About Pro Color Emulsions Project [see rules]
A flickr-based project to attempt a visual answer to the perennial question, "Which [professional] film should I try?"
GROUND RULES--READ BEFORE POSTING!!
Unlike most flickr groups, this group is NOT primarily intended to be a showcase of the best shots of individual photographers; it is instead a collaborative educational aid cataloging the subtle (or not) differences between different film emulsions. Let's help create a comprehensive guide for the analog flickrite community and beyond:
1) ONLY 3 IMAGES PER FILM, PER PERSON, EVER. (You can swap images in and out, of course.) That means three NPH shots, three Portra800 shots, etc. Try to choose shots that are representative (in your experience) of a certain emulsion's "look" (you can highlight strengths or weaknesses). It would be great if you would use your 3 images per emulsion to show performance over a range of daylight, shady, nightime, flash, etc. situations.
2) TAG IMAGES USING STANDARDIZED TAGS [see current post]--AND DON'T SUBMIT IMAGES SHOT WITH FILMS THAT AREN'T ON THE LIST. No film you can't buy anymore (I know...I've got some great older stuff on NHG and Supra too...). Also, no "consumer" films like Kodak Gold, Fuji Sensia, etc. It's not an elitist thing; it's just that with these films it's easy enough to run down to the gas station and spend $4 or $5 bucks yourself to see how they perform. (If this bothers you, don't argue--start a companion group!)
3) This sounds obvious, but for the absentminded photographer (like me): please only submit images if you are 100% sure of the film you used. (I just had to doublecheck a few of my slide submissions to get the exact emulsion type correct!)
4) This group is and will remain a public one. However, since its primary goal is to serve as a practical reference guide, the number of photo entries for EACH type of film emulsion (i.e. NPH, Portra400NC, etc) may be capped at somewhere between 100-300 total. This may mean some ruthless weeding to get the most representative sample possible, but I promise that every interested group member will have at least 2 or 3 images in the pool no matter what.
5) AND FINALLY (and most importantly)...this only works if the images you submit have not been strongly tweaked with Photoshop etc.--even if the results look "natural". For the puposes of this group, "strongly tweaked" means ANY change in saturation; more than minimal contrast and/or color correcting; "artistic" filtering or excessive sharpening...you get the idea.. One example: this rule disqualified two of my own Portra400NC shots that had saturation boosted 25%.)
However, if there is something in-camera you did that should be noted (push, pull, polarizing filter, etc.) do note it in the comments or description.
