Policy makers, cultural heritage specialists, theorists, and artists converged to address the remarkable cultural, educational and societal significance of the new types of audiovisual commons resources that are currently being created on the internet. Sustainable public access and enhanced opportunities for creative reuse of these resources are the event’s particular focus.

De laatste tien jaar hebben we steeds meer en diverse publiek toegankelijke informatie, kennis- en mediabronnen op internet gezien. Zij trekken soms zelfs dagelijks miljoenen gebruikers. Van Wikipedia en Archive.org tot Europeana, de zogenaamde open content bronnen zijn razend populair. Terwijl voorvechters de geboorte van de ‘vrije cultuur’ verkondigen, maken producenten van creatieve werken zich zorgen dat hun marktpositie ernstig wordt aangetast.

Sceptici spreken zich krachtig uit tegen open content, omdat het de bestaande “poortwachterrol” van auteurs en academische en professionele instituties ondermijnt, terwijl het geen eigen betrouwbaar verdienmodel heeft. Deze internationale conferentie onderzoekt de economie van het publieke domein in het tijdperk van het internet en stelt de vraag: hoe gaan we de rekening betalen voor vrije cultuur die optimaal toegankelijk moet blijven?
