sabor.tijuana says:

I left because TA became a sweaty moshpit of a website. I can remember the good ol' days before it was all boob shots and when it was free.. I eventually got frustrated with it and left for flickr. I finally deleted my TA account altogether.

Why did you leave TA?

Ross LaRocco  Pro User  says:

I left because of the new pricing. I've had Flickr for about a year and never used it until now. 50 dollars for a 2 year Flickr pro account is very reasonable.

Since using Flickr, I wanna slap myself for ever putting up with TA's slow website.

I technically haven't left yet. But after being subscribed to the Google Group for updates, and reading the VERY BAD customer service responses to very supportive customers, TA gave me a bad taste in my mouth and I stopped posting. Not only that, but they treated my friend Photog badly, and that makes the Theatrdiva angry!!!!!

Oh and the BS about changing to a paid system, and I have NEVER gotten information about that from TA directly. They have a email comment system and a telegram system and they don't have the courtesy to contact me?!? BS!!!!

- End of soapbox -

I left - I guess I'm in the process of leaving, since I'll be deleted soon with all of the other free accounts - because as great as it was, they didn't have a place for me and a lot of other people any more at Planet TA. It is fun seeing so many others again from a few year's ago when I first started moblogging.

I think it's about community. Intersecting each other's lives, and seeing what life looks like around the world. Having some fun. And all of that without the drama.

It's good to be here with all of you!

I left because of all the bullcrap. I understand it takes money to run TA, but to force upgrades on everyone by threatening to delete their mobs is ridiculous. The secretive-ness of it all is sickening, and it makes it really seem like they are an untrustworthy bunch. There has been a big push for upgrades for months now, starting with Cola's "mysterious" disappearance, and the the stuff with Shack and Gilly and Richie... and then Janet's rude and nasty messages. TA cheerleaders make it worse, always posting about "great things to come", but yet no one tells anyone what they are, or when they are coming. What kind of business expects new subscribers to lay down $99 without giving them a hint of what services they will be offering? They are becoming corporate whores with their constant marketing drives (Crazy Call, anyone? or how about the Veronicas?) Flickr may be backed by yahoo, but at least it is on very stabile ground, I trust them with my credit card info, and I know they won't be folding anytime soon.

Well, I'm in the same boat as laserone. I (actually by mistake, thinking I was paying another blog account) paid up for the year at the old price. So I will have the account until 3/07 and I use it to post random pics from my cell phone, ones I don't mind losing. But most who knew me on TA found my Flickr account, so I have been using it ever since. I know I will not be renewing when the time comes. There are some cool people who are still there, such as Joe, but mostly everyone who I communicated with is here. So here I shall stay. I guess I am a future exTAer.

Vidiot  Pro User  says:

Why did I leave? Actually, TA left me.

I liked 'em at first, and uploaded tons of camphone shots, starting in I think 2002 or 2003. My photoblog was a TA Editor's Pick three or four times.

But things seemed a little squirrelly -- the third time my site was an Editor's Pick, I mentioned it on my regular blog and said, self-deprecatingly, that "TextAmerica must not have too many members if they're choosing me a third time."

Within an hour or two, I got a freaked-out-sounding e-mail saying that the higher-ups at TA were upset about what I'd written on my blog, and I ended up explaining my tone and editing my blog post, so as not to cause offense...but it seemed strange that they couldn't deal with something some random schmoe wrote on his low-traffic Typepad site. Thin-skinned much?

Anyway, that whole thing blew over, and I kept using TA, and liking them.

When I discovered Flickr in 2004, I started posting here, and still uploaded phonecam shots to my TA site. Eventually, I got a digital camera that I could carry with me, and my phonecam shots dried up.

One day, I made an image with my Flickr photostream's URL, took a picture of it, and uploaded it to TA, intending to "park" my TA site and archive my old camphone shots there. Nothing derogatory toward TA, just something along the lines of "My new pictures can now be found at this address."

Within hours, my entire TA site was gone -- deleted, along with all of my old camphone shots that I'll never get back. Some of which I would have wanted to hang on to -- New York blackout shots, celebrity sightings, pictures of my girlfriend, and other shots I wanted to keep for sentimental reasons. No e-mail from TA, no warnings, nothing.

I actually thought about suing TA, as I'm pretty sure their TOS doesn't include permanent deletion of one's site for merely mentioning Flickr. But I decided it wasn't worth the hassle or the money. I've never been shy about telling this story, though; TA screwed me -- a loyal customer who'd talked up their site quite a bit -- for no good reason.

Early in the days of flickr, this was our standard mode of operation. At the mention of another service, we would remove the moblog. When I say "we" I mean that this was what I was directed to do. When we introduced our profile pages last year, all of this changed and suddenly, we wanted people to list their sites on other services.

I always (since early 2003) thought it was good that we compliment or augment other services. Only recently was that attitude adopted by others although I don't know what the current mindset is at TA and am glad of that.

Wow Vidiot I am surprised I still have my blogs after your story!

I rant and rave about Flickr being a much better alternative to the 100$ TA. Not deleted yet, but after this post who knows? LOL

Now my reasons for not upgrading they are simple.

Tell me what is going to be so great about the new TA? No list of new features, no infomation, no nothing (you think I would be used to this).
I am an engineer by trade (television). I dont take anything on faith, I want documentation and demo's, not lip service. And speaking of communication there is NONE on that site. No tech forum, no user forum, shit I cant find anyway to contact tech support so I make outragous posts that get their attention. Its kinda sad that ppl are finding out about the changes thru a USERS blog.

There is 11 days til they delete the free blogs and I have yet to see an email. Do they think ppl are really going to upgrade AFTER they delete their blog. I think not...

I bet Flickr/Yahoo is just loving this group :)

I rushed to upgrade my account the day I read the post on Richie's site; to insure I got the $69 rate. But then after I did it everyone started leaving. I have posted 10 pics in the past 4 days and have had 2 comments on them. 5 of my 20 friends are gone with a bunch more leaving at the end of the month. 20 users on the most comments list are gone. 20 out of a 105 with who knows how many with free accouts who will be gone at the end of the month. I love what TA is and what it is. But it is nothing without it's users. I have no idea what the future will bring. I paid for it so I guess I will get to see. But as stated above, it is no where near the fun it used to be.

Ahh, the sweet smell of freedom.
The stench of rotting garbage, the smog over Los Angeles, the bums of New York City - all of these are looked upon as a pleasant smell compared to the festering malodorous fragrance that surrounds Keystone and the "new" TA.

I left because of... all the reason you have already written mixed together :)
Lack of professionalism, prices, censorship... what I'm "worried" about now is the non future of TA. In a comment here fixit.textamerica.com/?r=4971130 Cola says they made the $99.00 fee to collect some money to run the servers, because every blog with more than 1000 pictures costs $3000.00 a year. Now how 99$ cover a 3000$ cost? Considering that ads are not that caitalized (for long periods banner places were/are empty)...
Their main problem is understanding the internet market.
With the tendency of service providers to offer free services in change of banners/personal data to sell, asking such a high price for being part of an "elite" comunity to me is an insane choice :)

I also got forced out today. I was in the process of deleting my images and account anyway. What TA is doing seems like simply a cash grab. For the service they offer, which is offered much better at a number of other sites including this one, I can't believe they could even keep a straight face while asking for $99 for a new account...A YEAR!

If driving away all of the loyal early users was their goal, i hope they are happy with achieving it. It certainly seems to be the only effect this action has had from this end.

CoffeeGeek  Pro User  says:

Like another in this thread, I didn't leave TA, they left me. I'm quite pissed about it too. I was one of the first 1000 (I think) on the website, and had a coffee theme going on. Shawn's written me a few times I think as well. My moblog was an editors' choice more than a few times.

I fell away from moblogging mainly because I cancelled my unlimited GPRS account with my cell provider, but eight, 10 months ago, started uploading photos again. I had about 1000+ photos on the site, many of them ones I no longer have locally.

One day a few months ago, I went to upload some more photos, and poof, the moblog was gone. Gone. Email sent to TA went unanswered.

There were a lot of special moment photos there. A lot of coffee related photos that seemed popular (latte art pours, you name it). A lot of friends and family photos. Some of my Mom during her illness (she passed away two years ago). All gone. All without explanation.

Quite upset about it.

Whom I met at one of Robs M&G's he made some noise for me but the powers that be never followed through and i realized that they were going to hold yer images hostage and sell them back to you via CD's Calendars , posters and so on. that coupled with the annoying moderators that would reach out to you and comment needlessly in the hope you would post and comment more , being invited into a "mafia" click of dorks that I never cared about and then being kicked out when I called them for being dorks . oh yeah and the weird foot freaks on the comments page.

Whoa! (My reasons for leaving are minuscule compared to a lot of these stories)

Not that I had much time to be a power user of TA, but I figured I'd leave anyhow because it was getting pretty lame in my opinion. I was noticing some real displeasure from the masses of "regulars" going on about how things were being handled with users and such. I met some cool people on TA, Art being the standout contact and friend who directed me over to Flickr, which I'm happy to correspond over here. I deleted the pics on my TA account and never looked back.

It saddens me to hear that so many people had bad business relations with TA! but I feel happy that I can continue to browse so many interesting, funny and wonderful images created by exTA peeps over here now.

Cheers from Crimmy!

I left because I was tired of the harassment from certain people..TA wasn't doing anything about it. I met so many wonderful people on TA and when the whole TA mafia BS started up it really started going downhill...people starting direspecting one another and it was like being in a room full of babies..

The powers that be could care less what you went through...it started out as a great place to meet people from around the world to a total nightmare for me.

I have been a member of Flickr for a few years but am just now getting more involved...due to personal family issues I really did not have time to be online as I was in the past...
