About ∞

Facing infinity

Before photography existed, the cityscape was a popular genre in painting. A common theme in these paintings was human and nature; the relation between those two powers. In this group I would like to have a collection of photographic pictures which are a modern definition of human in the landscape. An old theme depicted in a new way.

"Infinity (sometimes symbolically represented by ∞) is a concept in many fields, most predominantly mathematics and physics, that refers to a quantity without bound or end. People have developed various ideas throughout history about the nature of infinity. The word comes from the Latin infinitas or "unboundedness"."

"Caspar Friedrich's work characteristically sets the human element in diminished perspective amid expansive landscapes, reducing the figures to a scale that, according to the art historian Christopher John Murray, directs "the viewer's gaze towards their metaphysical dimension"."
