About Figueres

Figueres is the capital of the comarca (district) of Alt Empordà in the province of Girona, Catalonia, Spain.

The town is the birthplace of Salvador Dalí and is the location of the Teatre-Museu Gala Salvador Dalí which was designed by Dalí himself and attracts many thousands of visitors each year. It is also the birthplace of Narcís Monturiol i Estarriol who invented the first successful machine-powered submarine.

The city is twinned with Perpignan just over the Pyrenees in France, and the projected high-speed rail lines connecting Figueres to Perpignan via LGV and to Madrid-Barcelona via AVE are scheduled to begin service in 2009 and 2012. Unfortunately, the 2009 date has not been met. The French are ready, but the Catalans are somewhat behind schedule.
