Do they care about it?
|
Hi,
I was wondering if Yahoo! cares about 1378 members whether they stay or quit.
The point i'm trying to state here is, I love flickr, and I love to stay away from Yahoo! service, but in case it was a must and there was no alternative to flickr, actually I'll not quit till I find alternative.
Do we have alternative list of flickr ?

WebClam [deleted] says:
the only alternative I have used in the past is webshots community.
It's less of an actual community than here, but it does have some nice additional bits that flickr doesn't.
I am reserving judgment until '06 when my renewal comes up

Yahoo only has to do the one single thing to keep everybody happy: promise faithfully to leave Flickr alone, and simply let the Flickr staff carry on improving the service.
That's all.
My fear is that over time they won't be able to resist tinkering with their new acquisition and eventually end up breaking it.

they don't even read these forums... or do they? I mean, do they care about our concerns?

well, there seem to be a few hardened Yahoo fan boys that drop in from time to time - make a few snide remarks about anybody that dares to express their concerns about what Yahoo gets up to - then they disappear again.
As for an alternative list, well the beauty of Flickr is it's uniqueness. But I'm sure there must be others in pipeline somewhere waiting to come along.

Groc, I do not want to turn any of Flickr thread into a flame, so I won't start with this one. Anyway, considering "out of the choir" voices as "Yahoo fan boys" doesn't help at all. I am not a Yahoo fan and never will be, but it's not my business who's the owner, as far as I'm allowed to post my photos here and I can browse other people's photos too. "Promise faithfully to leave flickr alone"? They will keep Flickr up and running until it's "business". Know the word? Ludicorp handed Flickr to Yahoo basically because it outpaced its expectations and it needed a bigger structure behind. Utopia doesn't exist.

Does Flickr read the/this forum? Yes they do. Do they care? This remains to be seen. All they've done thus far is to comment on our concerns and try to calm users BUT there are still several very valid concerns which have not been addressed at all and some skirting the issues. So until they directly contradict certain fears it would be safe to assume that we have every reason to worry about changes in our Flickr services.

[I work for Flickr/Yahoo]
Twodeadpoets, which ones haven't we addressed? Seems like I've written 10,000 or so words so far :)
(And, many people at Yahoo other than the Flickr team read these, and they do care, a lot.)
And, in response to the original question: of course we care. We want everyone to love Flickr. Otherwise our feelings get hurt :)
But keep in mind that the count of members in this group is not indicative of people are planning to quit Flickr - I'm a member (an admin, even - b/c I was invited and promoted by one of the people who set up the group) but I don't plan on quitting :)
And, in an interesting way, here's the evidence we care: 1,378 people signed up for Flickr between breakfast and lunch today. It's not really a significant number for us. And yet we're in here, and we're listening.
On the other hand, there are hundreds of thousands of other people who use Flickr who don't really care about Yahoo IDs one way or the other, but ten thousand here and a few thousand there want all kinds of different specific features, or various things fixed, etc. We're obliged to pay attention to those people as well, answer routing support/help requests, continue to work on Flickr, improve the design, speed, reliability, usability, functionality, fun-ness, etc.

Stewart, how many people are on the actual Flickr team? It seems to me, not that many.
I ask because I think its reasonable to assume that not all changes can be addressed immediately. There are only so many hours and so many people to work during those hours.
I wish people would give you guys more time to make implementations (or even to say "we have looked at this and considered it, but it isn't going to happen.") before they begin pointing fingers saying "see! see! they didn't address this! they don't care!"
