Mysteries of the Commons
|
Most of the portraits posted to the LOC and other Commons streams get identified pretty quickly--a bunch of us enjoy tracking down who that man with the interesting mustache, or that woman in costume, was.
But some portraits, with names attached, have no identification yet, even months after their upload dates. If we collect them here for special attention, maybe a few will get renewed interest and a connection--to a field, or a place, or an event, if not to more.
I'll start with three 1910s women's portraits. Presenting Mary Elizabeth Kane, Kathleen Floyd, and Hester F. Rawley for your consideration:

first a question, then an answer. do we know if hester rawley is from the philadelphia area? if yes then i have some info.
my parents bought a beach house in avalon nj in 1973... down the shore. the house was owned by the late hester rawley. she was very old and they bought the house from her estate. we found many references, including love letters and a stetson hat that had the name john wanamaker on them. we speculated that she was the girl friend. sound riight?

Oooh! That's very interesting, gselld! And I know Avalon, too (inlaws used to go to Stone Harbor in the summer). She does look dressed for the shore.
Avalon, love letters and a Stetson hat, it sounds like the beginnings of a ballad...

gslid - Was just sent a link to this site by a Rawley cousin. Hester, her dad Cutter Brice Rawley, his dad Robert Green Rawley, his dad Daniel M. Rawley, etc. and all their lines are part of our tree. We would love any info you'd share from her letters or scans of them. Would you contact me? backinaholler@yahoo.com
