Bare Bottom Zuikos

view profile

sreed2006 says:

In an effort to dispel any fear, uncertainty, and doubt about which Olympus Zuiko lenses can safely be used on Canon EOS cameras, I have taken pictures of my Zuikos with their bottom caps off. They were shot against grid paper in the background so that the dimensions can be somewhat determined. The grid paper has a line every 1/8 inch.

All of these lenses have been used on a Canon 5D with no problems. Most of them have been used on a Canon 5D Mark II. Of the ones that were used on the 5D Mark II there were no problems.

The 24mm F2.8 appears to have the tallest rear element of any of these lenses at about 1/2 inch from the mount surface to the top of the flange. I just now re-verified that this lens works with the 5D Mark II.

These lens portraits were taken with the Olympus Zuiko 90mm F2.0 Macro, so while it didn't get into the group picture, it is known to work on the Canon 5D Mark II.

Thanks for that. Very useful. What a lovely set of lenses.

I love Zuikos. So small and yet so good. I had a whole string of OMs before getting into Contax and Zeiss, and now the Canon 5D, but some of my best photos ever were taken with a Zuiko 50mm f1.8 on an old cheap OM20. The whole camera cost £20...amazing considering the quality.

@shizoo (tropa)

"Zuiko are underestimated compared to zeiss and leica."

As you can see, you are preaching to the choir with me. I bought my original Olympus OM-1 MD and 50/1.4 back in 1979 because I heard that "Olympus is the poor man's Leica." (Or was it "poor man's Nikon?")

I've been very happy with that camera, and still use it from time to time. So, when I found out that Zuiko lenses can be used on the Canon 5D, I was absolutely thrilled. That means any Zuiko lens I buy can be used on both my Olympus and Canon cameras. Film and digital capabilities with one purchase! It's like heaven.

:) exactly.
I've got leica and zeiss too but I'm really happy to take my zuikos. And you're right, on OM (1,2,3 or 4) it just rocks.

Agreed. Zuikos are up there with Zeiss and Leica for sure.

Build quality seems a touch under though. Not that I've ever had a real problem with a Zuiko, but the stop down and remove buttons always seemed a bit rattly to me.

Zeiss and Zuiko are both very precisely made lenses with sharp rendering and neutral bokeh, in my experience. I prefer my Zeiss 50 to my Zuiko 50 for that 3D effect of sharp subject popping out of the soft fog, but many Zuikos are truly awesome too, in my opinion.

@Sicilian0 - sorry. You could start a dozen new topics, so it scrolls off the top, though. I've seen that tactic used on other message boards.

@LightStamp - "Zuikomania!!" - So THAT'S what I've got!!! I was wondering. :-)

the problem with zuiko is the little F2.0 on some of them.

I was looking for the elusive 21mm but it was too far out of my price point and decided to go with the nikor but maybe once things turn around and some cash begins to flow I will start looking again!
F2 isn't that bad, really! The nikor is f 3.5 and it's ok, not too impressed even though it had good reviews.
