About Fife Wildlife

Fife is recognised as an area with a picturesque and diverse natural heritage. The region is a peninsula with two thirds of its boundary surrounded by water, offering stunning coastline scenery, while inland are the equally impressive, windswept Lomond Hills and the rolling agricultural fields of the east.

Fife's wildlife is extremely diverse, particularly as a result of the influence of the coastal factors and the surrounding major mountain ranges of the Highlands and the Southern Uplands.
Fife Wildlife

Fife supports about 10,000 species within its 132,000 ha, with over 400 of these considered notable with regard to nature conservation, many on an international level. These species we share the region with range from the smallest bug to the great whales we often see off our beautiful coastline.

While much of inland Fife may be agricultural land or indeed urban, wildlife thrives here in addition to its success in the more natural areas dispersed throughout the region. There are an amazing array of beautiful areas that contain a wealth of wildlife throughout urban, rural, and coastal fife. Theses areas encompass a whole range of interesting habitats including woodland, grassland, heathland, marsh, and sand dune; to name but a few.

This vast variety of wildlife can be appreciated by simply venturing outdoors, or visiting one of 150 sites throughout the region that have been identified as being of particular beauty and value. The majority of these sites are open to the public and may include facilities ranging from pathways to interpretative boards and other recreational activity.

Fife Wildlife is a group for people living in or visiting Fife to share their nature and wildlife images and sightings. Only images captured in Fife qualify for the group pool. Look forward to sharing the fantastic nature and wildlife of Fife.
