GM Script: Follow Comments you've made

view profile

mortimer?  Pro User  says:

Hello,

This is a script to implement features that have been already asked a few time all around the flickr community: have a better control over the view of the "Comments You've made" page to be able to filter to see only certain types of comments.

The current features allow you to see directly 10 pages of comments filter the comments displayed to show only:
- comments on photos by your contacts/friends/family
- comments that has not been followed by more that 10 comments (so you still see your original comment).

Mark & The Zebra  Pro User  says:

You can change the number of pages of comments parsed by changing the line:
var MAX_NUMBER_PAGE = 10;
in the file.

How do you do that?
Posted 68 months ago. (permalink)

view photostream

mortimer?  Pro User  says:

Ok, you have to go to the menu Tools, then "Manage User Scripts", now select this script and click the edit... button.

This will open a text editor or prompt you for a text editor to open the file.
When the file is open, find the line at the beginning of the file with this MAX_NUMBER_PAGE = 10;
Experiment with different (lower) values, 5 works fine for me too, but it really depends on how much comments you post and how much reply to these there is, etc...

I just realeased a version 0.4 that tells when it's unable to read on page of comments when there is faulty html in one of the comments on that page.

I changed it from 10 to 4, it still hangs up at the two little Flickr-balls rotating. Loaded the page, cleared error box, and hit refresh on the page with nothing else open.

I get this one a lot if I click to load less than 10 replies, or click contacts only, friends, family, ignored.. it gives this error up in the box:

Error:
match has no properties
Source File:
Line: 323

I also got this error, but they're just popping up in the error box as it tries to cycle up I guess. Another popped up in the box as I type this up.

Error:
document.getElementsByTagName("P")[0].childNodes[1].childNodes[1] has no properties
Source File:
Line: 335
Source Code:
335

I'm using the latest FireFox and latest GreaseMonkey. Just installed both new again. Just updated the FollowComments script off the UserScripts.org site too.

It's just hanging there, no errors on the actual Flickr page though.

userscript is quite "painful" to use, so I don't always update the script there, you should get it from its original place to get the latest version.

Anyway, I added a safeguard where this error occured, I hope it will be sufficient (I don't really know why this would happen), get verion 0.5 (from userscript or my website) and tell me if it persists.

The second error is not linked to this greasemonkey script but sure sounds like a greasemonkey script error ;)

okay, this week I am having big problems with this script.... it won't do comments you made anymore. and if you need to copy and paste an icon it won't put the icon on the box, just the code. I have tried this in a couple of groups.... Someone else complained also, and I told them if they have this script that might be the problem.

I can't live without comments you made tool

maybe that is 2 different scripts but when I disable the follow comments script the icons work again.

Believe me I have made so many comments that every day I have pages, so that isn't the issue either

I have a big problem too, since 3 or 4 days, with this "follow comments" script.
It doesn't work anymore, each time, it gives me an empty page with the
"PAGES IGNORED": 01, 02, 03, etc... up to the end so in fact all pages are ignored!!!!

I don't get it. I'm on Firefox 2.01 (Mac) and the script is v.0.5.
It worked perfect before, and just like that, it stopped working!

Any idea someone, maybe?

Thanks in advance!

That's exactly what I said in my last message. Reinstall this script:

I forgot to change the version number but it's a whole new script with its own new way of fetching the comments. And it seems to correct the problem with the old version.

Also, I made over 30 comments in the last 2 days and only 9 are showing up. It seems to be missing tons and tons of my comments that I want to follow. I didn't exclude any of them.
Posted 65 months ago. (permalink)

view photostream

mortimer?  Pro User  says:

I am going to look into that

The way of processing the comments has changed and is now only fetching the last 10 photos where there has been new activity. I do realize that's quite small, I have to change that.

You can already do it manually and go up to 50 by editing the script (open GM script management and click edit on the script) and changing:
var PER_PAGE = 10;

I'll try to make it so that it can fetch more that 50...

mortimer?  Pro User  says:

Ok, I changed the script on the server, so you can update it and it will get 50 photos...

BUT... with 50 photos, the script is a bit lost when it has to display the buddy icon, I know it, but I don't have time to fix it yet. The rest (the core feature) of the script works fine though.

Maybe my problem is the same as Kathy~. I just installed this one and I'm testing it out and there are only 8 comments. There aren't any page numbers at the bottom for me to click and see the other comments I've made. So is this what it's supposed to do? I'm a simpleton as well and I don't understand if it's working right or not. Thanks.

why is it that no matter what I do.. my comments I follow is only 1 PAGE long.... I have tried everything to see multiple pages of comments but for some reason even if I comment on 40 photos I still get 1 page of comments. PLEASE HELP... I love the script but its not working for me

Help me FIX this
Posted 64 months ago. (permalink)

view photostream

mortimer?  Pro User  says:

This script does only display one page, it removes the pagination and this is normal.

Currently (I have to change the code a bit to get more and can't find time), on that unique page, it will get the latest 50 photos were a new message was posted and if they match the selected criterion display them.

So you shouldn't worry if you only see one page with a limited number of comments on it, it means that that's the only photos, in the 50 latest updated (I'll change the script to augment that limit) that match the display options.
Posted 64 months ago. (permalink)

view photostream

Chatdurouge says:

Ok, I re-enabled it to test it again. I went through the page of 50 comments and ignored about 40 of them. Then when I went to reload it to get more comments to ignore...I got only 10 on my page and then this message...

This page cannot be updated more than once an hour due to restrictions from Flickr service. Next update will be possible after: 4 minute(s)

Umm..what does that mean?

harry harris  Pro User  says:

I think what mortimer? is saying is that it only gets the last 50 commented photos, then processes the ignores or whatever. So you will always be pulling from the last 50 comments whether ignored or not.. if you ignored all 50 you would get nothing (until a different pic was commented by someone and made it into the top 50).

Shemer says:

I have a question... The part I really like about this script is that I can mark to ignore certain photos - that's absolutely perfect. The rest I can manage on my own. Is there any way to have only that option on the script? If you can help me with that I'd really appreciate it. Thank you so much!
Posted 64 months ago. (permalink)

view photostream

mortimer?  Pro User  says:

harry harris That's exactly it. In addition, there is a limit in Flickr API that I don't have the right to poll more than once an hour the server to get these 50 comments.
I'll change the script when I find time to be able to get more than 50 comments at a time (and fix that icons bug). But right now, I have too much work.

What do you mean by "the rest" Shemer?
Posted 64 months ago. (permalink)

view photostream

Shemer says:

Thanks for the answer. "The rest" is filtering according to contacts, from last login, with no more than 10 comments after yours, etc. - all the other options available in the script.

Ok, here's the deal: this is one of the most valuable scripts out there in my opinion (and thank you so much for that!). You said that you want to improve it (the last 50 issue), but have no time, so I thought if there might be a simple option, that maybe even we (dumb layman) can change, so that we still have this feature, the most crucial one I think.

Am I being clear now? Not sure... =)
Posted 64 months ago. (permalink)

view photostream

mortimer?  Pro User  says:

Ha, ok, I get it...

I don't really want to get too technical because it's gone be boring, all these filtering options are already implemented and it's not what is blocking me.

The script works likes that:
- it fetches the updates information from flickr
- it constructs a table from that
- then it can filter on that table.

Flickr serves me the updates information by pages of 50 (and don't want me to do that more than once an hour). So currently, I fill the table with the first page.
Fetching more pages is what I should do, and is not sooo difficult, but requires more than 2 lines of code in the script.
However, fetching more than 50 messages won't change how the filtering options work, so it won't ease anything to do a version without ;)

I hope this is clear, I'll really try to find five minutes to at least fix the 50 limit.

mortimer?  Pro User  says:

Ok, if I never finish my PhD, it will be your fault :-P

I updated the script to fetch more than one page. It's now configured to fetch 150 photos with updates. You can change that by editing the script and changing:
var FETCH_PHOTOS = 150;
to something else.

I haven't fixed the buddy icon bit, not the number of message before yours almost always showing 11... but you can live without that :D

Several times over the past week or two, on an intermittent basis, the first page of comments start with those "1 week old".

When I refresh, I (usually) get the most recent comments (an hour old, for example). An added inconvenience with "refresh" is that I, of course, hit the "one hour server refresh limit".

Is this glitch of showing comments beginning with one week old a flickr thing? -- unique to me? ... or ?

Shame. It was very useful (even more so having moved to a Core2 Duo machine - it used to have that terribly long delay while it thought about the world). I might try reinstalling it and see if it's happier.

Pixel Wrangler, Phojux and everyone else, I am very sorry. I am getting to the end of my Ph.D. thesis and have no more time to get into the scripts and follow Flickr modification. This is a very complex hack and would require some time to get it to work properly.

The code is GPL and everyone can help me make it better if you feel like trying, the code is shared on a repository, just contact me by flickr mail if you would like an access.

Perhaps you could all petition Flickr so they get me on their staff next year so I have the funding to implement these highly required features (ROFL)

Go Figure!

As of today, this script is working perfectly -- as it used to ... no more "beginning with comments left "1 week ago".

There's a very long "back story" (that I just edited out ;-) about how I "stumbled" on to this... I've been experiencing some very weird intermittent scrolling spasms with Firefox ... and in trying to isolate that problem I disabled Greasemonkey ... and did a bunch of other things (still don't have an "answer" to the scrolling spasms).

In any event ... for those of you who have also experienced the same problem with the Follow Comments you've made script, you could try doing what I did (with all the non-flickr related steps edited out ;-)

1. Disable Greasemonkey (don't uninstall).
2. Close browser and reopen.
3. Go to flickr, click on "Comments You've Made".
4. Go to your flickr homepage.
5. Enable Greasemonkey
6. Refresh page (flickr homepage)
7. Click on "Comments You've Made" ...

-- and see if that works for you.

Update --

I updated Firefox with ver 2.0.0.8, and, as of today, I experienced the same problems mentioned above (viewing comments beginning 5-7 days ago).

The "good news" ... I went through the procedure in my last post (about disabling Greasemonkey, etc.) ... and the script continues to work as it's supposed to.

I'm not a tech person, so I haven't a clue as to why this works the way it does, but I thought I'd post the information for any whose mileage doesn't vary ;-)
