BRIEF BIOGRAPHY
Described as 'one of England's most original architects of the interesting period about 1900', Edgar Wood was to develop a reputation which went beyond national boundaries.
Wood was a native of Middleton near Manchester UK, and built many houses in the area, as well as the George and Dragon Hotel in Castleton. He was educated at Middleton Grammar School, and after training as an architect, set up practice at Middleton.
He became a founder member of the Northern Art Workers Guild, an important advocate of the Arts and Crafts philosophy in the North West.
Wood developed a freedom of style which encapsulated both traditional and modern forms of construction combined with crafted fixtures and fittings all designed by his own hand.
