I wrote a new Greasemonkey script called Flickr Contacts Organiser.

If you would like to see the script kept updated and developed further, please consider making a donation, every little helps, and it will mean i can spend more time developing and updating my scripts. See bottom of this post for how to donate.

Here are a couple of screenshots of the script in action:

Image demonstrating a search restricted to your tagged contacts:

Image demonstrating the new "Tag this person" menu item:

Latest Version is v0.77d -30th Jan 2013

This script lets you organise your flickr contacts into groups by tagging them. You can actually tag any flickr user they dont need to be in your contacts list in order for you to tag them.

To tag a user you can either do it from the contacts page, where a +tag link will be added next to users icons, or theres also a "Tag this Person" item added to the User Icon menus which means, in theory, you can tag a user wherever you are in Flickr :)

To delete a tag from a contact, click a tag on the contacts list page, then look at the list of user names, follow the name to the right and there should be a "-tag" link, click the "-tag" link and that tag will be removed from that contact.

Once youve tagged some contacts, if you go to the contacts page you can view the contacts listed by tag, there is also a select box called "Current Filter" You can change the filter to view photos from those tagged users.

The current list of available filters are:

* Most recent photos
* Most recent videos
* Earliest photos
* Earliest videos
* Recently favourited photos
* Most interesting photos
* Most interesting videos
* Least interesting photos
* Least interesting videos
* Recent photos featuring this user
* Recent videos featuring this user
* Random photos
* Photos of yours they've faved
* Photos of theirs you've faved
* Photos tagged with...
* Photos text includes...
* Their contacts
* Their contacts photos
* Photo tags you have in common
* Contacts you have in common
* Faves you have in common
* Groups you have in common
* Photos that have been commented on recently
* Testimonials they have received
* Testimonials they have given
* Comments (and favourites) they have made on your photos
* Comments (and favourites) you have made on their photos
* Photos they have commented on

I will be adding more filters and other features when i get time.

BTW The tags are stored locally in your browser settings, so are private to you, and it means they load faster than if they were stored on a central server. Though this way you dont get the "network effect" of shared tags, so i might add "shared tags" functionality at some point.

*UPDATE 19th April* Ive added some bugfixes and also added some new functions, accesible via the Tools/Userscript Commands menu, which allow you to backup and restore your Contact tags via flickrmail.

Updated: 4th May 2007
Added "Recent photos of this user" and "Interesting photos of this user" filters. These do a search for the following tags: "me,selfportrait,flickr:user=username" on the users photostream, and return either the most recent or most interesting matching photos depending on the filter you choose.

Added recent+interesting "Photos tagged with..." filters, which works similar to the previous addition, except with this one you can choose the tag/s you want to search for.

Update: 5th March 2009
Added new filters : Recent Videos, Earliest Videos, Most Interesting Videos, Least Interesting Videos, recent videos of this user, Earliest videos of this user, Most interesting videos of this user, Least interesting videos of this user, videos of this user by others

Update: 6th March 2009 Added image enlargement on rollover. Fixed auto alpha sorting of tags. Removed some code that doesnt yet work.

Update: 11th Jan 2011 Fixed for Flickrs login/username code change.

Update: 17th Feb 2011 Removed "recent comments on their photos" filter, as it no longer works. Updated photos of yours they have commented on, and photos of theirs you have commented on filters, to work again, (they now include favourites as well as comments)

Update: 30th Jan 2013 Fixed to get basic functionality working again. Some of the filters may not work any more, but the core functionality of the script should work again.

This and all my other flickr scripts are available here: steeev.freehostia.com/flickr

Donations gladly accepted :) Though this script is being given away for free, it is not free for me to develop it, many, many days and hours have been spent programming, testing and supporting it. If you appreciate my work, and would like to thank me, and also support future development and maintenence, please consider making a donation, big or small, every little helps. Good job! I love this one. Althought I wrote a script to mashup del.icio.us and flickr, as you said, it is not as fast as yours.

One question is, after I tried the script , the style of my flickr is changed to a wide screen, even I move to a new page. How can I change it back?
Thirsty? 12 years ago
Okay, maybe I'm not too bright. How do you delete a tag? Also the change filter option doesn't seem to work.
admin
steeev Posted 12 years ago. Edited by steeev (admin) 12 years ago
ck ive fixed the problem with wide screen on all pages now, please reinstall, it only goes wide on the contact pages now.

brew.beer to delete a tag from a contact, click a tag, then look at the list of user names, follow the name to the right and there should be a -tag link.

btw im getting the same error with the filters as you, and having a hard time figuring out whats causing it, it seems to be an intermittent problem,

Does anyone know what might be causing this problem? (its a select box that wont open up to display the options inside)
admin
steeev Posted 12 years ago. Edited by steeev (admin) 12 years ago
ok ive found out whats causing the bug with the filters select box.
if i remove the style="display:inline" attribute from the form, the select box opens fine, if i leave it in, the select box in the form wont open. anyone know a workaround for this?

Update i came up with a workaround in the end. i removed the display:inline style from the form and then just tinkered with the top + right style properties of the element holding the form, to position it where i wanted it.

you can reinstall the script to get the fixed version.

steeev Posted 12 years ago. Edited by steeev (admin) 12 years ago
i added a couple of new filters:
1)Photos tagged with..." + 2)"Photos text includes"

if you choose either of these filters, you will be prompted to enter some text. the script will then check whether in the case of 1) there are any photos tagged with that text by the currently selected tagged users or 2) if the titles, descriptsions or tags of those tagged users contain the text entered.

more filters are on their way.
.CK 12 years ago
This is marvelous. I like the filter function especially.

BTW, can we give multiple tags at one time? (separated by space)
admin
steeev Posted 12 years ago. Edited by steeev (admin) 12 years ago
ck, im glad u like it. you cant add multiple tags in that way at present, words separated by a space will be treated as a single tag. i might change this later though, thanks for the input.
Thirsty? Posted 12 years ago. Edited by Thirsty? (member) 12 years ago
@steeev
updated the script, now when I click on a tag it briefly pops up the "Contacts tagged with ...." and then it goes away. Never pulls up who is tagged.
admin
steeev Posted 12 years ago. Edited by steeev (admin) 12 years ago
oops, ive broken something. sorry about that. dont have much time to fix it right now. might have to wait a couple of days.

update Ive removed the offending bit of code, so the script should work again now.
Thirsty? 12 years ago
Like who's going to bitch? You guys do some really neat stuff for a whole lot of nothing. Keep the great scripts coming. Can't wait to see a bug free version of this one.
admin
steeev 12 years ago
ok i put the code back in that wasnt working and managed to fix the bug.
I also added a "rename tag" function and added some screenshots to the first post.
.CK 12 years ago
It all works fine. Thanks steeev.
Thirsty? 12 years ago
Rock On Brother Steeev! Rock On! Love it.

steeev Posted 12 years ago. Edited by steeev (admin) 12 years ago
Cheers CK + glad you like it bb.

ive added 2 new filters "photos of yours they've faved" and "photos of theirs you've faved" they both only grab the last 500 favourites per user at the moment, so if the fave is not within those 500 it wont show up.
admin
steeev 12 years ago
ive added 3 new filters to the script:
"random photos" - this grabs a random page of photos from the users photostream
"their contacts" - displays a list of some of their contacts
"their contacts photos" - displays 1 photo each from some of their contacts

And now that I've spent half an hour tagging my contacts at work, how do I synch them with my browser at home? :)

Perhaps there is an ability to synch with del.icio.us or something?

Also, how about an "all" tag. Most of my 200 or so contacts are people I don't know outside of flickr, and going through and tagging every one of them individually just so I can get access to the wonderful filters for my entire contact list is a daunting task...
brendadada Posted 12 years ago. Edited by steeev (admin) 11 years ago
Superb filters, love this steev. Can we add multiple tags, by putting them in quote marks, or something? That'd be really useful. Excellent script, thanks. :)
zen Posted 12 years ago. Edited by zen (member) 12 years ago
Wonderful filter additions steeev! And the script is hugely helpful.

One thing (isn't there always?), i seem to get a duplicate name - note the name Kliendigital for two people. The first one is the right one.

tagging duplicate

It may have happened when i tried adding a tag to Kliendigital that already had that exact tag added. I did get the message that he was already tagged with 'washeville' but it may have offset something else. Hope this helps!
slowbiex 12 years ago
absolutely love this script! thanks a lot for the great work!
tagging users is something that should have been implemented by flickr a long time ago...

have to look at the filter additions but can i suggest the possibility to look only at the last 3 pics when chosing "most recent photos"?
hk_traveller 12 years ago
It is a great idea and maybe Flickr should consider to add it as a standard feature.

:)
brendadada 12 years ago
Steeev, my tags aren't being saved. When I go to my contacts lists, the tags I wrote a few days ago aren't there, just the ones I've written in this session.

Is there an issue with that for anyone else?
admin
steeev Posted 12 years ago. Edited by steeev (admin) 12 years ago
zen, i havent encountered that bug myself, thanks for letting me know about it. i will look out for it in future.

brendada, i think i know what the problem might be, did you attempt editing the script at all, before this happened?

btw anyone wanting to backup their tags, all you need to do is open the prefs.js file, which on windows is stored in "c:\documents and settings\[YOUR PC USERNAME]\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\profiles\[some random letters].your firefox profile name" in a text editor, then look for the lines beginning with "user_pref("greasemonkey.scriptvals.http://steeev.f2o.org/flickr//Flickr Contacts Organiser"
and copy those lines to a text file and save it somewhere. then if you want to restore the tags, just open your text file, copy the lines, then open the prefs.js file and copy your backed up lines over the old lines.
N.B you should make sure firefox is closed before attempting this, and also be really careful, as you might mess up your browser settings if you get it wrong, so only attempt this if you know what you are doing.

brendada, if you could send me those lines from your prefs.js file, i could have a look to see what the problem is.

BTW ive added 3 new filters to the script: "Faves you have in common", "Contacts you have in common" + "Recently commented photos"
zen 12 years ago
Steeev, Oh well meant to tell you that i deleted the duplicate (took them off that tag) and put them back and it's working fine. It may be one of those rare and hard-to-duplicate bugs that really aren't worth pursuing.

Hello Steeev, thank you for this nice script.

My problem is that is not atually working for me.

I don't have the Tag this person button on the scroll and I don't have the tag button near the user icon...

I'm using the new version of Firefox and I have already installed other scripts from you after installing this one, and they are all working.

Thanks

centrifuga wrote:

how do you know its nice then? hehe ;-)

i just installed the latest FF, and the script is working fine for me. your problem could be caused by another script clashing, or it might be due to an incompatibility with the latest GM version, as i havent tested this script on the latest GM, ive tested it on GM 0.6.4 and it works fine. if you have got the latest GM version you could try to uninstalling it and installing the older one, and you could also try disabling the other scripts you have installed to see if that fixes the problem.

btw i noticed a bug in my last release, the bug is in the "Their Contacts" filter. if you selected it, it would usually cause the browser to freeze up for long periods of time. ive fixed this bug and released a new version.

UPDATE just noticed another bug, and have updated the script again, this bug might have been causing your problem centrifuga, try updating the script and see if that works.

Potential small bug: I accidentally added a tag "top'" (top and then a single quote), that apparently doesn't have any users associated with it. Since it's not plaintext, evidentally I can't delete it, or it didn't get added.

Can I edit that file in the filesystem somewhere? (Cookie, perhaps?). My programming skills are solid except in the javascript arena ... that, and I'm kinda slack :)

Cool! This is script is getting better and better.
The "comments they've made or you've made" are from RSS feeds or API?
AdaMacey Posted 12 years ago. Edited by AdaMacey (member) 12 years ago
How about an untagged tag? I've just added some new contacts on another computer without this script, and it's no easy feat to find them in my list of contacts on the computer with the script. They would be my only untagged contacts however.

steeev, I'm loving this script, but I'm desperate for some way to synch the details that doesn't involve manually hacking the prefs file. I use 2 different computers at home, one linux, onr windows and I use another at work, all of which run this script. Updating two computers whenever I chagen the tags on one is a killer. Given that it's just a text string, there has to be some way of storing it online that can be retrieved from other places.

Profile page? Private images? I know you chose not to use del.icio.us, but if the string is stored somewhere on one external page, rather than one page for each contact, then there shouldn't be too much of a performance hit, just a load and synch the first time it's ran in a given session...
.CK Posted 12 years ago. Edited by .CK (member) 12 years ago
I just hope Google Browser Sync can add to sync selected "about:config" value, so we can sync our GM values.
AdaMacey 12 years ago

.CK Posted 12 years ago. Edited by .CK (member) 12 years ago

I just tested it. It doesn't work.

I saw many TODO list in the script. There's an item:
backup/import/export tags (possibly linked with del.ici.ous)
I guess steeev will implement it in the near future.
AdaMacey 12 years ago
Well there you go. That's all I could ask for. Many thanks for looking .CK, and thanks for considering it steeev

Hello!
The script doesn't entirely work for me. I have the latest version of FF and the recommended version of GM installed.

The links "+tag" are showing up and I can write tags, but they aren't saved (I think).

My pref.js file doesn't exist where steeev sayd (i.e. c:\documents and settings\[YOUR PC USERNAME]\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\profiles\your firefox profile name). I searched and found it at this location: C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\defaults\profile. I opened it in a text editor and found no such lines as "user_pref("[...]".

What can I do now? :)

They are actually via screenscraping google search results, i should really use their API, but ive tried a few times in the past to get an API key, but couldnt get one. Will try again one day.

petite corneille wrote:

Ive made a minor update to the script, which might possibly fix your problem. Ive also added a new filter "Photos they have commented on"

Also in lieu of an automatic script update check, which i will add in a later release, ive changed the version number of the script that gets displayed at the bottom of the filtered contact results into a link to the script on my server. So if you want to check if theres an update the lo-tech way, you can just click the link and compare the version numbers.
El Perico de El Palo 12 years ago
Hello Steev, now does not work, what happens? it gives the option to see tag me, but later it does not leave anything.

Greetings and thanks
petite corneille 12 years ago
steeev: I installed your updated version, but everything works except that the tag I've just written in the popup window still isn't displayed beside the tags:-title on top of the contacts page. Do I understand it correctly if I say that the path difference for the pref.js file doesn't matter?
earth2marsh 12 years ago
Strange... I'm having trouble with this new version too. Now when I enter the contacts page and click a tag, everything below shifts down enough to show the line "Contacts tagged with [...] rename tag", (with the right number of ppl with that tag) but it disappears and collapses back to where it was a second later, having never shown any of my tagged contacts.

Steeev, may I suggest a feature? I realize that on the ToDo list is, "ability to subscribe to a users usertags via flickrmail / rss feed"...

Since flickr feeds support the ability to query different users in the same feed, it would be very cool to have a link that creates a feed URL out of a tag set of contacts!

(posted this to the discussion linked to by the script, but perhaps this one is better? --got here from web page, btw.)

ive updated the script to fix a compatibility problem with the latest version of Flickr Shades. the backup and restore your contacts tags function is coming soon.

I use this script everyday and find it invaluable. But it appears to have stopped working and disappeared. It is enabled in Greasemonkey, all my other scripts work, but on the Contact's page I no longer see the tag groupings I created at the top and none of my contacts have the +tag or -tag option next to their names.

The only change I have made to my system is to download a new version of my firewall. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do short of reinstalling and if that works having to retag all my contacts? Which I will do if necessary just to get this wonderful feature back into operation.

@ Steeev... This script is invaluable to me. I am in awe and extremely thankful for all the effort you so generously devote to making my Flickr life easier. Thank You!

Unfortunately, I too can no longer see the tags and groupings I had for my contacts. In your comment immediately above " john w " you said "restore tags" was coming soon. Wondering about the status.

If the "restore tags" fix is not imminent I assume I should delete the script I have, download and install the new version and then re-do my contact tags.

But... before I do that, I thought I would check to see if you have an estimate of when you might find the time to dothe "restore tags" fix.

Many thanks, once again.
numberless basket [deleted] 12 years ago
I would also like to add my thanks to you for this script - it has eased my frustration level greatly.

In my ideal world, two filters would be added:
1. Most recent photos tagged with.... [the current 'photos tagged with...' gives some images, but not the most recent, it seems]
2. Photos in the group... [meaning I would see photos from the contacts that I have tagged that are in a specific group].

Seriously - this is the best hack ever.

for the people having problems with losing all their tags, ive finally nailed that bug, the latest version can detect if the tags datastore has been corrupted and wont display, and will attempt to fix them automatically.

Ive also added functionality for backing up and restoring your tags, Ive added 4 new menu items, in the "Tools/Greasemonkey/Userscript Commands" or "Tools/Userscript Commands" menu (depending on what version of GM you are using):

1) You can backup your tags datastore to your flickrmail account
2) You can restore your tags datastore from your flickrmail account
3) You can display your raw tags datastore.
4) You can restore your datastore via direct input of the raw tags datastore code (you would need to copy and paste the datastore from the first menu item or from your flickrmail)

the backup and restore functionality will mean users who want to use the script on multiple computers, will be able to export their tags from one computer and import them on the other/s.

there is a little bit of a bug when restoring your tags after storing them in flickrmail, any usernames with "non standard" characters may get a bit mangled, though this shouldnt affect the majority of the scripts functions or usernames. though i will see if i can fix this.

steeev Posted 12 years ago. Edited by steeev (admin) 12 years ago
Ive updated the script again, this time i added "Recent photos featuring this user" and "Interesting photos featuring this user" filters.

I also fixed the "testimonials they wrote" filter and the intermittent stream duplication bugs.

steeev Posted 12 years ago. Edited by steeev (admin) 12 years ago
ive updated the script again, it now supports tagging with unicode characters, also when you click add tag, the dialog box, now shows a list of the current tags that user has. Also the buddymenus now work for usericons (sometimes..) they only seem to work when you select the "dont show any pictures" filter, and they also work on the "show this users contacts" filter. Thanks go to mortimer for helping out with the buddymenus code.

bug fixed: if you backed up your contacts to flickrmail and restored them the usernames with unicode characters in them would get mangled, this is now fixed.

i added a "contact details" filter, if the tagged user has added any of the following information to their profile, it gets displayed when you select the "contact details" filter: real name, home town, occupation, email address, Yahoo Messenger, AOL messenger, MSN Messenger, ICQ. The messenger details will also show an icon displaying whether that user is currently online or not.

Is there a way to find out all of your contacts who DONT have you listed as a contact? That would be quite useful to me :-)
Thanks
Cooriander 12 years ago
Is it a way to tag all your contact at once - or do you have to tag each individually?

I would like to tag all of my contacts 'ALL' so I can use the filters on them.... it is a real pain to go trough all the contacts and add the 'ALL' tag to each individually....

It would also be nice to be able to use the filters on the 'untagged' contacts...

Hate to keep bugging you but I seem to lose this script periodically. It happened again and I don't see duplicate versions. I uninstalled and then reinstalled and it is working again, but of course all my old tags are gone.

This time though I have them backed up in the Flickrmail Data Store, but when I restore using Tools/Greasemonkey nothing happens. I can look in my Flickr mail (and in my computer"s mail system) and see the email.

Is there some trick I'm missing in getting this to work.

Sometimes perseverance pays off. Restoring from the Flickr data store did not do anything, but when I copied the string in my flickrmail and then used the Restore tags via direct input and pasted the string into it, it worked like a charm and reestablished all my tags..

The script works fine for me, and it is well thought out. 2 suggestions for you to consider.
1/ auto tag all contacts when added with "all"
2/ can you provide an audit so that all contacts can be listed showing the tags assigned to each (if any).

You may have some suggestion making it unnecessary as I haven't been using it for long and there could be features not obvious to me.
Regards

Great script but I think I found a bug it looks like if a users name is more than one line long it won't let me add a tag (using +tag) for them... I tried every person on page 3 of my contacts, and anyone that has a name that breaks 1 line won't allow me to tag them.

There is a nice filter (Contacts you have in common). I would like to see a filter that lists all the contacts that a contact has but not that in common. Is it possible?

Anyone else having trouble getting this script to load suddenly? I've tried emptying out my cache and nothing - just perpetual loading pattern. It's been like that for the last couple of days (since the last Flickr reload).

Shame that the new GM update has made contacts organiser stop working.....this is such a hassle as CO is so useful to me that I wouldn't be without it!
I think it deleted all the configuration... so bad...

mine is totally shot too. :( i miss it!
arrrrrggg!! I love this script, but something has changed an not of my tags are loading. I have checked the prefs.js file and the tags are still there with all the right contacts. Somebody know how to fix this?

The Greasemonkey Security Update discussion has a workaround solution suggested by rgdaniel which involves reinstalling the previous Greasemonkey script addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addons/versions/748. Version 0.7.2007.

I had the same problem and going back to the prior version now has all my scripts restored and working - Contacts and Groups Organizer and Multi Group Sender as well.
Thank you John!

I don't get it, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I've tried everything, disabling all of the other scripts, newer versions of GM, older versions, reloading cache, restarting computer.
The only one that shows up is the +tag option, but then it doesn't do anything after I add a tag.
:( bummer, as I was really looking forward to using this one :(

I'm using version 2 of Firefox and have installed the latest version of Greasemonkey. When I tried to install a new script, this does not appear in the script list. I am using an Italian version of Firefox. Please help

Does this script not work for MAC's?

I use a MacBook , the latest version of Firefox and I'm able to add tags, but do not see them or anything else at the top of the page like I'm supposed to...

Maybe I need to update GreaseMonkey?

Update: Latest GM made no difference, still wondering if it's a MacBook (with Intel) issue...

...To the other people who have the same problem (not seeing anything other than "+tag" next to contacts, please post what machine and OS you're using. If we establish a common problem maybe Steeev will help us get it working!
