07 Jun 09 - This year the weather was more of an English summer day: cloudy, slight wind and drizzle at times. Neverlethess a good humoured crowd made the best of the booze and food they had brought and proceeded to enjoy the day. As always the bookies ended up the winners!

The Epsom Derby first held 1780 lends its name to all other Derbys throughout the world
EPSOM 2008 (AFP) - Irish raider New Approach who was at one point not going to run in the race won the Epsom Derby here on Saturday to give trainer Jim Bolger and jockey Kevin Manning their first victory in the race.
The top two-year-old of last year - who had been placed in both the English and Irish 2000 Guineas - hit the front about two furlongs from the finish and strode to an impressive victory to give owner Princess Haya of Jordan - who had received the horse as a present from husband and ruler of Dubai Sheikh Mohammed al Maktoum.

The winner was a 5/1 winner and came home ahead of 6/1 shot Tartan Bearer, trained by Sir Michael Stoute and ridden by former champion jockey Ryan Moore, while third was 7/2 favourite and another Irish runner Casual Conquest, ridden by Pat Smullen and trained by Dermot Weld.
