LET'S PLAY!!! choose a favorite from the pool

view profile

marinkel is a group administrator marinkel says:

here's a nice game: i choose a favorite from the pool and write why it fits perfectly in this poe-scape.
the person whose picture i posted will do the same: choose a favorite, post here and write why it fits. if you cannot download the actual photo, just post the url and i'll do the rest. then that person will do the same and so on. here it goes:

wraith

i think this fits in a poe-scape because it feels like a spirit come back to haunt me...

i have chosen this one, but i cant get the pic to show up!

anyway, my reason for selecting this image as a fave in the poe-scapes pool is because it emphasises the complexities, both visual and spatial of the modern urban landscape.
the tumbling effect of the montaged images creates a weird tension, a dizzying sort of vertigo, a sense of unbalance, and a wonderfully portrayed concept of the present human condition.

help me get the picture up!!!!
i can't paste real links either:))))

thanks a lot and sorry for my delay, busy days here ;)

I would chose this image "The Ushers" by marinkel, not for being by marinkel, but for honestly expressing to perfection what this group is all about! The undefined horror, the fear of the unknown, the mystery and suspense Poe managed so well, are all in here, and the title suits just perfectly:

sorry it took me so long to pick the next one, but here it is:

fade to black and white

seriykotik's picture reminds me of poe's poem "ullalume" when walking through a grave yard. much of poe's work deals with death and graves. this picture for me perfectly defines the mood and gloom as well as that certain disquieting pulling-you-under of a poeish landscape...

Thanks very much marinkel. I've been looking through the pool and chose this picture by yuse:
flickr.com/photos/yuse/151297108/in/pool-fantoms/
But I can't find the code to copy and paste here! It works with my own pics but not with other peoples'.Can anyone help?

Anyway, Yuse's picture to me perfectly expresses the sense of isolation in many of Poe's stories, of the solitary man haunted by his memories, his inner demons, cut off from those around him and haunted by something that only he can see or hear. A great image!

Delicious fairytale, you are amazing, you read my thoughts exactly as to why I posted this picture in poe-scapes.

Picking a favorite was a difficult assignment -- all too many good ones and I came to tears with some of them. I wrote my master’s thesis on Poe and am now writing a book on him, and I constantly wonder what his creative process was. He lived in boarding houses in run-down sections of town, but steadfastly maintained his artistic integrity in the face of his difficulties. He walked the streets as we do, and sensitively observed the ordinary, feeding his imagination to take us places where no one has ever been. With that in mind, one picture stood out for me. Did an unfortunate, scared little monkey, maybe with an organ grinder on Nassau Street, or perhaps in Barnum’s Museum, live for all time in “Hop Frog?”

"hop frog" is probably one of the intensest of revenge stories of poe's, i think...
...

i'm also thinking of the "murders in the rue morgue". this could have been the life of the ape which drove him to commit his crimes...

well, which will be the next favorite, jude?

Thank you mobilohm! I adore your works for your subtle and delicate lighting, as well as mysterious atmosphere you achieve out of such simple scenes.

Ok, now my choice for the game is...

I think every one of Ricardo's photos is in my favorites collection. This horse particularly is one of the most surreal works of him. Beautiful and frightful at the same time, it reminds how diverse life can be: both the horse and the tree belong to the animate nature and consist of biological cells, both are beautiful, yet so utterly incompatible. That's one of the hidden messages our mind reads in this work, I think. Not to mention, it is magical, beautiful and is truly a work of art.

And finally... I'd like to thank Marinkel for this great idea ;) as well as her gorgeous photos! Poe was my favorite writer when I was a teen. Hope I'd be able to contribute more to this group... Thanks!

and i want to add that this is a great example of why poe is such a timeless wonder, he captures the feeling of aloneness and isolation for all solitary beings... best fit these words of his i think:

Alone

From childhood's hour I have not been
As others were; I have not seen
As others saw; I could not bring
My passions from a common spring.
From the same source I have not taken
My sorrow; I could not awaken
My heart to joy at the same tone;
And all I loved, I loved alone.
Then- in my childhood, in the dawn
Of a most stormy life- was drawn
From every depth of good and ill
The mystery which binds me still:
From the torrent, or the fountain,
From the red cliff of the mountain,
From the sun that round me rolled
In its autumn tint of gold,
From the lightning in the sky
As it passed me flying by,
From the thunder and the storm,
And the cloud that took the form
(When the rest of Heaven was blue)
Of a demon in my view.

Thank you so much kKaAtTrRiInNaA !

I think the reason Poe wrote what he did ... the feelings he had.. the obsessions - invade us all. That's why we can sense him in our images.. be they reminiscent of days gone by or modern.

I'll tell you a funny story about that photo. I'm a newspaper photographer and had an assignment at the local high school early in the morning. Kids were just starting to file in and down the halls. I walked around this corner and saw this kid all alone. In back of me were about 20 students who had just come in and were about to move down that hall to their lockers- jabbering, laughing, etc. I put up my hand and they all stopped and this silence fell as they waited for me to shoot this boy who was unaware.. Such respect! LOL!

My choice is this photo by motikat really grabbed my attention. The blood-like drips and stains running down the image of the animals seems to be a portent of things to come.. the slaughter of innocence..

There is a loss of innocence portrayed within this pic. But hopefully not a shape of things to come. I have strong feelings on factory farming, and a strict Vegetarian for these reasons. I think my reaction towards cruel farming methods is represented here.
right - I admit, i've only read The Black Cat by Poe (but I do have a collection of his books waiting to be read when I get around to it) - but I get the general vibe:
I think my choice would be Estrella with this untitled piece:
www.flickr.com/photos/mirlo/224708773/in/pool-fantoms/
It touches on the hidden fear within. An unknown presence, face obscured, hands hidden - the figure is almost childlike and is rendered ever so more chilling because of this possibility...

At any rate I think this is a fine image, well considered, well composed, with the quiet absurdity which I believe appropriate to Poe. This picture would have made Poe giggle and he would have shown it to young Virginia as he tucked her in for the night.
And of course, you can't not love a rabbit.
