About Encyclopedia of Life Images

Through this group Flickr users can provide images and videos of organisms for the Encyclopedia of Life web site. Please be sure to read the Group Rules before posting.

Ideally, images for EOL should be in focus, high resolution pictures of live organisms in their natural habitat. However, pictures of cultivated plants, captive animals, or dead specimens are ok, especially if the organism is rarely encountered in the wild. However, please be sure to indicate clearly in the image caption if your photograph is of a captive, cultivated, or dead specimen, and always include location information for organisms photographed in the wild.

If you Twitter, you can follow EOL. We're also on facebook.

The Atlas of Living Australia (ALA) is a government-funded project to bring together information about Australian plants, animals and microorganisms. The ALA is working with the Encyclopedia of Life and is encouraging Australian photographers to contribute to this group. Images of Australian species shared under Creative Commons licences are displayed through ALA tools. The ALA attributes each such image to the photographer.

We are proud to announce our Image Contest Winners. Our regular contests feature a broad range of varying entry themes that will allow users to showcase the Best of EOL. To learn more about the contests and see past winners please visit Best of EOL Images.

Images posted in this group will be featured on the EOL web site, as long as they adhere to the following criteria:

The image is set as public

The image is licensed with one of the following licenses:
-Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike Creative Commons (CC-BY-NC-SA)
-Attribution-NonCommercial Creative Commons (CC-BY-NC)
-Attribution Creative Commons (CC-BY)
-Attribution-ShareAlike Creative Commons (CC-BY-SA)

-Images marked with NoDeriv creative commons licenses (CC-BY-ND and CC-BY-NC-ND) or All Rights Reserved are NOT going to be usable by EOL, so there's no point to post them to this group.

The image is tagged using one or more machine tags, including the most specific name for the organism:
- The machine tag for binomial scientific name ("taxonomy:binomial=*") is preferred
- The machine tag for genus name (taxonomy:genus=*) is strongly recommended
- The machine tag for common name (taxonomy:common=*) is also recommended

Be sure to use quotes (avoid word processor smart quotes) around machine tags with spaces in them.

*replace with the name

See the complete list of EOL-friendly machine tags.

If you are concerned about applying the CC licenses to your photos, try one of these strategies:
- Upload only medium resolution versions and keep hi resolution versions for commercial licensing.
- Upload a sample from your collection, with a link in the photo caption to where potential clients can find more.

Encyclopedia of Life's computer program will regularly check this Flickr group for any new or modified images and place them on pages (if the above rules are followed). The image will appear as 'unvetted' as we need to validate that the tag correctly identifies the organism in the photo.

Thanks for posting your photo to the <a href="http://www.flickr.com/groups/encyclopedia_of_life/">Encyclopedia of Life Images Group</a>. Please note that your image cannot currently be imported to the <a href="http://eol.org">Encyclopedia of Life</a> because it does not have the proper creative commons license and taxonomy machine tag. Danke daß du dein Foto zur <a href="http://www.flickr.com/groups/encyclopedia_of_life/">Encyclopedia of Life Images Gruppe</a> hinzugefügt hast. Leider kann dein Foto zur Zeit nicht zur <a href="http://eol.org">Encyclopedia of Life</a> importiert werden, weil es nicht die richtige Lizenz hat und die taxonomischen Machine Tags fehlen. Bitte schau dir die <a href="http://www.flickr.com/groups/encyclopedia_of_life/rules/">Gruppenregeln</a> an, dann <a href="http://www.flickr.com/groups/encyclopedia_of_life/discuss/72157607325951917/">ändere deine Lizenzen</a> und <a href="http://www.flickr.com/groups/encyclopedia_of_life/discuss/72157629880155291/">gib deinen Fotos Tags</a> wenn du sie der EOL zur Verfügung stellen möchtest.
