07 Feb 10 - Photos posted here should be about the foliage of plants in an important way but flowers, critters and other stuff can also be in the photo. People seem to enjoy getting feedback on their photos so please leave comments when you're inspired to do so. But keep posting the good ones!

We've had our first CONTEST! The theme was 2-colored foliage and it was won by jayjayc. So we are indebted to her for the beautiful purple and black foliage we're now enjoying as our group photo.

About Fabulous Foliage

I couldn't find a group for posting photos of my favorite leaves and foliage so here is a start. I'm certainly not the first to pay homage to foliage but we did need a place here on flickr to do so. If you've been so enchanted by flowers that the foliage has escaped you, try tuning into leaves. With your photographer's eye you will discover many wonders .. and I'd love to see them here!

Apart from hardscape, the sky and sometimes water, foliage makes up the greater part of what we see in a garden. Foliage outlasts flowers and is just as varied in shape and color. It not only comes in a surprising assortment of other colors but in more shades of green than the English language can adequately convey. Throw in variegation and some individual leaves begin to rival flowers for our attention. The enormous variation in leaf shape is responsible for so much of the texture we see in gardens. Individually, leaves are probably not quite as three dimensionally complex as flowers but many are quite sculptural, either individually or in the manner they are arrayed on the plant. In short, foliage rocks.
