About We Wax Art (P1/C2)
Welcome to We Wax Art
This group is about sharing our passion for all kinds of Encaustic paintings and Encaustic medium with mixed techniques.
What is Encaustic?
Encaustic is a beeswax based paint that consists of beeswax, resin, and pigment. The word encaustic comes from Greek and means to burn in, which refers to the process of fusing the paint.
Encaustic has a long history, but it is as versatile as any 20th century medium. It can be polished to a high gloss, it can be modeled, sculpted, textured, and combined with collage materials. It cools immediately, so that there is no drying time, yet it can always be reworked.
The durability of encaustic is due to the fact that beeswax is impervious to moisture. Because of this it will not deteriorate, it will not yellow, and it will not darken. Encaustic paintings do not have to be varnished or protected by glass.
Encaustic paint has no toxic fumes, nor does it require the use of solvents. As a result, a number of health hazards are reduced or eliminated.
~Ralph Mayer, The Artist's Handbook
The technique involves coloured waxes which are melted, applied to various surfaces and allowed to cool. The reason encaustic art is such a different way to create works of art is that the waxes can be re-melted as often as you like. You can change your artwork at any time - almost like magic - with just a touch of the iron.
This unusual quality, combined with the brilliance of the colours, inspires a fresh fascination every time it is used. The intermingling colours flow under the heated iron to emerge in intriguing and unplanned ways. The basic effects can be controlled, but the intrinsic forms and colour blends are unique every time.
~ Michael Bossom, The Encaustic Art Project Book
