About Film Noir Mood

"The term film noir means dark or black film. The French came up with the word in the late 1950s. The film noir style was developed in America in the 40s and 50s through dark crime dramas that were filmed with a shadowy type of cinematography."

Film Noir isn't just black and white photography, but a dark, gritty, moody feel. It's a time long lost. It's not just guns and girls playing dress up, but something far deeper than that. It's images that set up on the edge of your seat. They are mystery and something from the other side of the tracks. It's shocking just before you hit the horror wall.

For good examples of what belong in this group, please check out the Great Shots! thread. For examples of what has been removed from this group, check out the Pool Cleaning thread.

SOME TIPS:

* the photo should evoke a dark feeling - mystery, suspense, something sinister
* film noir is not horror or erotica
* black and white is very much preferred to color, but black and white by itself is not enough

THESE ARE REMOVED AUTOMATICALLY:

* isolated portraiture (portaiture against a solid neutral background)
* abstract images
* self portraits in mirrors where the camera is visible
* photos or screen captures from tv/movies.
* Pets, children, sunsets, & landscapes
* non photos (drawings, illustrations, etc)
* cheesecake/Beefcake shots
* Standard modern Street Photography
* Flowers, standard still lifes and anything that would fit on a hallmark card
* Pictures that you didn't take (family pictures, pictures of you taken by others, etc)
* Pictures that have website info on them or self promotion sites/info
* Anything that violates Flickr TOS

We don't want similar shots that are already in the pool. We want something unique that is Film Noir. It can have the same subject, but please do something different with your shot that we haven't seen 400 times before. Give us quality, interesting composition and light, and mood. No snapshots. No simple desaturations. No pointless shadows. No blurry, boring same old stuff day in and day out.

This is a curated group. Not everything gets in and very few gets added to the pool. Feel free to check out the pool cleaning thread if you have any questions.
