Searching the Commons by colour

This is a little something that grew from some experimental work I was doing with our images collection at the National Library of Australia.

Search the Commons by colour - www.paulhagon.com/commonscolour/

I've only analysed around 10,000 of the images so far so it's still VERY much a work in progress & a little rough around the edges. Even with this small amount analysed I'm starting to draw some interesting ideas about the collection here.

Thought I would get it out there for some ideas & input. Let me know what you think. More details to come soon - enjoy!

Ooh, that's very nice. How are you extracting the colour info? Do you cope with multiple colours in an image, or do you just focus on the dominant colour?

Thanks. I'm breaking each image down to 32 colours & then extracting the percentage of colours. The search then looks for the image with the most dominant colour (with a little fudge factor in there). It can cope with multiple colours (eg: show me all images with blue & brown), but I haven't incorporated that in yet. Blog post to come explaining all the techie details.

Oooh, I like! It reminds me a bit of the Etsy feature where you can shop by color:

This is excellent. Reminds me of Patrick Lauke's experiment, with jquery and GD, to find the average colour of a photo by reducing it down to a single pixel: www.splintered.co.uk/experiments/100/

I've expanded on my colour search to work in the reverse way - is there a particular colour associated with a tag?

www.paulhagon.com/commonscolour/tags/

There are some really good results that come from comparing formats photochrom vs cyanotype. It gives a colour gamut for the medium.

Searching for colours is also interesting (red, green or blue). The background colour of the page could kind of be considered as the colour of the tag, but more often that not it doesn't work that well as it's a muddy brown.

Have fun exploring, the URL is totally hackable if the tag you want isn't part of the popular tags. There's also a bit more of a write up on my blog. Enjoy.
