About East London Line
The East London Line, which has long run from New Cross and New Cross Gate in South London to Whitechapel (onto Shoreditch in rush hour and Sunday morning), is being extended both north and south.
Pictures of the current line are welcome and of the contruction. Also pictures of the stations and lines that the extensions will use. General pictures of the surrounding areas, however, are out.
As part of the contruction work Shoreditch Station will close permanently on 9th June 2006 and the bridge over Old Street will be partially demolished during Easter 2006.
Pictures of Shoreditch Station are particularly welcome as it would be good to have a record of this rather quirky station before it closes for good.
According to the gov.uk site (see below) the work to extend the line with be done in two phases. The first phase will see the line extended north to Dalston Junction from Shoreditch and southwards from New Cross Gate to West Croydon via the existing overground railway line as well as Crystal Palace. The first phase is due to be complete by June 2010.
The second phase should see a northward extension to Highbury and Islington and a spur line from Surrey Quays across to Clapham Junction via a new station at Surrey Canal Road before joining the existing London Bridge to Victoria line. After Wandsworth Road the extension will continue to Clapham Junction rather than to Victoria.
