. If everyone gave a little I guess it would make life easier and you would feel it was worthwhile.

Edit: Also - is this a donation for all the Grease Monkey scripts or just this one?

@Lynn - Hi Lynn. Yes, the donations are done through PayPal, so it should be as secure as can be. (You don't specifically need a PayPal account though).
I had in mind this being just for the AllSizes+ script, but it's entirely up to you. Sure, if everyone of 6000 people chipped in, it'd be fantastic.

This doesn't seem to work in Google Chrome/Greasemetal. I don't get any errors, but when I click on the All Sizes button it just goes to the standard flickr all sizes screen, same as it always did. Double-clicking does the same as single-clicking.

premasagar says:

@RichSPK - Ah, that would be great. But, alas, Greasemetal doesn't yet support all the Greasemonkey API methods. See the Greasemetal developer's notes about the "Possibility of Supporting other GM_* Functions and Security Implications" and the comments thread on that post.

There has also been a request to port the script to Opera and to Greasekit on Safari. I reckon that any solution working on Opera, Safari or Chrome will also work in the others. One day, I'd like to rewrite the script from scratch, in a way that will make it work cross-platform - but I couldn't really say when.

Hi @Todd, and all those following the development of AllSizes+.

Yes, the script is absolutely still being maintained. I actually have quite a big overhaul planned, where I want to make the script work in all browsers, and not just Firefox - and also not just with Greasemonkey, but as a browser "bookmarklet". As @karindalziel and others have requested, I also want to implement a way to create code templates , rather than the one fixed HTML code block.

But before that big release, I'm having to fix any issues with the current version.

@Todd, I don't find any problems with the script. Do you get this error on all photo pages, or just some of them? If it's just some of them, can you post me a url to an example page?

Do you still get the problem if you uninstall and reinstall the script? Do you get this problem if you install the script on a different computer?

Thanks,
Prem

I know it was a while ago when Saint.Seminole posted problems with not being able to see larger than medium on their own pictures, and I've noticed that I'm having that problem too. I'm logged into Flickr, I've tried reinstalling Firefox (3.6), Greasemonkey, and the AllSizes+ script, and I've tried turning off all other scripts in case there was a conflict. Once it finishes loading on my own pages I'm left being able to only see up to medium size, so if I want to view anything else I have to use the double click trick. Not a huge deal since most of the time I use small/medium size for posting, slightly annoying, but figured I should chime in anyway. Thanks for all the hard work preasagar. This is probably my most used script.

That shouldn't have anything to do with this script. This script only allows access to the original size if the photo's owner has allowed access. If you have gone here and set it to "only you" then this script shouldn't allow access beyond that. (For instance, I just went to one of your photos and did *not* see the original size...)

Note: If any of your images are licensed with the Creative Commons licensing, then the original size might still be available.

Note2: the "large" isn't the same as the original. Flickr provides access to the "large" size for the slideshow and other API applications.

That's possible... Just in case, try opening Flickr in another browser (one that's never signed in to your account) and try it.

(I always keep one browser, usually Opera, not signed in to anything, so I can test stuff like that. :-)

I finally think I figured out what the problem was on mine (at least I think so since I've got it working now). melser's problem with cookies made me think something like that might be it. I went into Firefox's settings and checked the box for "Accept 3rd Party Cookies" now that it is checked, it works for me again. Now whether or not that's something I want, I'll have to think about, but I like having it work again.

premasagar says:

Hi all,
Sorry, I've been a little absent on Flickr of late and missed your messages about the script. Thanks for getting on with it in my absence.

It seems to me that the new Flickr photo page finally makes it possible to grab the HTML for a photo in a convenient way, the lack of which first motivated me to write the AllSizes+ script four years ago.

So the question I'd like to ask is, is there a need for the AllSizes+ script? Or rather, what is the need for the script? What functionality does Flickr not offer you?

Off the top of my head, Flickr doesn't offer you:

1) One-click access (but it's only two clicks, and it's a tidier interface without all those extra buttons).

2) access to the HTML for the large size on all photos (e.g. the HTML isn't offered on this photo: www.flickr.com/photos/helle-belle/4738453132/ ).

3) Access to download all the photos that you anyway have access to view.

4) BB Code (I rarely use it myself, but I know a lot of people do)

5) The ability to specify an HTML template (or BB Code or other markup), so that the photo's details are formatted how you want it - e.g. including the photo description or other details. AllSizes+ doesn't yet support this, but it was always top of my list for when I next extend the code.

6) History of photos that you want to grab the HTML from. This was an idea I was toying with - having a browsing session, and being able to review an arbitrary set of photos, to grab their HTML or download them all in one go.

Are these important, or not so much? Is there anything else that you'd like to see?

By the way, thank you to those of you who have made small donations for the script over the past months and years. I know I haven't individually thanked you, but I do very much appreciate you giving back to the project.

Cheers,
Prem

From all the posts in the forum about the new photo layout, the bb code is apparently of huge importance to some people (though I don't use it myself).

Hi Premasagar,

what I would love to have is direct links to the URLs of all sizes of the images - what Photo Page Enhancer used to do. So in the sidebar click 'original' and you get purely the _o version of the picture without any buttons or whatever. If I need to grab the URL I can right click and hit 'copy linkl location'.

That way we would also get around the annoying spaceball thingy that's on some pictures now, which blocks Firefox's zoom function.

nargalzius says:

For all its worth, I find this script very useful. Because I tend to modify it.

For example:

1. I modified the "picture mode" to open in a new window - so I can view/compare the different sizes faster since they'll be open in three separate tabs.

2. I modified the BB code to just display the absolute path of the image size I want.

3. I modified the html code to automatically generate a completely formatted html snippet which I often use for my blog entires. (e.g. I always use a single size for the thumbnail, but want the destination link to be dependent on the size I choose)

Simply put, the potential of "customizing" this script makes it a very invaluable tool. All this would've been much longer to manage/create if I only used Flickr's official, unmodifiable, approach.

So if possible, please update the script for the new layout. I tried messing with the id detection of the DOM elements, but I seem to keep on breaking it beyond use :(

Just be careful with that part, since Flickr requires a linkback to the photopage... They actually do occasionally cut off certain forums or websites that don't provide the required linkback...

Now onto the new photo pages and whether something like allsizes+ is still needed. Yes, it is; for one thing the lack of BBCode (forum code) support. I would also agree about the customisability aspect.

I enjoy posting my images with a link back to the original, it has been very helpful in the last year or so of use, and now without it I'm wasting time copying image urls and writing the code myself :(

I've been running into a lot of photographers that have "Share This" disabled, even when their work is licensed under Creative Commons!

For that reason alone I'd love to have this script operational on the new layout again. It sure would be easier than jumping back and forth between the old and new layout.

For the impatient: this script adds two text fields in the right column of a photo page:
. the HTML code for posting medium sized photos in discussions
. the BB-code for posting in BBs

It's nothing like the AllSizes+ script, but it could be a temporary solution for some of you. It's available from userscripts.org/scripts/show/81674

Hi guys,
Thank you for your enthusiasm! It's great to hear feedback like that. The code for version 2 is coming along well (albeit in bits and pieces, in between other commitments).

I'm starting from scratch again, since so much has changed in the new Flickr interface and much of the original problem has now been solved by Flickr. But it makes a number of improvements to the usability and functionality of the interface.

I'm keeping only those features that feel truly useful. It's a lot more subtle and integrated into the website than the original script was - almost to the point that you wouldn't notice it was there until you used Flickr without it. The next release will have the most critical features, but I plan to add more later on.

Oh, and I'm dropping the "+". So now it's just "AllSizes". I always thought the "+" was a bit clunky - almost humorous, but still clunky.

I'm planning to send the new script in advance to all the kind folks who have given a donation to the project at some point in its lifetime. If you have enjoyed using AllSizes, please consider contributing, on its new Pledgie page: pledgie.com/campaigns/12514

I'll update this thread once it's all ready.

Best wishes,
Prem

[Edit: Oh, and it now works in Chrome and Opera as well as Firefox. I haven't yet tested it, but it should work in Safari as well].

MAJOR UPGRADE: AllSizes v2

Hi all,
AllSizes v2 is now ready for use. Get it while its hot!

1) Uninstall any previous versions of the AllSizes script (via Greasemonkey's "Manage User Scripts" menu; you should check the box that says "Also uninstall associated preferences").

2) Install the latest version from:
userscripts.org/scripts/source/6178.user.js

(If you're a userscripts.org fan, its page is at userscripts.org/scripts/show/6178).

--

SO WHAT DOES IT DO?
The script has been re-written from scratch to work with Flickr's new photo page design. It works cross-browser, gives you less clutter and integrates better into the Flickr interface.

AllSizes adds its functionality to the photo page's new "Share this" menu:

The "Grab the HTML" menu option is now selected by default, instead of "Share this photo".

A "Grab the image" menu option is added, giving access to the image URL, as well as links to view and download the different available sizes.

BBCode is added to the embed code options. Yay! Flickr now does this by default. I've removed my BBCode converter, but kept some simple enhancements like the heading "Grab the BBCode" when that option is selected.

All the different ways that you use the "Share this" menu are remembered. For example, if you tend to use the "Blog it" option a lot, then that is the option that will open next time you open the menu. Or if you're a BBCode user, then you won't have to click "BBCode" next time - it'll be already be selected for you. Or if you like "Large" images instead of "Medium" images, then Large images will be selected next time around. All this is remembered, saving you from making repeated clicks to get the job done.

The "Share this" button is always available. For example, if a Creative Commons photo page doesn't display the HTML code you need to share it, or if you want to post a photo into a Flickr group discussion that doesn't already display the code, well, now you can.

It now works cross-browser, so as well as Firefox & Greasemonkey, it'll work natively in Google Chrome and Opera. It should also work in Safari + GreaseKit, and perhaps even in Internet Explorer + GreasemonkeyForIE, but I haven't yet tested those (if you do, please let me know).

As ever, the script checks for new updates, and lets you know when they are ready to be installed.

The image should already be visible, since you're on the photopage when you click "share this" to get the All Sizes code. At least it works that way for me...

Thank you, it enables some long waited features with the new design. But it would be better if the largest possible image size would be avalaible within just one mouse click from the photo page.

This is what the new script does. :-)

Once you select "original," then it's "original" from then on. One click ("share this") and then copy-and-paste.

@Wil - thank you. Very glad you like it.

@Sweet_Ken - I guess you mean that you'd like the "view image" link in the "Grab the image" menu option to open images in the same browser tab? That would be possible. If it was to be set up to open the image in the same tab, then you'd still be able to right-click and select "open in new tab", as with any link in a browser. But I was thinking that, in most cases, you want to quickly open the image in a new tab to check its size, then close the tab and grab the HTML in the original tab - rather than opening the image in the same tab and having to click the back button and have the photo page reload. But perhaps your workflow is a bit different to mine - how do you like to use it?

What do others think - same tab or different tab? I could make a "Settings" panel, but I want to keep things simple, and to make the default behaviour the most intuitive one.

Maybe it's possible "On click" and have the link copied automatically without right click?

If you can find a solution - like FlickrButtonsOnSide does - but with a better integration - to move all this ugly Bar on the right side it'll be very , very interesting :
i don't like to have it at this place...
I prefer to have just the shot under the title (with this script : TitleOnTop , of course because Flickr don' heard nothing about our complain...)

I think a configuration panel shall be a solution....

@*BZd*, @Wil, @decembre - thanks for the feedback on the ease of copying and pasting the code.

At the moment it's: 1) Click the "Share this" button, 2) Click the embed code (assuming you already have "Grab the HTML" and the required size selected), 3) Copy the code (e.g. press "CTRL" + "C", or right-click and "Copy").

So, how could we reduce this further? An easy thing for me to do would be to have the embed code already selected when you open the menu, so then it'd be just "CTRL" + "C" to copy and you miss out step 2).

I could have the code automatically copied to the clipboard when you open the menu (then you miss out steps 2 and 3). But implementing this kind of thing reliably, cross-browser is a real pain. Possible, though.

Another option would be to add to Flickr's keyboard shortcuts. At the moment, near the bottom of a photo page, there are keyboard shortcuts for navigation. We could add a "c" for copy, or an "m" to open the menu, "v" for view, or "d" for download. Again, a bit tricky to implement well, but possible.

@decembre - I think I want to avoid moving the menu bar around. I'll leave that for other scripts. With AllSizes, I'd like to simply add to the ways that you can access a photo, integrating cleanly into the current design, rather than altering the page layout.

@*Bundy* - you're very welcome.

I just published v2.0.2. It now auto-selects the embed code when you first open the Share menu, and when you change the image size. This allows you to simply click the "Share this" button and then press "CTRL" + "C" to copy the embed code.

I also fixed a couple of bugs, e.g. one where BBCode wasn't always being restored.

@CY - yes, that would be possible as part of a "custom embed code" option that I'd like to implement. I don't have any fixed date for working on that, at the moment.

@*BZd* - I'm not sure I understand what you mean by "it was able to get once a large". Can you tell me exactly what you did and what you saw. What browser and browser version are you using, what operating system, and can you give me the URL of a public photo page that you have this problem on?

Note that when a photo's original is smallish, and the photo owner does not have a Pro account, then the largest size you will have access to will by the Medium size. I'm not sure if that's the reason you're seeing this behaviour though.

winXP & Firefox 3.6.8.
for example this: www.flickr.com/photos/28656602@N05/4838839178/
The script offers me 1024*505, but it opens the 500*247. Only once. If I refresh the photo page, or open another photo page, the "Copy and paste the image URL:" field will be empty and I can't click on the "view image" or "download" links. I have to restart the browser to have another try.
Yesterday, with the previous version it was perfect and I didn't update any other gm scripts, add-ons, etc since then, just Allsizes v2.0.1. to 2.0.2.
