What's New, What's cool about the

Brooklyn Museum Collection in the Flickr Commons

A little bit of background from their flickr profile:
The mission of the Brooklyn Museum is to act as a bridge between the rich artistic heritage of world cultures, as embodied in its collections, and the unique experience of each visitor. Dedicated to the primacy of the visitor experience, committed to excellence in every aspect of its collections and programs, and drawing on both new and traditional tools of communication, interpretation, and presentation, the Museum aims to serve its diverse public as a dynamic, innovative, and welcoming center for learning through the visual arts.

The Brooklyn Museum in The Commons:
The Brooklyn Museum joined the Flickr Commons on the 28th of May 2008 with this amazing collection of Egyptian Lantern slides

as well as some lovely, hand coloured images from the Paris Exposition in 1900

And a very interesting blog: Brooklyn Museum Blog.

_______________________________________________________________________

Hey everyone,

We've had a ton of Commons-related issues that I've been blogging about and one thing that *really* excites me about this group is that we may have a chance to really talk and engage with the peeps looking at our materials - the sheer traffic at the Commons has made this a little difficult for us over here (we have a very, very small staff).

We are starting discussions internally in January to review our situation and talk about which materials to upload next and how best to proceed. If you have time, I would love it if you'd take a look at this series of blog posts: www.brooklynmuseum.org/community/blogosphere/bloggers/tag...

It would be great to get your thoughts as we move forward. Nothing would please me more than to get your feedback - it's really needed at this point in our journey.

What do you want to see?

OK, so we might as well ask....these are all sections of our Goodyear Collection that are ready-to-go, but currently cloaked on our profile. We can't release all this material at once or we have issues with traffic and workload, so we need to go slow. Moving forward, what are you interested in seeing? What should we de-cloak first? Anything here that sparks an interest or has cross-collection Commons relevance?

Tell us what you think - we are looking forward to hearing from you. (comment here or on the photo upload?)

Hey Shelley

We have a group of panoramas up (rural and street scenes) which will keep growing over time - so cross-collection wise, that rings my bells.

On the other hand, the museums & galleries set is beckoning my personal interests ...

A veritable smorgasbord of choices!

I'm rather intrigued by the 'Museums and Galleries' for a starter. Would you happen to know if any of the other Commons members are featured in the photos?

And for the main course, maybe the 'Street Scenes and panoramas'?
I like the way it would link up with other photos already on the Commons.

And I'll let you choose dessert.

When we were first working on the Goodyear Collection, where these images come from -- back in 1986! -- I just knew they were winners and wanted to get them out to the world. Back then it was so hard. What a change digitization and the Internet have made.

Imagine being a curator in the first couple of decades of the 1900s: Goodyear would head off to Europe to do his research for a couple of months at a time, camera, tripod and, presumably all the equipment he needed to make, shoot, and develop glass negatives on hand. He climbed all over the buildings you see in the pictures making measurements, hanging plumb lines, and checking angles.

This was all in support of his complicated theories on medieval architecture (pretty controversial in their time). Many of the photos are annotated on the back with what he was seeing and how it fit in with his theories, plus what camera lens he used, the f stop and exposure length. So they're more than a photostream of great pictures, they're clues to Goodyear's life and work.

And for us now, though, they're amazing documents of what these cities and buildings looked like before two World Wars. One of my favorite shots -- from Italy I think -- shows all of these little sheds nestled up against the walls of a magnificent cathedral. It just feels like a window into real life in 1910.

Really amazing stuff -- I can really get wound up about these images. So glad you're excited about seeing them!

(Oh, and I should probably note that I used to be the archivist at the Museum before I went of to the "dark side" and became the digital imaging maven (not that I wasn't when I was archivist).

Hey everyone,

Got a question for you. As most of you know, we have all these sets uploaded, but cloaked on our Flickr feed...now it's time to release a couple. As noted in this comment the question is how to get an entire set's worth of images to appear at the top of the feed. I had thought that we could batch process "date uploaded" in the Organizer, but I must have been mistaken...or I can't seem to find that feature (or I've got a bug on the account). Not sure.

Have any ideas on this? If not, we will just de-cloak, put a set announcement here when we release and move the sets to the top of the profile layout.

Thanks for your help,

Shelley

Trapac is a group moderator Trapac  Pro User  says:

The only way that I can think that I would do that, would be by opening the set in organizr as you have said already, and change the 'date uploaded' time, image by image. You could make them a couple of seconds apart, but I think where the timing is the same, flickr just separates them by seconds' for you. It's a pain having to do them one by one, especially if the set is enormous, but I don't think you can 'batch change' the times.

On the whole, within the 'main flickr', I'm not sure that changing the time of upload to get your image to the front of your stream is being encouraged, so it's actually not as straightforward as it seems it should be. (There are some who work the system to keep their image on the top of their contacts thumbnails you see, to increase exposure. Rumour has it, that images that have been uploaded in this manner won't get to Explore, but I have absolutely no way of knowing if that is true/validating it and it isn't really relevant in this context at all.)

Anyway, it seems that within the original context of flickr, batch-upload time alterations are counter intuitive to the social-sharing-fair thing. In the context of The Commons however, batch upload time alterations would be a very specifically helpful application to manage the interface in a more timely and efficient manner, so I can see why you are asking.

I'm not a techie at all, but I wonder if a Greasemonkey extension is even feasible for The Commons Institutions to use? Possibly worth waiting to see if someone who knows about the design specific stuff drops in.... :)

Excited about the forthcoming new sets being unveiled though......

The Synth tool that it asks you to install after you've created a photosynth account and selected "create synth" does allow for selecting multiple photos to upload in one batch via "shift+click" or "control+click" when in the file-browser.

Maybe you do not have these all on disk in an easy way to select... but pulling the flickr copies of a set down into a single directory is something maybe the developer types here could help you accomplish?

I'm not sure how public these user created photo-synths are once uploaded. If it turned out really cool photosynth might indeed want to know about it. There may also be a photosynth API for doing such things that is not advertised very publicly yet.

Along with photosynth, comes seadragon (another MS Live labs tool, and photosynth actually uses it), I've always though some "Seadragon" ways to browse massive "contact sheets" of whole institutions or the entire commons would be pretty fun!

@Brooklyn_Museum: I was talking to someone on the photosynth team the other day, but didn't bring this up. I will next time I do :) I'm not sure where manual tweaking fits into their short-term plans.

The key for these things - whether it's auto-panorama, or auto-3d, is volume of photos. And there have to be tons of Columbian Exposition photos out there. It will take collaboration between a whole bunch of museums and some private collectors to get enough to make it work automatically. Otherwise we have to wait for the movie adaptation of The Devil in the White City... it's gotta happen, right??

@clickykbd: Photosynths can be browsed or searched within Live Maps. It's a bit buried, but if you go to "Collections" on the right-hand side, and choose "Explore Collections", you can limit the results to Photosynths by choosing the right-hand icon in that left pane that opens.

I hadn't thought of using Seadragon, gotta look at that.

Hi everyone!

Got a set announcement for you! First off, some explanation. We've been collecting feedback from three locations: the Flickr Commons group thread, the thread in the Brooklyn Museum group and the on this pic. Many thanks for all the feedback - it surprised us and helps us move forward.

Most people wanted to see the Street Scenes and Panoramas, followed by the Museums and Art set, followed almost equally by Turkey and Pompeii sets. Turns out, when we looked - Street Scenes and Panoramas are all street scenes of Turkey, so that set is has been renamed and will be released today.

Next, we carefully looked at Museums and Art and realized there are still a few things we have to talk about internally before we release that material. Goodyear was shooting when he visited other museums and, while it is fascinating, the institutions in the shots probably need a heads up before we release that set - we are working on it, but it may be a while (sorry for the tease).

Since we are releasing Turkey: Street Scenes, we decided to release the related Turkey: Mosques, given that it was also pretty high on your list.

So, with that:

Turkey: Street Scenes
Turkey: Mosques

Many thanks to dopiaza for giving us a tool to batch move all these cloaked images to the top of our feed!

Also, be sure to check out Deirdre's post in the Brooklyn Museum blog - she just posted today about some additional history related to Goodyear.

Thanks,

Quick note everyone! We just completed the scripting on our side to bring the tags into our collection online - yay!

On our site, we do tagging by attribution (for those that setup Posse accounts), so when we brought over the tags from Flickr we created a posse account for the Flickr Commons - check that out here which enables us to show where the tags originated.

You can see what this looks like on a collection record here - when you click the "22" in parens it will drop down to show which tags were created by Commons as opposed to other Posse members as things get added. This concept of social tagging or tagging by attribution is a little more clearly seen on a record like this one where a bunch of posse members have contributed. Over time, as our onsite Posse tags away at commons images, we will have a nice mix of personal contribution on the records.

For now the Commons account is the top tagger but some of our posse peeps are not far behind!

The Nile

I was asked to post here by Lu_ after she saw us post to our Flickr account. Some of our team are in Egypt right now on a dig and they are posting weekly updates to the Brooklyn Museum Blog. Weekly status updates every Friday for the duration of the Dig. Mary, the dig's photographer is also sending photos along the way.

#2
Wikipedia Loves Art

This is probably of the most interest to this group - a free content photography contest to help Wikipedia, anyone? Wikipedia Loves Art - a scavenger hunt photography contest being held in museums all across the world during February.

All the guidelines for each institution (and prizes-yay!) are posted to the Flickr group.

If you are interested in shooting, we'd love to see you. You can come at any time during February...or come to the meetups that are getting scheduled for some of the various institutions.

Also note, if you are not into the museum thing, but live in the United States and want to participate...check out the contest from the Film Society of Lincoln Center...old movie houses, anyone?

Many thanks and any questions just let me know!

My links didn't show up on Indicommons, so here's a followup. They're good pix!

Thanks for the good wishes! I was inspired to go looking for “anniversary” and “birthday” on Flickr and our website and offer this birthday party picture from the Brooklyn Museum collection (Heat, by Florine Stettheimer):
Brooklyn Museum: Heat.

It’s a little languid for how I feel about this event, so here’s a better one from the Commons:

Kinderen rond kersttulband met kaars by Nationaal Archief

And just to underscore the wonderful serendipity of the Commons, here’s another one that struck a chord:
Robert Henri by Smithsonian Institution

The Smithsonian mounted a series of amazing artist portraits from the 50th anniversary celebration of the 1913 Armory show. Robert Henri (pronounced Hen-rye, which always gives me a chuckle) is in our collection.

Happy anniversary, everybody!

Hi everyone!

Releasing our Italy: Cloisters and Convents set today from the Goodyear collection...just 9 images, but we've got more steadily on the way throughout the end of the year! Lots and lots of churches coming up...

Also note, we are using Suggestify so folks can suggest locations for each image - thanks, Aaron!

Here we go on our final set of Goodyear architectural photographs -- French Churches.

We seem to have a ghost in this one

St. Jacques, Rheims, France, 1907. by Brooklyn Museum
or perhaps someone who is just praying really, really fast.
