15 Nov 09 - Hello Flickr EOL people! We're curious who you are, what you're doing, and what you're thinking. Please use this group to post pictures and videos of yourself, your colleagues, friends, and new people you meet at EOL-related events. Make sure to tag your photos & videos to make it easy for everybody to explore the collection. See below for tag suggestions. These recommendations will probably evolve over time.

Come back often to check out what's new in the EOL community!

About Encyclopedia of Life Community

The Encyclopedia of Life is an unprecedented global partnership between the scientific community and the general public. Our goal is to make freely available to anyone knowledge about all organisms. Many people all over the world are involved in this project, and it's hard to keep track of what everybody's up to. This group will give us an opportunity to get to know each other and to share photos and videos of EOL-related people and events.

Our interpretation of an EOL event is rather broad, covering everything from a formal conference or workshop to a private outing in search of new pictures for the Encyclopedia of Life Images Group or an evening with friends in a bar arguing about the EOL's mission and progress. So post away and show us who you are and what you're doing.

If you are involved in EOL in any way, as a staff member, advisor, volunteer, or content contributor, you're invited to post an image of yourself and use the description to share your thoughts about the EOL project. You can also post pictures of your colleagues, friends, kids, or dogs if you tell us how they are involved in EOL.

We encourage Creative Commons licenses for the images and videos in this group, but they are not required. Of cource, Creative Commons images will have a better chance of making it into EOL press releases and other project-related information materials.

In order to keep things organized and to allow for fun ways of exploring the group pool, please use the following tags whenever possible:

1. "EOL Community" - This will allow people to locate photos in the pool from the main Flickr Advanced Search page.

2. "Name of Event" - If your image is associated with an event, please provide the name of the event, e.g., "BioSynC Species Accounts Workshop" or "Lee Family May Day Fieldtrip". Before naming your event, please check the Group Tags to see whether somebody else may already have coined a name for your event and to avoid duplication of names for non-identical events.

3. "Place of Event" - Geotagging is strongly encouraged for all images associated with events (EOL event maps!), but simple place name tags should be used, too. Please check the Group Tags to see whether somebody else may already have coined a name for the place of your event. It would be great if we could all converge on the same place names. For example, if somebody is already using the "Harvard University" tag, it's best to use that tag, rather than starting a new one like "Harvard" or "Harvard, Cambridge".

4. "Month and Year of Event" - Use the full English name of the month and the four digit year, e.g. "November 2009".

5. If people in your photos are Flickr members, be sure to use the Flickr People in Photos tool to link to their accounts. This will give us fun ways to explore the various connections within the Flickr community.

We encourage all group members to allow other Flickr members to add notes, tags, and people to your photos. This will allow us to all work together on telling the stories depicted in our photos. Also, remember: if your tag has any empty spaces in it, you need to surround it with quotation marks or Flickr will split it at the space; i.e., use "November 2009" to get the November 2009 tag.

See you soon in the EOL Community Group?
