wow, that is a beautiful set the LOC has just uploaded
I was fascinated by these churches:
The Fantoft Church, Bergen, Norway
THEN (ca. 1890 and ca. 1900)
by the LOC
and
NOW (August 5th 2006)
by Sigríður
and The Stave Church in Gol, Norway
THEN (ca. 1890 and ca. 1900)
by the LOC
and NOW (May 28 2007)
(the rebuilt church, after the original was burnt down)

I could be wrong since these two don't look like they're from the same angle, at least, but here's my shot at one from Gudvangen:

and I have a close up of the "teeth" that matches pretty well:

These mountain tops look so sharp you'd think they'd break off at the slightest touch! Glad to see they haven't in the past 100 years.

The Buerbrae Glacier
and I'm pretty sure this is the same place even if the spelling is different.
These are of the Buarbreen Glacier which is apparently an offshoot of the Folgefonna glacier

We can't geotag, but we can add lat/long tags - don't those feed into some off-site applications?

Fascinating. And in most of these, the scenery looks so much better "then" than it does "now" (I mean the actual places, not the photography).

I think this must be the place even if they built the bridge and remodelled the river:

Love this thread. Lots of great shots. BTW: The comparison Bergen, Norway from Mount Fløyen is not accurate at all. The "then-shot" from Fjeldveien is taken more than a kilometer further in from the city centre and not from Mount Fløyen at all.

There doesn't appear to be a singular "Then & Now" concept thread... but the new flickr feature "photos nearby" is going to be HUGE for folks doing this kind of historic comparison:
Read it on the Flickr Dev Blog:
code.flickr.com/blog/2009/02/09/things-im-standing-next-to/
Example Commons photo & stuff near by:

I've been 'nearby-ing' loads of my photos.
So much fun!
And yeah, I agree- the 'nearby' feature is going to rock the 'Then and Now' s especially with the time filters it allows you to set.
For me the time filters are the really yummy bit of the new feature.

There is a discussion of the new "nearby" feature here. :)

This reminds me of the Childrens Encyclopaedia by Arthur Mees - whereby if you looked at it, you'd believe Scandinavia was inhabited by old women on sleds and smiling milkmaids - all in traditional dress.
The stereotyping photography from Mother Englands 1940's perspective is, well, entertaining.
What I find particularly intersting above is the retreat of the ice/glaciers that is evident.
