About Early Photography in Romania

This group is devoted to antique photographs taken in Romania and its predecessor states, the principalities of Wallachia and Moldavia, from the moment when photography reached their territories (debatable date) and up to the end of World War I and the turbulent years that immediately folowed it (1918-20). Photography in Interbellum Romania takes up the history of Romanian photography from that point onward.

NB: This group excludes photographs of the Romanians outside the borders described above from the 1840s up to 1918/20. This largely leaves out Transylvania, Banat, Bukovina and Bessarabia. The photos of Romanians from the Austro-Hungarian territories will be welcome in the Early Photography in Austria-Hungary group.

Some general rules

1. This group hosts only scans of original photographs, made and posted by (or with the consent of) their owners. No book scans or unauthorised copies are permitted.

2. It is strictly forbidden to distribute or use the items added by members without their explicit consent, when the items are licensed under full copyright (All rights reserved).

3. English will be maintained as the main language of this group, in order to facilitate discussions with early photography enthusiasts all around the world.

4. Xenophobic or racist content will not be tolerated on this group. Comments regarding the radical ideologies of the 19th and 20th centuries are expected to be made only from a historical and detached point of view. Failure to observe this rule will result in immediate banning.

A note regarding WWI items: all photos taken by German, Austro-Hungarian, Bulgarian or Turkish amateur or professional photographers in the Romanian territories occupied by the Central Powers should be posted in the correponding early photography groups and not here, as they reflect the occupier`s perspective and photographic tradition. Vice versa, photos taken by Romanian or Romania-based photographers abroad are fully adequate to this group.

Acest grup este consacrat fotografiilor de epocă făcute în România și în statele care au precedat-o, principatele Valahiei și Moldovei, de la momentul în care fotografia și-a făcut pentru prima dată apariția în zonă (dată încă discutabilă) și până la sfârșitul Primului Război Mondial și cei câțiva ani turbulenți care l-au urmat (1918-20). Dincolo de această limită, grupul Photography in Interbellum Romania preia firul cronologic al fotografiei românești.

NB: Acest grup exclude fotografiile românilor aflați în perioada anilor 1840-1918/20 în afara granițelor descrise mai sus - în termeni largi Transilvania, Banatul, Bucovina și Basarabia. Fotografiile românilor din teritoriile austro-ungare sunt însă binevenite în grupul Early Photography in Austria-Hungary.

O notă privind materialele din Primul Război Mondial: toate fotografiile făcute de amatori sau profesioniști germani, austro-ungari, bulgari sau turci în teritoriile românești ocupate de Puterile Centrale sunt de adăugat în grupurile de fotografie veche corespunzătoare, deoarece reflectă perspectiva și tradiția fotografică a acestora. Viceversa, fotografiile făcute în afara granițelor României de fotografi români sau stabiliți în România își au pe deplin locul în acest grup.
