Error message in SPI-V viewer

Patrick Hoff [deleted] says:

Hi, can somebody help me on this?
When I load my latest equir. images in Field of View viewer, I get a message: "This photo is currently unavailable"
Anybody know what it means? It has only happened with my last 5 pics or so. In the standalone version they work fine.
Thanks!

I am looking in to it...

It's not actually an error message generated by SPi-V, but it is Flickr saying it can't find the image SPi-V requests. See the Flickr logo in the lower right corner.

Here's the (somewhat heated) debate:
flickr.com/forums/bugs/34297

This breaks SPi-V for Flickr for newly uploaded panoramas. It is fixable, by totally rewriting the SPi-V for Flickr scripts to use the API. Fortunately I had already been working on that, but I am rather swamped with work at the moment.

Hopefully I can spend some time on this next week.

Thanks for looking into this Aldo. Any updates on the progress? Rewriting the script to use the API sounds like it could be a big job.

Is there a substitute we could use in the meantime (like linking directly to SPi-V.dcr on your site)?

Progress is slow, because I am also doing some other 'big jobs' at the same time. Read more on my blog, or go right ahead to the demo (with directional audio).

Is there anything like a youtube for sound?

Nice panorama though (shame about the visible nadir patch).

Yeah, shame about the nadir. If I hadn't shot bracketed exposures, I would have taken the time to shoot a hand-held nadir.

Things should be back to normal.

I have rewritten the SPi-V for Flickr script to work with the API, instead of XSL transforming RSS feeds like it used to do. Please let me know if you find a link that used to work, but no longer does. Rewrites tend to cause new teething problems.

Cool new feature: SPi-V for Flickr now supports sets too:

@Simon. I just checked your photo. I think that your link may be wrong. It looks like this:
.../flickr/?page=photos//simons/417119374

It should look like this:
../flickr/?page=photos/simons/417119374

Also, don't forget to post it in the equirectangular pool. :-)

There still is an issue with your photo; the menu does not get populated. I'll look in to that.

@all: please check the 'show more' menu. There should be up to 15 more photos.

Yes thanks Aldo I changed the url and now all seems fine.

My 'Show more' menu is only showing one thumbnail.

I do still have this 'missing plugin' message with Firefox on Intel MacBook but Safari is ok and Firefox is ok with Power PC but I guess this is not your problem though.
Very many thanks for all your work and for making this facility possible.

A new feature to keep you happy:
...?page=/photos/aldo/384479054/in/pool-equirectangular/
The new SPi-V for Flickr picks up on the /in/pool-[poolname] or /in/set-[set id] contexts specified in the image page url.

Well I certainly prefer to show only my images in the "show more", so my cheeky comment should have been "I'll take advantage of the improvements in Spi-V".

Do you have any idea how we can use the advance functionalities of Spi-V in Flickr (for example, HDR panoramas with two exposures, maps, hotspots, etc.)?

Aldo is a group administrator Aldo  Pro User  says:

It would be great if I could use sets for some of these functionalities (tours, adr panoramas), but you can not currently tag sets. I am working on hotspots though...

But isn't it showing too much ? Some of those thumbnails are not equirectangular. For example www.flickr.com/photos/simons/417108322/ is there and it's a polar projection.
What they all have in common is that they are in my "パノラマ panoramas & projections" set and they are also my most recent pictures.
I'm very sorry my stuff is being such a nuisance for you.

An idea: could you use tags to give information to the Spi-V engine? say, machine-tags spiv:xxx, that could give clues on the location of hot-spots, links,...

spiv:1:x1:0:y1:0:x2:10:y2:10
spiv:1:FirstHotspot

hangglide is a group administrator hangglide says:

@Simon: You can specify which photos you would like to see in the "show more" list by adding a list of tags or specifying a set. Like this:

fieldofview.com/flickr/?page=photos/aldo/158599142&ta...
Try it for using tags other than equirectangular. The example comes from Aldo's trip to reboot8.

fieldofview.com/flickr/?page=photos/aldo/sets/72157594199...
SPi-V for Flickr also supports sets. The set id is the same as the (long) number in a normal flickr set url. The example is Aldo's set of infrared panoramas.

If you don't specify then the default is that all photos that are tagged equirectangular are included (is that still correct Aldo?). The photos in the "show more" list that are not equirectangular were probably tagged incorrectly on the photo page.
Posted 63 months ago. (permalink)

view photostream

Aldo is a group administrator Aldo  Pro User  says:

No. If you don't specify tags, you get all photos. If you only want photos tagged with equirectangular, you will have to specify that the way you outlined above.

This is something I changed very early on, for two reasons:
* consistency
* SPi-V supports other projections than equirectangular too (eg cylindrical). So not everybody will be interested in the 'equirectangular' tag.

hangglide is a group administrator hangglide says:

I stand corrected. Thanks for clarifying Aldo. I use it for cylindrical photos too.

Hopefully the final chapter in this debacle:

It is no longer possible to download the 'original' sized photos you upload if you're not a 'pro' user. The SPi-V for Flickr uses the 'large' format instead, which has a maximum horizontal resolution of 1024 pixels. If you want to offer your full resolution equirectangular images through SPi-V for Flickr, you will have to sign up as a 'pro' user of Flickr.

I have added this as a note to the group description.

If I give no tag reference I get all my stream in show more; ie -

If I give tags of panorama or equirectangular show more is unpopulated; ie

For some reason, the API is not supplying an 'original_secret' for that particular photo.

Check it out for yourself, fill in the photo_id here (441516903):
www.flickr.com/services/api/explore/?method=flickr.photos...

When I look at your other photos, I get the 'all sizes' button above them, but not for this one. Did you recently change your default permissions?

I have made it so that as long as I (as in 'Aldo') can download the original, it will work in SPi-V for Flickr. So if you add me as a contact (or even a friend), you can still use some more granular access control on your original images.

Aldo is a group administrator Aldo  Pro User  says:

For non-pro users, the largest image (anybody, includung the user him/herself) can download is 1024 pixels wide.

There's currently a flaw in how SPi-V handles the Flickr API that means that if a user uploads an image that is 1024 pixels wide or less, SPi-V for Flickr can not find that image either. I will fix that bug.

If you're not a pro-user, upload your images at a size larger than 1024x512, and they should work in SPi-V for Flickr, though you will only get a 1024x512 panorama.
