Library of Congress Flickr Co-curation Project: Let us know how you are getting on
|
As announced in the previous discussion post, The Library of Congress is asking for your help to curate a new set of photographs for Flickr Commons: www.flickr.com/groups/flickrcommons/discuss/7215763088775...
The most popular photographs will form a new set that is reflective of the diverse interests and expertise of the Flickr community. I’m a British PhD student from Newcastle University working with the Library on this project. My research looks at how cultural institutions are using Flickr Commons to promote their collections and support community engagement. I’m keen to find out what interests and motivates Flickr members, particularly when viewing and contributing to the collections on The Commons.
For the Library of Congress co-curation project we are asking Flickr members to create a gallery of their favorite ten photographs from the sets available on the Library’s Flickr Commons account: www.flickr.com/photos/library_of_congress/sets/. Once we have received everyone’s galleries (with the title My LOC Favorites) we will create a new set highlighting the most popular photographs from the Library’s collections on Flickr, selected by you.
We thought it would be a good idea to create a discussion post here in the Flickr Commons Group as an opportunity to share thoughts and ideas about the processes you went through to create your galleries – what images did you select and why? How did you go about searching for those images on the Library’s Flickr account? Did you have a theme in mind when you selected you top ten favorites?
We’d be really keen to hear from you and find out more about your experience so please feel free to leave any comments or begin a discussion here.
We look forward to hearing more!
Thanks!
Bronwen

Here's mine (linked in the other thread, thought it made sense to link it here too if we're discussing the subject):
I didn't search in the LOC account at all--I searched in my own favorites. There were 200+ LOC items in my favorites, so that was a good place to start.
Most of them are from the Bain uploads, so my top 10 are concentrated there, but I wanted to include one each from the Gottlieb jazz photos, the WWII in Color photos, and the Civil War Faces photos, because those are other sets I quite like.
I surrendered to my love of portraits--so all my top 10 are portraits.
As I scrolled through my finalists, something had to really jump out -- an image I keep going back to, using in projects, an image I put some work into researching, an image that connects to my fields of scholarly interest (disability history, women's history, history of cartography, art education), or in one case to Los Angeles.
The ten I ended up with are pretty representative of what I personally hope to find every Friday in the new batch--strong faces, sharp details, back stories I can either look up or imagine about.

Here are my favourites. I didn't do an extensive search through and haven't had time to explain my choices. I knew if I didn't do this straightaway I wouldn't have done it. One small thing is that anyone responding from UK would use English spelling to write Favorites/Favourites, and as you haven't asked people to send you the links to their galleries you might not find them all by a search.
My choices of photos were all to do with interests in how people alter their and interpret their environments, and also interests in children and indigenous peoples.

Hi Bridget,
Thanks so much for sending through the link to your gallery - it's a fascinating selection of photographs and very interesting to find out more about the reasons for your choices. Thanks also for pointing out the spelling issue - I'll make sure we look for both types of spelling when searching the galleries.
Thanks again!

Oops, looks like my multiple comments didn't save or get posted.
Oh well.
The comments were mainly about my surprise at finding only a limited number of images within these LoC sets.
Perhaps I looked in the wrong places.
Perhaps more are waiting on digitization and subsequent inclusion.
(Anyway, my interests and motivations in participating in this co-curating project were pretty much incorporated into the comments made alongside each of the images I selected)

My favourites below. Like Bridget, I knew if I didn't do it quickly, I would never get around to doing it. I looked into most of the sets, and opened anything that stood out into a new tab.
I guessed most of my favourites would come from the travel views as I studied geography, love landscape photography and travel. I was a bit daunted by the 1,286 photos. I didn't think I'd look through them all, but I was through them all before I knew it. It's a shame Flickr don't have a way to search within a set (...that I could find, anyway).
My favourites have beautiful, stunning landscapes with geometrical compositions - that's the type of photography I enjoy.
Thanks for asking me to take part - look forward to hearing about the research results, and it's been interesting to look through others' favourites too.

Wow, it's so hard to pick ten pictures. Most of mine are portraits, although not all. I love getting a sense of someone's personality through the years:

It's here. www.flickr.com/photos/lifeasdaddy/galleries/7215763107511...
First I went to my favourites page, and searched within for LOC. That brought up 60. I filled a tentative gallery, and easily reached 18. That left an overflow of another 6 contenders. Eventually I eliminated 14 to get my final 10.
I did not intend any particular theme of selection, but blow me down, it turns out my gallery comprises a couple of sub-themes of its' own.

Thanks so much to everyone who has created a gallery so far. There are some really fascinating choices and it's been wonderful reading through the reasons for your selections.
Thanks also for posting links to your galleries here so others can see what you have selected.

Just made the deadline!! I had to wait to explain my choices until my grandchildren who spent most of August with us had headed home.

Since the detective work is what I have enjoyed, I started by searching the web for my ID (and Flickr and LOC) to remind myself of pictures that had led to intriguing and appealing searches. I certainly don't claim that they are a "top" ten, but I picked about twenty from the web search results and then whittled down. I didn't deliberately pick themes, but personal stories of individuals in portraits is certainly one.

PS Another set of favorites will be found with the tag "crowd of hats".

Hi Bronwen, and all
In order to get the photos in the logical order I wanted, I have had to set up a new set.
Please see : www.flickr.com/photos/67908005@N02/galleries/721576314161... , and ignore the earlier one, as this became workings.
Currently, text nearly complete, though a little more research to do on photos 8 &10.
Thanks for all the views on the old one though!

Looking amongst all tags within my Flickr interest group, from which my favourites came, I found a special auto generated tag for items which turned out to be LOC pics, used to that point. Very useful, and saved much re-research! Hope that helps.

Thanks so much to everyone for contributing their galleries for the LOC co-curation project. We now have the wonderful task of going through them all and finding out which images are of particular significance and why ( tough job but someone's gotta do it!). Once we have looked at everyone's selections we will post a new set of 'Favorites' to the LOC Flickr account and I'll be in touch with more info on when this is likely to be.
I just wanted to take this opportunity to say a big thank you for taking the time to contribute to this project. I realise it was not a quick or easy task and I'm so grateful for your efforts and enthusiasm. I must admit it has been a wonderful experience to go through the galleries and read all about your selections. As expected, there have been a real variety of choices which never fails to remind me of the diverse interests and expertise of the Flickr community.
Thanks again!

Editing Galleries (Order of Photos, etc)
I read a couple of comments from folks who wanted to edit the order of the photos in their gallery.
With your Gallery open, in the upper right of your screen you will see the word "Actions ▾ " with a little ▾ (caron, or a háček) mark to the right of it.
Click on the caron mark and you can change the order of the photos in your gallery, or change the "featured" thumbnail, or delete your gallery.

Pixel Wrangler
Editing Galleries (Order of Photos, etc)....
Brilliant piece of advice, thank you. Wish I'd known beforehand - ended up creating a new one in the right order!
Might I suggest that you put this documentation in the "Help" series (if it isn't there already.

So Bronwen, I wonder if, once you're done with your academic work, we get to see your top ten as well? Or does scientific impartiality prevent you from forming a subjective opinion? :)

I never did find 10 in the LOC, my favourites are elsewhere in the Commons.
