UPDATE 01/06/2010: Time's up folks! All the images are in (HUNDREDS OF 'EM!).
It's all happening folks. We're launching a Faces in Places book! And best of all, it will raise money for charity. Here's (hopefully) everything you'll need to know about being part of it. If you want to take part, get in touch with me ASAP - we have very little time to put the book together.
How do I get my photos in the book?
Email me at jodysmith [at] gmail.com, with:
1. Attached images you'd like me to consider for the book. These must be as high res as possible - 300dpi is preferable. If they're too big to attach, use something like mediafire or yousendit to deliver the images.
2. Tell me your flickr username / link to your stream and your real name
3. It helps if you can send me links to where you are hosting these images on flickr - but if you're not hosting them on flickr, don't worry.
If you have any questions, just email me first (or send a flickrmail, but I prefer email). I've no idea how many emails I may receive, so bear with me if it takes a while for me to get back to you. I will try and get back to everyone and if your photo is chosen for inclusion you will definitely hear from me.
This is REALLY important
Only send me photos that you have taken yourself and you have full rights to use. It is against the law to take other people's photos and claim them as your own. You will also be asked to sign a simple permissions document to confirm that you took the photo and that you are granting us the right to use it.
What about my rights?
If your photo is selected, I'll send you a release form that will explain your rights in more detail. In summary, signing the form will grant a non-exclusive license for the use of your photo/s - meaning we'll use your photo for the book and to help publicise the book, but you will retain ownership of your photos to do whatever you want with them.
How will you select photos for the book?
Technical quality - so camera phone images are unlikely to make the cut. But the main thing is humour and originality. I'm not entirely sure how I will organise the book yet - it will have chapters though. First, I want to get a great selection of images and then I'll probably consult the community (you guys) for ideas of how to order them.
What do I get for submitting my photos?
GLORY! Everyone who has a photo included will receive a credit in the book and will also be posted a copy. Best of all, you'll have that warm glow of knowing that in being part of the book, you're raising money for charity.
We're raising money for charity? Awesome!
10% of the retail price of every book will go to Hope For Children. The charity's helps disabled, orphaned, poor and exploited children, particularly those in developing countries. This is achieved through providing, promoting and advancing children’s rights to basic necessities, including education and health care, aimed at sustaining their long term development. More info about Hope For Children here.
What are the deadlines?
We don't have a lot of time to pull this one off, guys. I'm hoping to get a small selection of photos ready for a book fair in mid-April , with the final deadline being May. Eek!
How many photos will be in the book?
To be decided, but probably about 200.
Is this a proper book that'll be in shops and stuff?
Absolutely. The publishers are experts in photo books and it will be coming to a shop near you, this Christmas.
I've got an awesome idea for the book, will you listen to me?
Of course! This book is a celebration of all the work the Faces in Places community puts into their photos. So if you have an idea, email me or post a comment for discussion and if we use it (and it's something I haven't thought of before), you'll be credited in the book.
There's only one OFFICIAL Faces in Places book
I'm Jody, I've run Faces in Places from the start and I'm the ONLY person who will contact you about this book. I'll do this via flickr (Pickup_Stix is my username) , or via my jodysmith gmail account. Please be aware that there may be others companies attempting to gain usage of your photos for their own publications - these are NOT connected to this project, so please be careful what you agree to.
I've always tried to be open and honest and I only run Faces in Places for a laugh. I'm doing this book to raise some money for charity and to thank all the people who send photos in. I'm not doing it to make a quick buck. If I was, I'd be doing a pretty poor job, having spent so much time running an ad-free, high traffic website for more than three years!
That's it for now. I'll keep you posted with any other info. Please remember that if you want to take part, you need to do so ASAP. The sooner you get in touch, the higher the chance your photo will be included. So send those photos now.
If you have any questions, please drop me an email or post a comment and I'll get back to you.
Thanks
Jody
