My Earth Hour project consists of not watching CBC or reading the Toronto Star for the month of March.
It might also be amusing to duct tape a bunch of laser pointers to the pigeons at Nathan Philips Square on 8:00 pm March 29!

Picnic at the beach would be ideal but I am afraid it will still cold in Toronto. Maybe hangout by the Lakeshore.
Above of all, photography will be a sure thing to do.
Anyone know of any public events in Toronto March 29th??

In Richmond Hill, hundreds of us will be at David Dunlap Observatory for a chance to see the night sky as it may have appeared in 1935 when the telescope saw First Light. There will be small telescopes for stargazing, tours of the administration building and library and a short lecture by Dr. Tom Bolton, discoverer of the first Black Hole.
This will be both a happy and sad occasion, since the University of Toronto is about to sell off the DDO to developers. Thousands of people have been writing letters and signing petitions to stop U of T from selling the largest telescope in Canada, not to mention a green space that is twice the size of U of T's own campus! The 74-inch telescope is not useful for deep-space visual astronomy, but is still actively used for spectroscopy and public outreach. Please sign the Save the DDO Online Petition:

Folks
Some nice ideas.. what ever you choose to do, make sure your not using any more energy than what your lights use.. What would be great is for all the energy companies to actually notice your reduction of electricity..
Its actually not about no light its about the fossil fuel that is being burnt to give you that light
For those in Australia, remember this is generally from Coal
Consider doing more than just turning your lights off.. like the tv, pc, radio and games. Look around your house/flat and turn things off and keep them off for the hour.
Go for a walk and look at the darkness... Please don't drive your car either... if you do you will have achieved very little
good luck

This year, with Earth Hour going global and so many more people signed up in Australia, WWF wants to hear what you are planning to do for the event.
Just email your idea to earthhour@wwf.org.au, and please also let us know if you are willing to take part in media interviews to help promote Earth Hour.
We will feature the five most innovative and creative ideas in the first email newsletter after Earth Hour.
So have fun and don’t forget to send us your ideas.

C02 Does not harm the earth.
Even if it did, the amount of C02 that humans create is like a mustard seed inside a Costco.
You people fall into two categories: predatory fear-mongers and ignorant fools. Which one are you?

First, we do not fear. In contrast, we are courageous b/c we are facing the real problems. Lots of people don't take this seriously b/c they are comfortable with their present life but failed to see further.
Take a step back and be more open to opinions. Do you think our Earth is in better shape than before?? Deforestation, lack of green areas in cities, air pollution, etc.
We know CO2 is part of the ecosystem but its increasing accumulation creates irreversible damaging impacts on the environment.
The attitude of sitting and doing nothing fits more to be an ignorant.
We work to have a better life for us and our children.

Higher C02 levels are produced when the sun warms the ocean, and then the higher C02 concentrations stimulate more plant growth. C02 does not warm the earth, a warmed earth creates C02.
And BTW, there are more trees on earth now than 100 years ago.
Deforestation is rare and of course there's not much grass in big cities. Duh! It's a city! And about smog, cars only contribute a fraction of it. Most is industrial or blew to North America from China.
Don't call me ignorant when you are the one who can't think for yourself or do your own research.
I'll go into more detail about the two groups of environmentalwackos now.
Group one: Predatory fear-mongers who know the truth but lie about it to the weak and easily led.
Group two: Ignorant fools who follow the Predatory fear-mongers blindly and unquestioningly regurgitate their talking points.

Deforestation is rare?? More trees on earth than 100 years ago?? Show me your evidences. I am open to hear it.
Do you have any proof of smog blew from China?? Are you serious?? If yes, show me.
Industrial development in North America is far more developed than the rest of the World. And we are dealing with higher UV radiation each year b/c of the hole in our sky, do you think this was a natural cause??
A city is also a living ground, we all want to live healthy, don't you?? To do that, we need to find balance -better recycling, more green spaces, cleaner air.
And yeah, I encourage everyone to do more research instead of throwing groundless bold statements.

TROPICAL RAINFORESTS.. a global warning
Tropical rainforests..GLOBAL WARNING
Vast amounts of greenhouse gases - carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide - are released into the atmosphere as a result of clearing and burning rainforests. In recent years, deforestation has contributed as much as 30 percent of all anthropogenic emissions of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
Tropical deforestation therefore contributes significantly to global warming both through the release of stored carbon and through the destruction of one of the Earth’s prime ways of absorbing excess atmospheric carbon.
Moreover, by acting as a ‘heat pump’ that redistributes the energy of sunlight from the equator to the temperate regions, tropical rainforests have another vitally important role that has been largely ignored by climatologists.
Tropical rainforests, and particularly those of the Amazon Basin, warm the temperate zones while cooling the tropics, and in the process, regulate the flow of freshwater through the ecosystem, determining local and regional rainfall patterns.
Destroying the tropical rain forests will perturb climate in ways every bit as powerfully as the addition of greenhouse gases.
Whilst the Philippines goverment on one hand plants 500,000 saplings along the green highway, very commendable on its own, it also allows licences to cut down 36,000 hectres of forests. The Sierra Madre is not for sale, even if TFPI HAS AN IFMA, cutting it down is against the Philippines Presidents own moritorium. NO MORE LOGGING, the granting of the ifma is therefore illegal

in india there is a shortage of power.. most of the cities in india have power cuts ranging from 1 hr to 3 hrs a day every summer.. n during most thursdays its 6hrs

Studies have shown lower incidence of mental illness among people who regularly look up. Invite your neighbors to join you outside for an hour every Sunday beginning one hour after sunset. Turn off all your lights and go outside to look at the sky. If you see artificial lights, resolve to invite the person with the switch to turn it off and join you next week. If we all continue, eventually we'll have complete darkness to enjoy the stars.

I will be going to the theatre. The lights will be on inside but I believe the outside lights will be turned off. So there is no conscious effort on my part to turn the lights, TV, and computer off in my flat; they will be off anyway - but this time they will be off at the wall. So I can't be praised as much as I do others on the forum.
However, just to make a contribution, I will be having a private Earth Hour at eight o'clock on the next day. And long-term there's no reason why I shouldn't go to bed earlier. Much healthier for a night-owl like me.

Last year we played Trivial Pursuit by Candlelight (my sister, mum, husband and I) - it was fun! Have uploaded a picture with us with Counters in our eyes...
This year we're cranking it up a notch and are having a "Games by Candlelight Earth Hour Party" - approx 9 people coming. Games on the go are likely to be Pictionary, Rapidoh, Triv. Purs, Cluedo and possibly Twister.
Lights will be off, TV etc switched off at wall.
Also we decided last year that it's a nice gesture, but the long term benefits will come if people carry on the behaviour even when it's not Earth Hour. We now have an "every second Friday night" earth hour (which is usually a few hours) - last month we had a candlelight BBQ and camped in the back yard !

I have very deep rooted convictions that humans do not contribute 100% to climate change through Co2 but rather our other activities which lead to other problems which are more troubling than climate change. Co2 with a human signature will run to its own conclusion, there will still be methane from our landfill and there will still be the most powerfull greenhouse gas around, water vapour and in a hydrogen based future you are actually going to be pumping out an even worse greenhouse gas than Co2, yes water!
And regardless, 10, 50, 100, 200, 1000 years from this very day the climate will still be changing. The climate change movement have to start looking for other things to blame as we move beyond fossil fuel. Also a deep conviction of mine is that you simply cannot reduce or halt climate change and also to make out that the climate should not change is very wrong and flies in the face of reasonable arguments. It seems a waste of time and money to be having the aim of halting climate change.
Rather we should adapt, spend more energy on helping people cope and moving people out of danger, not doing everything we can to keep people in danger!! Think about floods in the UK in 2007 and rather than helping people move out of flood plains, more people are unable to sell their homes and move house, while more houses are being built unable to cope with the flood risk they are put in. So they are carbon neutral, who cares? They are on a flood plain, they should not be there and if they are they should be on stilts, but the movement says as long as they are carbon zero (there is no such thing) that makes it ok. No it doesn't.
We HAVE to get real about this, we have to stop going on about Co2 as if that's the key, it's not, we must adapt and stop moaning about it, we have to stop trying to convert the people who don't believe the hype, they don't beleive the hpye for very good reasons so don't waste money on trying to prove what we already know. Just get on with it, no IPCC is needed, we need local authorities to make sure green taxes get spent on green issues (not a war or a failing bank) and that funds are set up to help people when acts of god occur, before we have no oil left to build stuff with or to help transport people out of danger.
Get real, get off Co2 start doing things that matter!!
BUT the idea of Earth Hour is great and this is how I spent it:

Right I'm gonna listen to my ipod in the dark, Sigur Ros I think.

@danielpan: nothing is irreversible apart from death because life finds a way, life adapts, life which does not adapt dies, so we had better start adapting!! No human civilization is immune, but we have a unique ability to survive and evolve and get through this rough period of time, which in all honesty could be a fabrication of people who have not experienced this kind of thing before?
Co2 has been classed as a pollutant just so it can be tackled, that is laws have had to be changed to make a native gas of the atmosphere appear to be something which should not be there.
That is the only justification for a ficus on the third most important greenhouse gas. I remind you of the "baddies":
1 Water Vapor
2 Methane
3 Co2
Now going forward into the future, we might have to denote water as a pollutant when we are emitting more and more water vapor into the air.
There is no escaping this Co2 isn't even half as bad as it's made out to be and to make matters worse for the global wailing movement, human Co2 is around 10% of the total amount of Co2 in the atmosphere. Just to put the final nail in the coffin of the climate change alarmists, when Co2 was in excess of 1,000ppm the climate was an awful lot colder than it is today.
No, you see Co2 had to be classed by law as a pollutant to make this whole thing work.
And one final thought, what are you going to do about the Co2 emissions of volcanoes which are proven to have decade based impacts on the climate?
Oh perhaps one last thought, AGW (or Anthropogenic Global Warming) is only a theroy, and it's not the only theory, but quite often you'll hear "the debate is over", "time for action", but the scientists are still trying to figure it all out, meanwhile the environmental nutters could be making things a whole lot worse, with biofuels and the like.
Seriously what if we did simply do nothing about Co2, how do you think it would turn out?

We sat in the living room and talked, explaining to the boys the cost of electricity, gas and auto gas for our family each month, a shocker I think for them....and my 12 yr old loved the undivided attention he was getting for 83 minutes (we went over the hour)
We also realized how many things we had plugged that we didn't need plugged in when we went around in prep for the hour....
we love to camp so we often sit outside our trailer (did the tent thing we have disabilities so need small trailer) and just enjoy the darkness, sometimes a campfire, but truly enjoying the stars and the things we miss with the humm of machinery and the noise of the refrigerator generator and the vehicles on the road....this wasn't quite that extent but it was a refreshing break none the less...and I'm proud to say that everyone of our neighbors seemed to participate as well....my chatterbox son has decided that we should do it on the 29th of every month and we've agreed. I used to try and make the whole family have electronic free Sundays, to much dismay, but now it's cool so we are sooo on the band wagon...as for taking pictures, I thought that too but i use rechargeable batteries and felt it was an important moment to capture for the boys....and they were uploaded on a battery run laptop....hey we all have to take baby steps....

I WONT be switching my lights off this year!!
That`s because my electricity is NOW from a renewable source... I stopped smoking ...I stopped drinking.... I saved my money and purchased 200Watt of Solar panels... Most things in the house run off them including this laptop.... THere is an incentive for you!! To stop smoking!! Some people spend at least 4000 pounds on fags a year...That could fund towards a car or a decent holiday!!! Every year now i`ll buy more solar panels!!! :-)
