Compatibility with Mac
|
Hello All,
Any Mac users out there using this camera? I've been reading that the mp jpg format does not open in Macs. Is this true. I would love to buy this camera but don't want to drop $600 on something I can't use.
Thank You!!!

It does work with a Mac, but the camera does not mount as a volume on the desktop. Doh!
The .MPO files are not seen by the Mac software which ships with the camera either (don’t install it - I don’t use it and it doesn’t do anything that iPhoto or Aperture can’t do better). However, get yourself a USB card reader, and you’ll be able to grab the JPEGs and the MPO files that way.
The .MPO files are really two JPEGs stitched together, and there are a number of applications out there for Macs which can open this file and extract the left/right image files from it.
There is Stereo Splicer:
web.me.com/ijunji/Challenge!_REAL_3D_and_Mac_E/Applicatio...
or
3D Slide Maker
www.thebox.myzen.co.uk/Steroscopic_Site/Software.html
(This is a bit buggy and will crash if you open two .MPO files in succession - I have notified Mike and he says he’s looking into it).
To name a couple.
Both apps will make anaglyphs, stereo pairs and will export left and right JPEGS if you want to create your own images using an app like Photoshop.
I use 3D Slide Maker for my anaglyphs on my Mac - despite the need to quit and restart it after each file save I do, it’s got a much better interface.

Here is a small list of Mac or Mac compatible software, some old and some new, some free, some not, If you are interested, Google for them
StereoMerger
StereoSplicer
SplitMPO
Anna by Home illusion
Anabuilder
Adobe Photoshop
Stereo Photo Maker under VM Fusion
3d Slide Make
RedGreen
some of these you will need a file splitter such as SplitMPO others will work fine, in my opinion the quickest to get to grips with is StereoSplicer, it outputs all your formats in one go with the ability to tweak the anaglyph, the best i think for anaglyph control is Anabuilder, a much older program, the developer is looking at adding .mpo import.
Stereomerger is a Java app and works well on a Mac is just takes getting used to the very powerful scripting engine, if you are happy with running a Windows environment or dual boot them probably i would plump for Stereo Photo Maker, after all it does what it says and its free, but for those who just want a quick no nonsense fast result StereoSplicer for your happy snaps
On a final note i am talking with the developer of stereo splicer in Japan, he is a great guy and is now developing his program much further and a major update will be available in March or April, it also now has support for movies.
Cheers
Neil

you should also check out the techie forums on Yahoo at tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/fuji3d/ be warned though it can get quite techie at times but there is a lot of useful info to be found there,

StereoSplicer works on a Mac. Install SS and double click on the MPO file and it opens. It creates multipe files - anaglyph, original R and L,cross and parallel.

Thanks for this thread guys! I was getting a bit upset that I couldn't do the stereo stuff on the mac, now that I can I am most happy!, I have only had the W3 for about 3 hours and I love it already!

I've had the W3 for several months. I use an SD-card reader to transfer files to my Mac and StereoPhotoMaker software to manipulate files. In particular, I've been able to create content to view on the camera's screen using the software. I take existing stock stereopairs (from any source), copy each half into a separate image and use SPM to create .mpo files which can then be viewed on the camera. SPM can also adjust parallax, which is convenient.
