29 Jun 07 - Please only add photos to the pool which contain a three line cultural description. That's three full lines in the text box, not just three sentences. Thanks, and enjoy the knowledge!

About Finnish Studies

This group is for posting pictures of things that would be understood by most Finns, but would not be understood by foreigners without explanation. Therefore the description of every photo in the pool should have information explaining the relevance of the photo for Finnish culture or society.

RULES - The conditions of posting are:
(1) Photos should be of things, behaviours, events that would not be understood, thought strange or not accepted by those from outside Finland. Traditional and modern Finnish cultural artefacts and photos illustrating traditions or everyday situations are preferred.
(2) The photo must have at least 3 lines of explanation (in the description box). This is minimum and you can have more. You may also add links to relevant sites or notes to the pictures.

Anyone can join, but this group is particularly for those interested in Finnish culture, both historical and modern, or cultural anthropology and philology of Finnish.

Imagine you are teaching someone about Finland or Finnish culture and submit those images that are representative and explained. Bear in mind that there are other foreigners than just Europeans, Australians and North Americans. They might have heard of sauna or seen a snowman, but these thing are not universal.

This group is bilingual. You can use Finnish to name and describe your photo's subject matter. Somebody else can help you out with translating it and you can add the translation to photo's caption as well.

If images can be attractive then so much the better but it is not essential. Mugshots are okay too.
