Suggestions for a digital camera to take on deployment to Iraq??

view profile

dwj926 says:

I will be deploying to Iraq in 2 months and I would like to buy a new camera to take with me. I currently have a Canon SD750 (w/o image stab) but I am leaving that here for my wife. I like the camera and would like to keep the same level of picture quality with the new camera.

Something that will resist dust and the occasional fall would be ideal. It still needs to fit in a small pouch that I can carry on my body armor so an SLR is out of the question. I'm not concerned about price since I won't be spending much for a while.

I would like to hear any recommendations from someone who is knowledgeable on the subject. Thanks

hey man. stay safe in iraq. the thing to get might be something like an olympus mju 790 SW (or any in that series), which are supposed to be pretty tough.,

Dennis - my husband takes my Olympus Stylus 725SW out to sea with him (it's part of the same line as pg recommended). They're waterproof (so should be good at keeping sand out too), and impervious to falls. Plus they're tiny, so you can just throw it in a pocket and take it everywhere. :) It has a ton of different shooting modes, plus dig. image stabilization, and it's an all-around great camera. :)

Or a film Leica - they have been in action in most wars since they were invented.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I think I'm gunna go for one of these (I like the idea of "dustproof"). I appreciate the feedback.
