GM Script: comment "seen in foobar group" footer...

view profile

clickykbd  Pro User  says:

This came up in "group announcements" group...

It was thought a nice way to subtly hint at how photos are being seen/found.

If I arrive at a photo from a group pool, and comment, append a footer saying...

seen in example group

Also include a tiny link so others could find and install the script.

An expanded feature version could be more sensitive to other flickr pages where photos are seen. "seen in explore", "seen contacts stream" or "seen in set foobar". Knowing the previous page may not be possible in all cases... but certainly in some.

*UPDATE* Mortimer? developed a greasemonkey script that does this, and you can get it here

This is a cool idea. I have started working on that script. It's not really difficult. Just two things:
- the styling is really limited in the comments, so it's difficult to show this part of the message in "small" :(
- we should make a list of all the pages that have an importance, I found:
o group
o group discussion
o someones feed
o a search
o a set
o the interesting archive and the explore page
o the "contacts' recent photos" page.

any othe idea?

update I added a "seen on the Web" if the referrer is not part of the flickr site.

Personally, I added a "seen in your popular shots" from one of this off-flickr tool showing most interesting photos for one user.

Any chance of including a referral from someone favs. At the moment it defaults to "Seen in your photostream" with the correct URL to the favs.

And while I'm here. Quite a few people add images and links to image comments so that would be useful too.

I'm never satfisfied!!! But even as it's stands it's a great tool.

Example

If I click on the West Virginia State Fair pig which was posted in the comments under my OINK OINK image. When you view the West Virginia State Fair pig the referral in the comment says that it was found in my photostream rather than in the comments under the OINK OINK image. It would be great to say it was found in the OINK OINK comments and perhaps use the permalink to link to the precise comment.

Ok LeoL30, I get it.

There is obviously a problem with the naïve approach of always saying "Seen on your photostream" as it can be from someone else photo stream (either by a comment or one of the pool box on the left...).

We can know that we are comming from another user with a pool box as the current url will have inpool in it... update the new version does that.

The only other thing we can know if we do not have that is that we come from a different photostream, but there is no way (except by having the script record where you clicked on the page before) to know from which comment.

I'll try to implement that soon.

Thanks netomer, I'll correct all that.

By the way, it is useless to have this script activated when you are viewing YOUR photos.

The easiest way to achieve that is to go into Tools/Manage User Scripts, select Refer Contacts and add into exclude: *flickr.com/photos/YOURID*

As for referrers... I haven't checked yet... but does clicking "open in a new page" from a slideshow give us any useful referral info? You can view slideshows of lots of things and I often do, but pause to go directly to that photo to comment.

Awsome stuff.

Okay cool. this script handles it already.. the other one (button method) does not.

@Leo...

Are you requesting a image that goes with the group it was seen in... or more like an image signature? I don't think images other than actual commenting with a relevant image, is something we really should encourage. Everything can be accomplished with links. And this is about function, not form...

Tools like this help promote all your groups equally and provide a paper trail as to how the photograph was encountered. They are not really group promotional tools per say... just a new global feature.

ahh wait! sorry... mis-read your request again... that example had lots of image comments of various kinds. I see what you mean. Point back to another comment where the photo was displayed!!

That and another example... when people hot-link photos into forums... some referral for that case too.

I updated the script to support:
- coming from an archive page
- coming from some FD's toys
- coming from Gustavo's FlickrRandom
- coming from LfVr and maps.yuan.cc
- coming from a comment under another photo (following the requests earlier)

this last feature is based on the difference of user name in the url. If you come from the same user but one of the page uses his id and the other one his username, then it will bug.

The only trick is to get rid of all white space. Inluding spaces inside text output. You have to replace those with %20 . There are also some tricks with nested parentheses so that the script doesn't navigate to a new page.

I'll give it a shot.

I think this script would exceed the browser standards for URL length as a bookmarklet, though most browsers ignore those standards.

I have noticed one bug recently... and I'm trying to reproduce it, having trouble actually. But it is a chain of navigation events that results in two copies of the breadcrumb being placed in the comment field.

@Algo, it's difficult to be more specific, I am not sure what you mean about that? I could probably find from which specific photo in the stream we come from, but am not sure if that's useful (the link stills go backs to the specific page, it's just the text that is not specific)

@Kris Kros, the idea is to leave a path from every places we can to give the more information possible. If you want to disable a specific text, just add a // in front of the line for that comment in the script (choose edit from manage users script).

"Seen in your photostream" is of little use to the original author. But it does provide some use to other commenters. If everyone commenting had that link instead of "x group or y group" then it would be a good indication that was a fun stream to follow on a more personal level.

It wouldn't work directly as a bookmarklet (you have to strip all the object notation and the general bits clearly for greasemonkey.

Then, you have to remove the unsafeWindow calls to window (or nothing, I am not sure) calls.

I am not sure that RegExp and Xpath would work in other browsers, I rarrelly use others.

The easiest would be to have the script on a centralised server (I can keep it on 6v8 if you want) and then just a really simple bookmarklet to that calls it.

I have no time to do it all, but if you want to have a go, I can help.

This is a very cool & useful script -- thank you for writing it!

I did notice one thing, though -- I went to a picture, then viewed another size of the photo. When I went back to the comment field (with the back button), the link got added a second time (since the browser remembered the first). Could the script maybe check if the text is already in the field?
Posted 82 months ago. (permalink)

view photostream

mortimer? says:

@masone the easiest way to do that is to go in Tools->Manage User Script, select this script and add in the "exclude" box a rule to exclude pages with your photos:
*flickr.com/photos/masone*

@C4G, it's a bookmarklet/favlet, what you have to do is DRAG the link in your bookmark bar. Do not click on it, just drag it to the bar.
Then, when you are on a photo page, click on the bookmark.

I just have one problem, and cant figure out if I am the cause.
My problem is that sometimes it posts the link twice in the comments box. Sometimes it also just posts it once.

Correct - Single link:
www.flickr.com/photos/28644329@N00/222868738/
www.flickr.com/photos/cobalt/222886382/

Not correct - Double link:
www.flickr.com/photos/kirby_ski/222320127/
www.flickr.com/photos/lecasio/217677626/

Sorry I cant link directly to the comment, just look for my name in the comments. I havent noticed it being in the comment box double before I click post now, but havent really checked that yet either. If I notice it from now on then I will let you know.

Has anyone else had this problem before?

@mortimer?, I have one other request to make. I view most of my group photos via RSS in Thunderbird. When I click on a link to go to a page and comment, the URL does have a reference to the group's pool (as the Flickr code, not a plain text name), but the comment doesn't show up. I suspect this is because there's no referer as the link click originates outside Firefox.

Would it be possible to add code to check the current URL and parse out the appropriate situation when there's no referer?

Thank you again for a highly useful script!

@Andy Thinkham, I am not really sure what you would expect the comment to be in that case. Is it that you would like the urls with /in/group and /in/set to generate comments even if there is no referer?
Posted 82 months ago. (permalink)

view photostream

mortimer? says:

I updated the script so that:
1- the duplication bug should be fixed
2- it also inserts comments when there is no referrer but the url gives us a hint on the set or group we are looking at
3- when you browse photos in a set, it inserts a comment that you come from a set (like the "fellow photo from group..." but for the sets. I don't know why this was not implemented before).

* Bookmarklet needs no update
* Users using GM can either update manually or use the script update GM script.

Andy Tinkham  Pro User  says:

@mortimer? That sounds like the general idea I'm looking for (though the group ones actually use /in/pool).

I've got two types of RSS feeds of photos that I subscribe to from Flickr -- one is subscribing to a group pool. Those have the /in/pool portion of the URL (though they use the flickr id code, not the group name). The other type is subscribing to the feed of all the photos of my contacts. Unfortunately, this doesn't have any appending to the URL -- it's just www.flickr.com/photos//

I'd definitely like the group ones to have the comment automatically added.

It would be nice if the individual feeds worked automatically as well, but I don't know that there's enough information present to distinguish an RSS feed click from any other basic link to a photo page. Even the lack of referer is not enough, because someone may have bookmarked a photo page or manually typed the URL.

Does this make things clearer?

(By the way, I installed the update and no longer get the double comment!)

Thank you!

Andy Tinkham  Pro User  says:

@mortimer -- It looks like the latest version that I installed earlier is mostly doing what I want now. When I follow a link from a group picture from Thunderbird, the comment does appear. The one piece that seems to not be working is the link URL. While the comment gets the group name correct, the URL always points to www.flickr.com/groups/undefined/pool

(See, for example, www.flickr.com/photos/tiger-lily/223455878/in/pool-259519...

@elmshire, you'll only see something if you come from a recognised referer. For example, go to a group, then click on a photo on the pool, this "path" will generate something.

The other reason I can see why you do not have anything showing is that you have an extension (like stealther) that hides the history.

Feature request: It would be nice if all that (www.) flickr.com be stripped off from the beginning of the link.

Why? I can explain better using this scenario:
Let's imagine Joe A uses www.flickr.com (w.f.c for short) regularly, and John B uses flickr.com (w/o www). Joe A's browser cache already has lots of images stored from w.f.c, and John B's browser cache is filled from stuff from f.c.

One day, Joe A clicks on that nifty comment link left by John B, and, all of a sudden, all that chached imagery is useless, and that page takes a lot to load, and Flickr also wastes a lot (well, maybe a bit) of bandwidth, because Joe A's browser cache has nothing from f.c.

The idea of that is too tell other people about the script, so after a while, spreading like a virus, everyone will know about it, use it. And our life on flickr will be happier, and it doesn't change much to you or the one you comment on to have it I think.
Anyway, if you really want to remove it, go to the manage script and to edit script... then find the ?

I finally got around to installing this great script. The problem I am having is that it auto inserts the script whether I choose to leave a comment or not. So I have to close the tab to get out of it, instead of moving to the next photo. Is there something missing in my exclusion list? Thanks for any help.

@susurrus sparks - If I understand you correctly, you are saying that text is automatically added to the "Add your comment" box, whether you want to make a comment or not. This is not a problem, since if you don't click the "Post Comment" button, the text will never be added as a comment. Just keep browsing as usual.

However, it would be possible for the script to be modified to only add the text when the user clicks within the comments box for the first time.

The script is really great. I don't know if I am posted to the right place, but it has made commenting so much easier.

I recently clicked on the [?] symbol on this "seen in blabla" line and it appears to me that it links to the wrong place.
It links to a small discussion in the Group Announcements groups, to which can't even be added because an admin locked it.

Maybe it would be nicer if the question mark linked to this thread, because it is not so nice to direct people to a locked discussion (makes one feel a bit unwelcome) and because this thread appears to be more informative and up to date about the script.

Hi,

It’s a great script and it works fine. But would it be possible to delete the question mark at the end (linking to www.flickr.com/groups/groupannouncements/discuss/72157594...

Thanks,

èti and verybigjen you are right, this is the wrong address. I now link to the 6v8 web site so people can directly download the script.
I put a link to this discussion on the download page so people can come and discuss.

However, users using the old greasemonkey versions will still link to the original thread.

Jan Teekens, as I said before, I want to keep this ? so that people can discover the script and use it. It would be really nice if everyone used it at the end ;)
If you use the greasemonkey version, you can edit the script (from greasemonkey configuration) and remove the link, on line 199.

I love the idea of this addin, but every link I can find to install greasemonkey just gets me a message saying "firefox couldn't install ... invalid file hash (possible download corruption)".

Am I doing something wrong, please, or is the problem with greasemonkey?

Yes I restarted ff, but it's the installation of gm that won't happen in the first place!

The install the error message "firefox couldn't install ... invalid file hash (possible download corruption)" is talking about, is the install of greasemonkey!

I've tried several different places to find a copy of greasemonkey that will download and install but everywhere I've tried I get the same message in firefox!

Help!!

Hi there. Err, hopefully this is the right place to post this...

Suggested addition (somewhere in there):

} else if(referrer.indexOf('utata.org/spotlights') >= 0) {
this.insertComment("Seen in the spotlight.",referrer);

A few similar things might be releavant for utata, specifically... Feel free to bug me if you'd like me to try to sort out what they might be, but I thought I'd just mention it for now, since I don't even know if I'm posting in the right place.

Great script, by the way. Very handy.

One other possible improvement might be to have an option or something where there's a button to do the insertion, so that it could be optional. It's pretty easy to select all and delete to start with an empty comment, but it might be easier to leave that out. (I like to not use that part of the comment in certain cases, e.g. when I'm walking through someone's stream commenting on a series of images -- in which case I often leave it in for the first one, but delete it for the rest.)

I would also suggest that, rather than "Seen on the Web", the text gets more specific and gives a shortened version of the site url. For example,
if seen on:
www.example.com/something/else.htm
-> "Seen on example.com"

if seen on:
myblog.blogspot.com/1/33/2006/
-> "Seen on myblog.blogspot.com"

And of course Flickrfox sidebar!
I get to 90% of my contacts' photos via Flickrfox sidebar, and when the photo page opens the referrer doesn't even show. It is only after I have written my comment and posted it that, in the next comment box, the prefilled text of the referrer turns up. I hope there's a solution for that!
I'd be very grateful for a solution...

Hi Mortimer,
I want to report a very small bug.
When your script adds the text, the cursur position remains after the added text. But it should be at first position of the textbox i think.
Specially for those (like me) who don't often use mouse for navigation, and use tab instead, it's a problem!
I by myself corrected the script, but I didn't post here because I don't kow if it violates your copyrights or no.

I added in version 1.0 the utata link, if you want to give me more, you are welcome

good idea, I implemented it in the last version, I hope it's gone work correctly

friedkampes, I know of the issue, but I can't do it alone. I am looking into it and might drop a line to the devs of that extension to see if it's possible to do something.

I fixed that bug, thank you.
The code is GPL so you can redistribute it if you want. I'll just appreciate that you leave a reference to where it comes from originally ;)

Rúben says:

Another bug, that's probably more related to a change by the Flickr-team:

The shortened version of the URL (formerly known as Seen on the Web) is changed by Flickr upon the submittal of the comment.

Example:
www.example.com/something/else.htm
should become As seen on example.com., but Flickr seems to think the "Seen on example.com" is the same URL and replaces this by the plain text URL.

You can see an example of the result here: www.flickr.com/photos/ozewiezewozewiezewallakristallix/33...

I've run some tests and a solution would be to put a dot (.) behind the text, so Flickr doesn't think the text is a URL.
